Protection?

Okay, this might be the wrong thread to post this question....

I don't understand this consern for protection. If I understand it, you can download a song, burn it to a CD. Once it's burned to a CD, what's stopping you from re-reripping from the CD?

Re-rip it to MP3 and you have already gone around the protection. Yes I know you lose some quality, but is it really noticable?

Just my thoughts.... I think the iTunes music store is cool. I haven't bought any thing yet, but as soon as I see a song I want I will. :D

I've noticed a few reviews that seem to question AAC's superior quality over MP3 and I wonder how many of them compared an AAC file to a consumer cd master? How many had access to the master recording?

Not all masters are recorded the same. Some of them are outright dirty (some of us like that) and isn't necessarily a reflection on the codec for AAC.

If the original master is dirty, you're going to get a dirty encoding, unless someone tries to enhance the audio again (post-mastering).

I may have completely misunderstood you, but if I do understand, first of all, there's no reason that Sony, Warner, or anyone else would pull out on the Windows version, and second of all, the music is stored on a server, not some freaky-deaky (for lack of a better word) computer that keeps you from downloading to Windows. . .Like I said, I could have misunderstood you.

Well, you did misunderstand me.

This thread started with an article that stated that certain labels were reluctant to allow iTMS to go to Windows yet. Someone here suggested that Apple should release the Windows version without those labels. My point was that in order to do this Apple would need to set up their system to be able to distinguish between Mac and Windows versions of iTunes, and not let Windows download certain songs (songs from certain labels). Personally, I think that this would be a huge level of extra effort, and I don't see Apple really wanting to do this.

I don't see why it would be such an effort, please enlighten me. ;)

Maybe its in apple's interest to have this arrangement. Not only could you only download some tunes on a mac but you could get special deals too. Its no different from companies offering deals on their products to customers of their other products. :D
