How does this work for artists?

So... I'm an artist who has music up on the iTunes store.

From what I can see, if someone signs up for this service, and has one of my albums ripped and bittorrented, he gets to replace the crappy rip with fresh, clean iTMS originals, for free, and I don't get paid? And... somehow, the new version is apparently considered legally owned now?

That doesn't seem quite fair to me.

People aren't being straightforward (if they're responsible), because this falls under Apple's non-disclosure agreement.

Patience is a virtue.

Match faster, match faster.... :(

OH, i see what you did there ;)

i only have 3,000 songs and it won't match FAST ENOUGH!!!

Well, Apple penned new licensing deals with the major labels for this very reason. How that money is spread to artists is to be seen. My hunch is we'll ne'er see a penny. The compromise would be for ASCAP & BMI reporting, yet this is probably doubtful.

not sure on the specifics, but I'm pretty sure apple had to sign license with the labels for this and they are getting a cut of the membership fee. Wouldn't surprise me if the artists doesn't see a dime of it. On the other side, those people that bittorrented your music were not going to buy it anyway, and it's not like this new file is much different. Sadly there is no way to differentiate who legally ripped their copy and who just pirated it. I wonder how hard it will be for someone to create a iTunes Match spoof program?

People are not being straightforward, it streams, yet you keep music on your device too? i am so lost.

It is both, you can either stream or download locally.

Whats obvious? There is no streaming as far as I concluded. Also, there is no mention of streaming. Can you please direct me to where apple said you can stream from iCloud?

How about the fact that I am streaming right now? Is that enough proof?

Interesting. Today, after this Lion install, & while juggling these huge media folders from device to device til the right stuff fits & is in a usable place, my external decided to start hammering, OS X gazzed, and I lost my entire 42GB iTunes music library.

Luckily, I still have most of it on my iPad.

I wonder if that fact, plus this service, will allow me to restore my music back to my Mac.

...or combining music match with the "iPhone to mac" service through iPhone Explorer...

...ever notice you only ever lose a HD during moves where the content on it isn't backed up?

It isn't fair. I can't say with complete honesty that all of my music is legitimate, but I wouldn't take from independent artists such as yourself. I think anyone not in this new licensing agreement should be reimbursed, so I agree.

I fail to see what warranted people voting down your post.

Thats proof enough for me crisss. Very interesting and very happy. I hope streaming makes it to the final release.

The deal is inked with the recording labels. I guess if artists want some additional compensation, they should bring it up with their respective labels. Apple is just a reseller. You don't see artists asking Bestbuy or Walmart for payments, do you?

How do I delete the crap in my library that it is showing on the cloud that I previously purchased...

I deleted it for a reason

Anyone else getting a 4010 error while "Waiting for Apple to deliver your iTunes Match Results"? I'm sure their servers are getting hammered.

Edit: Just got through!

Supposedly, the big record labels are getting paid something by Apple for the right to offer the iTunes Match service. ("Supposedly" because little to nothing has been made public. Contrast that to the nasty reactions record labels gave to the Amazon Cloud announcement.)

So you're going to have to ask your record label for clarification as to what this means for you. (Unless you don't have a record label, which means, um, you're going to have to find out for yourself. Isn't there some sort of legalese you have to agree to when you sell your songs on iTunes? I imagine iTunes Match is mentioned there.)

If the situation truly bothers you I guess you can always bail out of the iTunes Store.

EDIT: I suppose if iTunes Match is perceived as shafting over indies then maybe some grassroots protesting is in order to get better terms.

You and me both man...I am SO happy its appearing in the beta, cannot see why it wouldn't make it to the final release since this is something nobody was 100% sure would be added. I would prefer 3G or WIFI streaming but if they do WIFI only, I will GLADLY take it. Now Movies/TV Shows...come on apple, get those in the cloud!

My other concern is metadata, I have a real particular way of how I like to have songs listed, so I am really hoping that can transfer to the cloud. Also with me making it "non" standard metadata will iTunes match even work (assuming that song/album is in iTunes). What about iTunes bought songs that I changed the metadata how will they appear in the cloud? Man I gotta stop, so many damn metadata questions...

Your Handle FTW!

Hope you find a way cause this is a problem I will have as well.

Also not happy with purchased songs showing up with the iTunes metadata that had 20x artists listings for 1 baby einstein album so the list under purchased is a complete mess and hard to find anything I need.

*not talking about iTunes match as I am not a developer, just what crippled version of the purchased songs we have access to now.

Well.. iTunes match was going pretty slow with my 3,000 song library so I created a secondary library of 100 mainstream songs to test. I reran Match on that library, it finished in a few minutes but had to upload the entire thing.
The songs were all ripped from cd's. Most likely there are kinks to be worked out but if it turns out you have to upload anything not purchased from the iTunes store, that iCloud will turn into a raincloud.

Yah its quite frustrating

Nobody seems to answer my question above. Do you own the tracks that are matched by the service for good? Meaning that once you get everything matched and then stop the subscription, do you still own all the matched tracks?

My expectation would be yes, given that Steve said iTunes Match subscribers will be downloading DRM free tracks. If a time bomb were built in, that in itself is DRM.

That's what I think so too. If that's the case, then some people can get by just paying $25 as a one time fee to match their library, and let iCloud does the rest for free. I guess one can think of the $25 as a one time fee to "legalize" your library.

I'm an iOS developer but i didn't see this email.

Mac OS X devs only?

I may develop for two separate organic platforms, and I'm guessing this is for U.S. developers only, us in Canuckistan will likely have to wait.
