It didn't work via HomeSharing for me despite it having worked that way previously. I had to add my iPhone as a remote in Music on my Mac by entering the 4 digit code on my phone.

I read that on another forum, but I am also unable to manually add the remote. When I click connect manually the 4 digit code appears but the icon for the remote does not appear on Music. I also tried for Apple TV app and the remote icon doesn't appear on it either.

Hmm. Sorry not sure how to address this. The little remote icon appeared in Music. I just checked TV and the remote icon does not appear however. In TV it says there's one remote connected but it gives no other info except the option to forget all remotes. In the Remote app the TV show and Movie sections are empty. Hmm.

Cheers, I will keep trying... So much for "It just works" its been a while since apple products just worked :(

Up and working now...

Didnt realise there was also a Calatina update also (10.15.2), when I updated it too everything worked via Home Share

...
Following today's iOS update and the macOS 10.15.2 update, the iTunes Remote app can be used to control playback in the Music and TV apps in macOS Catalina.
...

Was there another update on Friday or did you mean this week's update? (The ones that arrived Dec 10?) I don't see any updates...

No mention of podcasts. It can control these too right?

Just tested this. No.

Remote.app can still control podcasts in iTunes on Mojave, but not at all in Catalina.

I guess it is because Music and 🍏TV seem to be made from iTunes whereas Podcasts is a catalyst app. So will Podcasts ever get this feature? Will I ever move to Catalina? (this MBP went back to Apple today).

Gave this a try today...

Launch the old remote app with the blue icon, not the new one with the grey apple TV remote icon.

On the Libraries->Settings screen tap Add a media library.

Now you can either add the remote in the Music app or the TV app but not both or you end up with none!

In the Music app on Catalina a new group in the side bar will appear titled "Devices" and your phone should appear in it, click that and then enter the pairing code.

In the TV app on Catalina first you need to switch to the Library in the window's separator bar. Same procedure as before, a "Devices" group should appear with your phone in it when the remote app is showing the pairing code. In my experience the phone did not appear, so I quite TV and relaunched and then it did appear.

When I tried adding it in TV after Music what actually happened was it said the pair code was invalid and then the library was removed from the remote app.

Van Halen - 1984

what a band and what an album!!!!
1984 — what a year for heavy metal album releases in general!

Metallica's "Ride the Lightning"; Maiden's "Powerslave"; Dio's "The Last in Line"; Queensryche's "The Warning"; the debut albums by W.A.S.P. and Metal Church. Plus so many more.

Oh, and the soundtrack to the documentary about the loudest rock band of all, Spinal Tap!

Back on topic: I forgot all about the iTunes Remote app. I'm gonna have to try it out again with my Apple Music account.

Sounds like Apple didn’t think this through or have a plan for how the remote app would continue to control media playback on a Mac. You can control music or tv, but never podcasts.

So, I have no problem to connect with the 4 digit code. However, if I restart my iMac, I need a new code ... It's a bit annoying, but at least it works.

But has anybody got it to work with Home Sharing?

Use it all the time, and was a major reason I didn't upgrade the media server. It's the only way to play local content across multiple speakers without getting on the computer itself.

Yup. I’ve been trying to figure this out.

Van Halen’s MCMLXXXIV is my favorite album of all time.
Yep, for me its up there with Led Zepplin IV, Blood on the Tracks, Dark Side of The Moon, Rumours, Nevermind, Appetite For Destruction, Back In Black, Paranoid, Electric Ladyland etc, etc, etc......
