Update: Apple have now fixed the problem for me, and credited me with 5 free songs for the inconvenience.

I believe they're having to fix this customer by customer, so if anyone's still suffering this worth persevering with the emails.

So kudos to Apple for fixing the issue and making good :), but I remain disappointed in their early approach to the issue.
