On a related note: how goes the Apple v. Apple lawsuit? The one that says Apple can't produce any media/music/whatever? Has that been settled. I'd certainly want it settled before creating an entire business based on something that could be taken away by the courts at anytime.

More on topic: Just so I'm clear, iPods can't actually display video, like in video podcasts, right? We'd have to watch them on iTunes, right?

Meanwhile, the first Video Podcasts appear to be making their appearance. It's long been known that Apple's interface/intrastructure would allow for distribution of video podcasts, but the first actual Video podcasts are now becoming available. Choices are rather limited at the moment, but Video appears to be a direction that Apple is actively pursuing.

What do you mean the "FIRST" video podcasts appear to be making their appearance? We've been doing video podcasts ever since iTunes started podcasting? What?!? Don't the indie video podcasts count?!?

Videoblogging

The word "vodcast" is already in use for video on demand broadcasts, but happens to rhyme with "podcast" as well. Apple could choose to rely on that term instead of inventing yet another one. I don't mind either way, as long as I know what they are selling or giving away.

Actually there are lots of people delievering video over the internet like this. We've been calling it videoblogging. I run a site that is a step-by-step how to called FreeVlog . Also there are other programs and sites out there for subscribing to and watching videoblogs. Check out FireANT and Mefeedia.

doesnt a video podcast defeate the "pod" in podcast?!!?! im downloading one right now, to watch on my PB .. . . shouldnt it be a computercast? hmmm id love a video iPod. dont know where i would get the money for one, but id still buy one!!!!

I hate to beat a dead horse (see previous discussions for animated gif) but I'm really about ready to create a Mac app that will ignore any news or rumors regarding Apple AND this insanity that is the iPod/iTunes hype/circus.

I remember reading how all these iPod sales would be good for Apple so they could pump more R and D into the computer division. I don't see it.

Come on, Apple COMPUTER!! Let's get with the program.

Nice one! And nice avatar - decided on a change from Marilyn?

Thanks. No real reason for Apple to change the iTMS acronym, just what the M stands for.

I changed to the Garnertar when I dropped the beanie. I didn't have my PB ('tar files) handy, so fell back to this. For some reason, I'm not highly motivated to switch back just yet. ;)

Indeed, as others have pointed out, video podcasts have been in iTunes' directory since the launch of iTunes 4.9, so it's nothing new. If you want to watch video podcasts, you owe it to yourself to check out Rocketboom which is a great "news-style" show but with just these totally random things that are really interesting -- Rocketboom is quite funny, too.

Why? What advantage does an iPod w/video provide? It has already proved to be pretty much a failure with other MP3 players. WHY would it be a success on an iPod? You're not going to watch a movie on a little screen. I just don't get all of the excitement about an iPod with video. I'm not against it on an iPod per se, but if you want portable video, why not just go and buy a 12" iBook?

What would be nice is an Airport Express with Video support. This way I could watch my home movies on my TV easily. And a video iPod with A/V output jacks would be a decent idea for showing home movies while you're away or visiting relatives.

i agree with you.

I dont know why everyone is hyped about video ipods yes they will come but it wont be as great as people think unless of cause Apple make it REALLY long battery life.

But yeah a 12 inch laptop is better or even if apple made something like a 10inch laptop instead. But we will see. Yes video ipods will be popular but when they out it wont be "wow" as we realise. i think i heard somewhere even Steve is not a big fan of the idea. But yes they will come.

But videocast are great idea deff will be great. We need more!

Mad zealotry...

I love the Mac platform and I love iTunes and just about everything about Tiger, but (prepares to get flamed....)

Why all the loud cheering for iTMS dominance? I'm not saying that they won't likely have a quality product, but competition is in the best interest of everyone. Apple does seem able to continually stay ahead of the pack, but I don't think I want them to become the behemoth that Ticketmaster is to tickets (sometimes $10/ticket service charge! WTF?!?!), nor the goliath that M$ is. I like to seem them offer many of these things, but I don't want to seem the get bloated cash monsters.

Good thinking Apple- make ITMS the one stop shop for all things media related. Perhaps soon we will buy MOVIE tickets through ITMS-
Maybe a partnership with Fandango or Moviefone....

And soon, video iPod to watch these video PodCasts on the go....

... just like Apple did with photos and album covers...

As mentioned above commandN has been in iTunes since the first week Podcasts were added.

We currently have 14 episodes listed and release a new one every Monday.

Someone sent us a video this week of them playing our show on their iPod which did not look like it had any other software installed (like Linux, etc). It played very well but they have not answered as to how they did it yet (we are working on it ourselves now).

the only reason I want a video ipod to come out is that it will likely mean larger hard drives. don't get me wrong, tiny players like the nano are awesome, but I want to start seeing regular sized ipods with hard drives over 100GB! if video is going to be what drives us to larger hard drives, then so be it...

This is where Windows Media Player looks good for the future that it looks like we are going to see.

I was thinking why not have a separate app and bundle them together like iLife and name it something like iMedia or iHub. It's a great idea because the layout for iTunes is perfect for music but for playing movies is weird. So have two apps that excel at what they do will be perfect.

It could go something like

Introducing the new iMedia apps by Apple

-iTunes
-iVideo
