Curious............ are you middle aged+. I'm thinking these high res panels are good for the kids only.

cheers

Ya Whippersnappers!
I'm almost 40, blind as a bat without my glasses, and the Hi-Res display kicks butt!

To reflect:

I do partially miss the high-res for the real estate.. was nice to have so much open and was easier to work with. But it came at a price, and I couldn't tolerate the eye strain.. maybe a 15" panel with a PPI of 120 would be more suitable for me; inbetween both resolutions.

Anyway - glad that other people find the high-res fine; it is kind of expected that a lot of people wouldn't have any problems, seeing as the 17" has been high-res only for a couple of years.

Just a pity that unlike CRTs, LCD screens only look sharp at their native resolution. If LCD's looked good at lower resolutions, then we wouldn't have a problem!

You people are the reason why apple is putting these low res screens in their "pro" machines. I can't believe people are having issues with the resolution. Like I said 1920 x 1200 screens have been on a few 15" laptop for years now. Today I believe a some 13" models have 1080p screens. Here you are complaining about 1680 on a larger screen. All I got to say is 1680 should be default by now with options for 1440 and 1920 for those that need/want it.

Or if OSX did scaling better you could have the font/icon size you prefer with the sharper resolution.

And for those who are counting, it's not simply a matter of age: I'm 45, spend more time than I should in front of a computer, and find 1440x900 too little for a 15.4" screen. People differ.

I suppose if I wasnt concerned about the gaming performance hit I wouldve stayed with the high res.

Sigh..

Resolutions like that are not comfortable on the eyes. I can't even imagine using 1920x1200 on a 15" screen - everything would be tiny. Sitting in front of that for hours on end will just screw your long distance eye sight.

If you want more screen real estate.. buy inches.

The real argument is Apple needs to have resolution independence and they need to offer 1440x900 on the antiglare models.

You're right - not everyone wants the lower resolution. But not everyone wants the high resolution.

I am in love with the high res, I don't think I could ever go back to a smaller screen. The detail is amazing.

Although I must say, aside from text being a bit annoying, my decision was also based on the fact that I game a lot. The standard res should definitely help in that department. Nothing against high-res, I think its a great option, just not needed by everyone.

I spent a lot of time recently in the NY Apple store comparing 15" hi res next to the low res. I could handle the slight differences in menu bar size and slightly smaller icons etc. But I found that playing the example videos via front row, I thought that the low res one was better. I don't know why...

Any way, my question is about gaming. There wasn't any way to compare games on each computer, so can I ask in what way does the low res screen help out? Won't games go full screen - and therefore wouldn't the hi res ones be better?

The higher the resolution you set for a game, the lower the performance. LCDs only look good at their native resolutions - so 1440x900 will look crisp on the standard res, but on the high res 1440x900 will not look crisp.

This is why hardcore gamers prefer CRTs over LCDs - CRTs look good at any resolution, so lowering the resolution to get higher frames per second in a game will still result in a fairly crisp picture, unlike LCDs.

But in contrast - 1680x1050 isn't that much of a demanding resolution for a game on the power of the MacBook Pro.

I didn't even notice this new thread when I sent you the PM.

I'm so tempted to do this: http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC373LL/A?mco=MTgxMzM0Mjk

The refurb i7 glossy. I got my antiglare highres from the online store and found it to be flawless as far as defects. I'm just concerned over two things.

1) I bought it on my new amex that gave me six months of no intrest on my first purchase. So by returning the high res I'm going to end up paying for intrest on the glossy

2) I'd hate to get the glossy with the dreaded yellow tint LCD.

3) If the gloss will hurt my eyes and what I thought is going to be fix is worse than the original problem.

I have a time machine backup so I'm not worried about data loss or the few days I'd be without a computer.

I'm actually thinking of seeing a doctor and getting computer glasses since I work infront of a monitor all day for my job and figure it could actually help me with this computer.

Choices...choices...

If only there was true GUI resolution independence with OSX.

Question to those who bought a high res and downgraded to a standart res. Did you pay a restocking fee ?

A few weeks ago I called apple because I was considering returning the high res MBP. I called past the 14 Day window so if I return it and get a standard res I'm paying the fee.

I actually might call up and ask if I can just be refunded the difference between the refurbished glossy and anti-glare.

Thanks for the reply.

So is this why I would have seen a difference in the movies?

I'm not a hard core gamer, but don't want to
Start a game for it to say things like "this game will play better in a different resilution or the game not play full screen.

Having said that, after a few hours playing with anti glare and glossy computers (albeit in the Mac showroom with heaps of lighting), the anti glare did seem to suit me...

I used a laptop with a 15” 1280x800 display for about a year (and I used it constantly). For the first month or so of using my MBP, I actually thought stuff was a little too small.

I find on hi-res screens, lower-res video's and movies do not look as good as they do on the lower resolution screen.

Interesting. Would have thought glossy reflections would have been more of an eye strain than the text that size that can be made larger (most of the time).

To each his own

It sounds as though unless it's HD content, the Hi res screens will show a worse image. Considering 99.5% of my content (video) is not HD... decisions...

Same here, things on High Res are too small for me, I prefer standar Res !

Old geezers!

Going to return your iPhone 4 as well? Is it too high res?

:p

The iPhone 4 has resolution independence. Fonts, icons, everything, remains the same size as previous generation iPhones. But the clarity is far greater.

Unfortunately, on the Mac side, the higher resolution just means everything gets smaller, rather than everything staying the same size but having far greater clarity and sharpness.
