Well, I hope that I either I will be reminded
Thanks. Care to elaborate on what you mean by "the direction MS is going"? Are you talking about Windows 8? I know personally, I will be sticking with 7 for a long, long time.
Mostly Windows 8, its fine for a tablet or any touch screen device. I fear OS X or whatever they name it next will go that direction as well. I stayed with Windows since 3.0, the next platform with most of the software I use (Photoshop, Lightroom) is Mac.

I don't want to be one of those people (XP people) who hold onto a dying OS. I like Windows 7 a lot, but not enough to stick with it till Microsoft realizes they made a mistake with 8.

Before anyone complains about this being here, I have been an iMac user for a long time now. The majority of my posts here on MR have been in the iMac section as well.

Yesterday I went ahead and ordered all the parts to build my own Windows desktop. I know, I should have at least waited until next month before I did, but I need something now and I was not going to be buying any of the current Macs. But while I have been checking this and other forums daily for bits of news on a *possible* refresh, it hit me. Why the hell am I revolving my life around a computer company? Especially one that doesn't seem to care enough about a loyal customers needs.

I am disappointed in the new iPhone, I am greatly disappointed in the new iOS update... and I could not be more disappointed in Apple's lack of respect for their non-mobile customers. Customers that have been using Macs for over 10 years. I also did not like Lion and think Mountain Lion is the worst version of OS X there is.

Combine all that with the fact that I just built a $1500 computer that will absolutely run circles in any configuration of a current iMac (and I am betting anything they are *possibly* about to release for that matter), and here we are.

I am not giving up on Apple completely. I will trial run this computer for a good half a year. If I really find it isn't for me, I can always sell the parts and return to the Mac fold... but for now, I just want to try something different.

Anyway, just my story of how Apple lost a potential iMac customer. I wholly expect the "cool story, bro"'s and the "good riddance" posts. But I just wanted to get it off my chest.

here is my build

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2268192

this is a good machine i am waiting on one more part for it and I will swap the i5-2500t for an intel i7-3770t.

once i put the i7 3770 t in it will will test as fast as a mac pro hex w3680 on geek bench. around 16500 that is the fastest single cpu mac on the market.

I will keep a few mac minis with vmware fusion running (windows 7 + ml )

Listen, Win7 is nice, no doubt. I enjoy using it via Parallels or on an actual PC at work. My main concern for you, OP, is that you're switching to a platform that is moving its OS - windows 8 - to an even more mobile/tablet-centric methodology. You don't like the evolution of OS X, it being more closely aligned to iOS, but windows 8 is far less workstation friendly... its useless without a touch screen.

And would you really want to stay on win 7 for the next 5+ years? I understand being disenchanted with Apple... its not like it was even 5 years ago. My concern is that Windows is NOT ANY better. I agree with the hardware flexibility - it would be wonderful if we Mac users could have so many choices or even build our own. But when it comes to software, Windows OS is going in a bad direction. I hope you won't come to miss OS X.

Although, if it (OS X) get's dumbed down any more, Apple risks losing many more old timers.

Best of luck to you bro...

I'm a music producer and I was told to buy an iMac so could use Logic Pro which is a really cool and complete music production software. I've built my own PC's for my whole life and guess what? I still use XP SP3 and get the job done in my quad core PC so yes, in my case I compromised to an OS for 13 years and counting because it worked for me. Apple is like Digidesign, always ripping off their costumers with overpriced MARKET hardware just because it's supposed to be more "friendly" and "stylish" for developers. Nevertheless there hasn't been a task I haven't been able to do in windows and I don't have a touch screen (neither the iMac), just the basic Keyboard and mouse set up.

I'm going this route as well and make the jump to windows 7 and if it works I'll stick with it until the market becomes serious, no company is gonna play around with me and my work needs. I would've bought the iMac if it was updated so it could serve me for a good 3 years. Having this old junk on sale at full retail price in their webpage is an insult I wont forgive nor award specially when you can buy the hardware of an updated Mac Pro with the money.

I'll just buy an iPad to look pretty

I'm getting close myself. Does that thing hackintosh well? Huge huge HUGE performance relative to a Mini, for basically the same price.

look for tony mac forum, they have lists of ivy bridge builds already

Exactly, I paid around $1000 for 3.4 ghz quad ivy bridge, 12gb ram, 2 tera hd, ATI 7870 with 2gb of DDR5!!! This thing is incredibly fast. Don't think you can hackintosh it because of the mobo but i'm going to try out windows 8 which will be a relatively free upgrade for me!
I used to own a 2011 iMac 21" mid range with the 6770m gpu. I was kind of disappointed with gaming so I sold it for a good price anticipating the refresh. That was 3 months ago, I just couldnt wait any longer.

I was all OSX since 10.4.6 or so (except always on hackintoshes - chose hardware carefully to ensure osx compatibility the entire time). Late last year I bought a real MBP. And if you asked me a year ago, I wouldve told you that I will never have a native windows install again.

But here I am now, still with a hackintosh install on the main pc, but I do have a win7 install now, and I use it as much if not more than osx. For one simple reason - gaming.

Once the steam sales occur, I noticed just how much I was limiting myself with a mac only gaming library. Now I'm liberated in my computing experience. and its great to play all the latest games again.

For anyone who is in the OSX eco system, looking to build their own PC (and run windows). I see dual booting, and choosing cross compatible hardware as a win win solution (no pun intended).

Truth!

If i didnt have to use a mac I wouldnt. It is still a huge mark up when the machines are released new but paying these prices for a almost 2 year old machine is silly.

Current iMac was released in May 2011. How is that almost 2 years old?

OP: I see no reason why one can't have both. I am confused about your reasons though. What exactly was so disappointing about the iPhone 5 and iOS6 and why does that have anything to do with buying a Windows computer? Mountain Lion is solid and fast so the focus on iOS is not hurting OS X.

This post is eerily relevant to my situation.

I am a music producer too. My company has mainly worked with Apple hardware/software for stability reasons. In terms of actual hardware our production house comprised of 1 Macbook Pro (for less intensive work) a MacPro and an iMac (again for less intensive work).

Apple has disregarded it's professional line and desktop line for too long. For purely commercial reasons I have decided to build a Windows box to replace the MacPro and the iMac. We've kept the MacBook Pro for the few Logic projects we receive. Which is less and less, it seems more people are migrating away from Logic in our experience.

For roughly 1600 pounds we've built a computer comprising of an i7 3930K, 32GB Ram and 2 SSD drives. As well as a silent computer case made by Fractal.

We've adopted Pro Tools and Reaper against Logic. Now I agree, Pro Tools is overpriced but it is the industry standard. But, in my humble opinion, Logic is far from complete. I wouldn't be surprised when 10 drops that it follows the way of Final Cut X. Reaper which is comparatively cheaper compared to Logic absolutely trashes Logic in every area except Plugins (and who uses Logic plugins professionally these days?).

I enjoy Apple products, but as a business owner, sadly they can no longer be relied upon. Although Windows isn't as attractive to use I feel much more satisfied using hardware which I know is easily up-dateable.

In addition it's more and more temping to switch my iMac at home to a Windows box. I never thought i'd hear myself say that.

I still have my iPhone and iPad, i'm not a fanboy by any means, but for me, I simply can no longer trust their computer division to deliver.

You make some nice points about Apple's apparent lack of support for the business sector; Nice perspective.

I guess I'm wondering if the OP uses his hardware for business or personal use? I've found MBP's more than adequate for a solid 3+ years of personal use. After that point, its time for a new machine anyway, depending on your use.

I also got a PC last month and i am enjoying it and steam games. Sick of waiting for stupid Apple. It is time.

I hypothesised Apple's new found direction during the infamous Mac Pro period where updates were almost mythical. And the Final Cut X debacle was the final nail for a fair few I'd wager.

That said, it would be ridiculous to claim Apple products are bollocks because of the lack of updates. I love Apple products, what you trade off in updates and power is more than made up for in terms of ease of use. If I wanted to sit on the couch and browse the internet, i'd choose my MBP or iPad over any Windows laptop at any time. But for sheer desktop computing power I think Windows is the only real option out there right now. :)

Apple products and their design philosophies have changed the world, I don't know why people can't celebrate that whilst using other platforms that better fit their needs, if necessary. Brand loyalism is quite silly, you're only selling yourself short. And at least in our company, it cost us $$$.

I'm happy with my Windows workhorse and more than happy with my other Apple products.

It's funny. I have a Windows desktop, decked out with an SSD and everything, and I use it for all sorts of programming work and gaming, as well as storing my media.

When it comes to sitting on the couch on facebook, I'll still use my macbook air, but that's about the only time I pick it up anymore. Otherwise I'm using Windows.

Apple had something going, but they lost the pro crowd, which means they lost me. I still want a retina macbook pro 13, but only to install Windows on to replace my aging Dell Vostro.

Its weird how people here complain that Apple abandoned the business users and yet retina MBP is the best business notebook on the market.

Where is the business case in doling out hundreds of laptops, which aren't solid long term solutions and are rigid in their application, to employees? There's a reason why when you walk into a company the computing hardware is dominated by desktops. It's because it makes financial and commercial sense. They have abandoned their pro business users, there's no denying that.

They have a great notebook granted, but what about the desktops? I think business users who require power are far more interested in powerful desktops and software than notebooks, especially in the media sector.

I don't think they abandoned the "business" user - but it does appear that they are abandoning the hard core video user, possibly the hard core music producer, etc. Business needs aren't that high - it's more about scalability, commonality, platform-driven stuff. It's not really about power. However, the creative applications - at least the ones using legacy software - THAT takes large amounts of computing power.

It appears to me that software like Final Cut Pro X and Logic can run fine on Apple's iMacs - you don't need a Mac Pro. But it also appears like the competitive set - Avid, Premiere Pro, Protools, etc. are still power-hungry applications that need that Mac Pro level of power.

I will admit I may be completely wrong here, as I am an enthusiast and not a pro. From an enthusiast's point of view, everything that Apple has done over the past 10+ years has been great for me. I can do way more now than I ever could, on machines that are fairly affordable and are a joy to use. However, the pros may have a different point of view.

Completely agree, I'm a PT user and Avid is no longer monopolized by a dongle, they finally threw in ADC and offered a completely native DAW that runs with any brand of AD/DA converters. Seems like they're moving in the direction I want, BUT, it's still 32bit

Absolutely agree with you, the 32 bit thing was the main reason I decided to try Reaper to run as an alternative to PT. Hopefully it moves to 64 soon enough.

"Best business notebook" on the market? Just because of a stupid resolution you call a product the "best business notebook?

Some people need CPU and GPU power, and there are many notebooks with better hardware (except for display resolution) than the Retina MBP.
Just look for Asus, MSI, Lenovo and Sager notebooks. You won't find those CPUs and GPUs in the Retina MBP.

Believe me, display resolution isn't exactly what people look for in a notebook.

Where did I ever write about display resolution?

The retina MBP has very fast CPU and GPU (which you will only find in gaming laptops), weights 2kg, IPS screen with up to 1920x1200 resolution and has a very decent battery duration. Add to this list the industy-best tochpad and a 6KRO keyboard (where most laptops are 3KRO or even less). Windows laptops with equivalent hardware are either heavier or slower. An equivalent Sager weights almost 4 kg with battery life being half of the rMBP. I have no idea how you can claim that Levovo et. have faster CPUs where rMBP offers basically the fastest currently commercially available consumer CPU (3820QM).

Besides, with double TB and very fast WiFi, the rMBP offers potentially the best/fastest expansion options than any other laptop I am aware of.

So? People can own macs and PCs. Or own a PC and still have an iOS device Or have temporarily stopped using Apple devices to try something else out.

Thank you for the simplest true answer. I was all pc in the 90's I was all mac in the 00's and since 10 I am mixed some mac and some windows. Frankly since neither one really cares about customer needs. As a customer you need to pick and choose and be more flexible then they are. Easiest way to be flexible is to be able to own and run both as needed.

Being a fanboy is the worst possible way to shop. either side will take your money and laugh behind your back.
