Now, 5 months later, it's gotten really boring and there's not much it can really do.
Actually I understand what you are saying. I use my iPhone every day for various tasks. It has become one of the tools I use for every day life.

It's when something happens that I appreciate my iPhone. For instance, the other day I needed to send some important e-mails out to various people. I needed to do it quickly. We take it for granted but the iPhone interface makes it easy to perform functions that are both clumsy and cumbersome on other phones.

I get the feeling that you may have not explored all of the stuff your iPhone can do. Try digging more into the functions and maybe download a few more apps to keep the fun alive. There is always something in the app store to liven up boring iPhone day.

I just said that, oh maybe 18,058,482 times! A lower end phone is much less likely to get boring. Read post #7.
Getting a lower end phone is WORSE, trust me. After my MotoQ I got a low end AT&T Quickfire touchscreen with slider keyboard. The thing had so few features, it was god awful.

Ok, now with all these re-switchers I'm rethinking my "great" idea. I'm just *really* sick of AT&T. Maybe I should have expressed that more clearly in the OP.

If you have any encouraging advice to stay with the iPhone it would be great because I'm really depressed about AT&T. Thanks to everyone so far! :)
How can you just leave AT&T? Is your contract up? If so, you could stick with AT&T, get a different phone by renewing your contract, then you will have the new phone and the iPhone for when you get sick of whatever other crap phone you got with your new contract.

I personally love at&t. I don't know why everyone else hates them so much. They give me excellent customer service everytime I call and I get great reception. Of course I am currently in Texas for the summer and the past 9 months I lived in Indiana and I still get great service! I even get a 15% discount with them through my school.
I'm with you. AT&T gives me almost full bars everywhere (vs sprint which gave me very few), the network is fast, and I haven't once had a dropped call in 1.5 years with them. Also they have amazing customer service.

Been there, done that.

You're not bored. You're just aching for something new.

Here, I'll save you an ETF: There's nothing another phone can do that the iPhone can't do. At least not as well as the iPhone.

Post #7 is also nonsense. Bored because 'you have nothing to work on'? Why would you want to 'work on a device' that your rely on for day to day communication? Let alone just to realize that the iPhone was better all along? C'mon.

The only phones I'd recommend for someone looking for a new experience would be the upcoming iPhone or the Pre. Try those if you're really looking for a 'challenge'.

Hear, hear! What this person said!

I'm severely afflicted by the "need something new" bug. I had a 3G iPhone, which I sold, regretted selling, and replaced. That was in November, and I'm already looking for something new again. And people think it's hard to quit SMOKING. Anyway, this was a timely thread for me. It will help me avoid being immediately tempted by the new iPhone, wait with cool detachment until I'm upgrade eligible again, and concentrate on the enormous benefit we're about to derive from 3.0 when it arrives.

Thanks, OP and TP.

A buddy of mine bought the first 8gb iphone right after it came out, then the screen went out and he sold it to me (for $200, which apple repaired for free :D). He went out and bought a blackberry and ever since he always tells me he regrets it, and he asks to see it again hah. So I agree, if you get rid of it you will probably regret it.

is his name Bilbo?

"the one phone to call them all..."

Get a hobby, then.

Go fly a kite. Build a soap box racer. Play some videogames. Learn to skate/surf/ski. Practice the guitar. Date someone. Get a more demanding job. Create a web site. Write a blog/book/poem/song. Make an iPhone app. Meet new people. Grab a coffee with a friend. Take up smoking. So forth and so on.

You're bored. Great, thanks for the update.

NEXT!

I guess I suffer from this at times, its a strange thing, the need for new technology. Its a void or a want that video games, girlfriends, kites, etc cannot fix. There is something about getting that new electronic item that is so gratifying.

Hey, I love technology as much as the next guy - but the iPhone is the iPhone. It is what it is.

Being 'bored' with it is fine - not sure what he expects any of us to do about it, though. There's 35,000 apps for it. There's a whole jailbreak community for it. If he's bored with this phone, imagine how he'd be feeling with any other phone.

What I don't get I that the iPhone is actually the LEAST boring phone out there because of the thriving app store. Dozens of new things to try on your iPhone are available every single day.

I'll say it again, you're not bored of your phone. You're just bored. Find something else to do rather than obsess over your phone.

yeah i don't see how you can get bored of the iphone when there's so much apps for you to download. it's like saying the ps3 or xbox 360 is boring when you don't have any games for it...

I agree, I am liking them more and more. When I 1st got my iPhone I thought I was going to miss Verizon, but time and time again at&t has shown through. I haven't had a dropped call yet and I have service where I haven't had before with Verizon. I also had to call customer service a few times with questions and they were so helpful to me.

Just jailbreak and start installing everything you can. Then you'll never be bored with your iPhone because you'll be spending most of the time fixing it.... or waiting for apps to launch. :D

I think you missed his point, though. Post #7 was pretty tongue-in-cheek and basically was trying to say that the grass isn't greener on the other side of the cellular fence.

Yeah, I figured that out right after I posted. Just ignore the second part of it, then. :D I guess jailbreaking is a good idea. I'll try it today. Last time I did it, I lost all my service (the bars) and couldn't get them back until I unjailbroke. I'll try it again. Thanks for the help (if you call that help) guys! I wasn't sarcastic about that, btw.

EDIT: I don't want to go through the jailbreak hassle again. I'll just wait until WWDC and see what happens with 3.0 and the new iPhone.

I would take the advice to heart but I'm the opposite. When I first came to AT&T I loved it because it worked better than Verizon used to but ever since they installed two new towers near my house service has been horrible. That's what a Genius told me, at least. Now I'm sick of AT&T.

That's exactly what I mean. Thanks a lot for the advice. It honestly really helps me! :)

I already told you I would NEVER switch to a WinMo or dumb phone. If I switched, it would be to a BB or Android device. Well, about 4 new BB devices are coming to At&t this year, so I'll see. I'm not nearly as lucky as you regarding service. Every 10th call is dropped or really poor quality. Verizon had much better call quality and service, IMO.

once you leave it, that's when you realize how good you had it

I mainly use my phone for :-

1 - Sending text messages (about 90% of my usage)
2 - Making calls
3 - Listening to music
4 - Browsing the internet
5 - Calendar/TODO lists/contacts/etc

I sold my iPhone 2G and got a Nokia 5800, and it's superior to my old 2G iPhone in all of those except the calendar.

1 - The Nokia 5800 has a landscape keyboard for text messages, making it easier to type. I'm aware a landscape keyboard is in 3.0 but I didn't have it at the time of selling the phone. It also allows me to save drafts, create folders and forward texts.
2 - Does not drop calls. Has better signal quality. Better speaker quality. Better microphone. If there's one thing Nokia's good at, it's making phones.
3 - Again - better speakers. Better headphones included in the box. Built in FM radio. Micro SD support which means I will be able to buy a 32gb card when they are released.
4 - HSDPA support so faster web browsing.
5 - iPhone calendar is similar to Nokia calendar, I just prefer the iPhone calendar UI.

The Nokia battery also withstands about an extra 3-4 hours of heavy usage.

I want to save up and buy an N97 now, seeing as it's supposed to be a vastly improved 5800 :D

Ahh, I remember last year I got bored with my iPhone and sold it, and got a Blackberry Curve. I grew BORED out of my mind with my curve, and didn't realize how great the iPhone is. One particular thing i missed was Safari. The iPhone browser is awesome.

why would you go get something like the iphone WITHOUT the app store?
doesnt makemuch sense to me

Wow! Thanks a lot for that great insight. But the only problem is that I already made up my mind. :( If I didn't, I honestly would have followed your advice, as you agreed with everything I first thought was right.

True, but if you get a Curve you expect much less. Also, did you use Opera Mini or the stock browser? I've heard Opera is much better.

Yeah,, doesn't make much sense to me anymore the more I think about it.

I agree. I think AT&T gets a bad rap. A lot of people complain about them but no service provider is perfect. The grass is always greener somewhere else but in my experience, AT&T keeps me happy for the most part.
