i surely don't think that the moderators on the whole are homophobic.

Nor do I. But I do suspect certain members are.

but to make the jump to saying that mentioning gay issues in any thread will get you banned is more than a bit much.

However, it will make me think twice about discussing it.

If at all I think there are 2 or 3 mods too few on this board. The user base is at a new high and I think it would relieve some stress for the current mods if there were some more helping hands.
You'll always get crap from users for doing your job but if you cannot deal with that than you shouldn't be doing it (not meaning you personally bous) but I definitely think there could be 2 or 3 more around here given the huge amount of users and posts...

I'm sorry to hear that happened.

There is no way to prevent comments such as "fascist homophobe" from being made, but there is a way to make the first time also the last time by following the rules and bidding au revoir to the crude offender.

Some people are misguided in their thinking and feel they have an absolute right to utter or write anything that comes to mind without there being any consequences. There are practical limitations on so-called unrestricted free speech than many have given thought to.

I don't think so, either. Comments about fascist homophobia isn't justified in my opinion.

Yes, I agree. Some threads that has been more off-topic, more dominated by meaningless banter and just as potientially offending has been allowed to stay open, probably because the threads die off by themselves. But then again, some threads that has been more on-topic and less offending has also been closed on occasion.

The difference here is that to me and to lots of the other participants in the GayWay thread, the thread isn't as easily replaced by just any other random community chatter thread. I'm not sure that the consequences of the shutdown was fully thought through in this respect.

You're right about this, too, I think, but at the moment I'm not quite sure what is acceptable and what's not.

They were, believe me. However you should also understand that we wont be intimidated by possible members reactions to what we do, as long as we (and I mean we, anything big like this is a discussed, and group decision) think it's the right way to go.

I think it's pretty hard to say, mainly because only a handful of people who will be interested in those gay threads. The probability of those threads turning into another social banter is pretty high as well. This could in turn be seen as an attempt to revive the Gayway thread, which is a big no-no.

I know that thread has to end so does the participants but I am surprised at how the mods responded. On the other hand, the mod might have a hard time keeping up in that thread and afterall they are humans but even then, they are in the position of power. (and "with great power, comes great responsibility") Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I feel some sort of polarisation has taken place in both sides though. I agreed as well that perhaps some cooling down needs to be done.

we have a saying amongst our friends that is basically to exclaim, loudly:

GGTG!

when something is amiss.

GGTG stands for

Gay
Gay
Totttttallllly
GAY!

nothing offensive about it. we love gays. and they love us. just like blacks love us. and those wop....errrr...italians.

(i'm italian b4 the flames come marching in)

anyway, i have to say that closing the gayway thread is GGTG!

and i think that we're all taking this whole macrumors thing way too seriously

and you know what?

THAT'S GGTG!

The last few months as a moderator have been hell for me at times. I don't even enjoy reading Mac threads any more because it all feels like work.

This week has been lousy and not only can I thank my actions for promoting my current attitude, but I can thank a few of you who don't know when to quit. You can blame closing, moving, deleting of threads and posts all on me, if you wish. It's fine with me. I'll take all the blame.

I hope things go well.

I feel your pain bousozoku. I use to mod a pretty big Pocket PC discussion board. No matter what you do you are an ****** to someone and some of those someones can never leave the issue alone. I don't think people appreciate how difficult it is to moderate a board. At the end of the day its best judgement which sometimes is wrong, sometimes right, and sometimes is right but seen by everyone else as wrong....after two years of that crap I quit. I didn't have the time and frankly I didn't have the will to keep being the bad guy. So I feel for you. Maybe take a month or two off or something?

At the very least take a day and say screw MR. Read a book. Find a hottub. Just a day. :)

I'd like to thank the mods for the great job they do - thankless as it often is.
How about a suggestion? A rotating mod. There are a number of members here who post a lot, and seem to be on here 24/7. Give them mod powers for a week at a time, subject to discussion, with referall (sp?) to a permanent mod for issues like banning.
Most of the members I had in mind have posted in this thread so.... my 2p
Mod shuffle?

I think people are forgetting something here, this is after all just a website that discusses Mac related rumors and whatever the members wish to discuss, But it is just a web site. It is taken way to seriously in here sometimes and I fear that the site maybe getting to big and it seems that it is about to burst at the seams. I think that just like in a pressure cooker if the thing is gonna burst you let the steam out and unplug it for a while.

it's all too political IMHO.

I have a little email of a post from mr that i never got to see. and given the amount of personal attacks in it against me, i'm shocked that the offender didn't get banned for life. but he gave his $20 so i guess he got off easily.

I really think that the level of politics and cliqueishness on this site is sad. I think you hit the nail on the head with letting the steam out

i highly wonder if there's really a need for a site like this. basically, it just filters all of the rumors from other sites, and does very little on it's own reporting.

maybe the glory days have passed and the shine is starting to wear off. like a car with 100k miles, you have to start wondering about it's ability to stay reliable and functional....

Sometimes that car with 100K miles just needs to have some of the parts replaced and, what do you know, it starts running like new again.

i could care less if anyone here misses me. i have lots of real life friends to worry about.

i just think this site has lost sight of a lot of things. am i not entitled to an opinion? guess not at macrumors. ;)

The biggest problem is that the site has moved away from rumors and more into personal interests, that is why the people are fighting now when the objective is to try to move things back to its roots.

They are volunteers, except for the huge, gluttonous and orgiastic parties that get thrown for them once a month. ;)

we are volunteers and don't get anything but our own special forum.....

and lets keep all insults, bannable or other wise, to ourselves

Nope. It's an unpaid and thankless job done by a good group of people.

Where can I sign up to be a mod? The monthly party sounds like fun! I can take a few beatings.

Don't forget to put your foot down to get some of the accumulated crap out of the engine... ;)
