I'm not in SF and really your opinion (as well as my opinion for that matter) is entirely irrelevant. Market opinion is all that matters. And obviously companion devices are selling.

Your anecdote is equally irrelevant.
What matters is actual sales figure.

Even that doesn't matter. Enough people are buying them that Samsung has deemed there to be a point to making a second generation model (which is out now). If it was a total flop, it'd be discontinued. Samsung is a business, most businesses discontinue products that no longer sell.

In the past two years, Samsung has already launched the galaxy gear, gear2, gear2 neo and the fit.
If this is a sign that they are selling a lot of them and that it's been a huge success, let's just say I disagree.
If anything multiple product launches in a short period indicate that these were not commercial success.

Typically one doesn't expand a failing product line. That's just poor business tactics right there.

Perhaps for some companies, but Samsung always launches lots of models.

As their head designer said the other day, it's in their DNA to cover the market with as many differentiated versions, as they think the public might want.

This is a new product space.
Samsung is a huge company and they want market share in a new product space.
To give you an idea of how big Samsung is in Korea, it accounts for 20% of SKorean GDP.
They are also the biggest insurance company in Korea.
So I really don't think Samsung is concerned about success of individual product.
They usually iterate fast with many products and eventually arrive at a good product (eg galaxy s3 and beyond).

I think their strategy with wearables is aimed at growth and market share, not necessarily profit on each launch.

They are not like apple.
They often churn out uninspiring products which overlap with other products in their lineup.
