...Chowdhry has a history of making grandiose claims. Freshest in many people's memories is his claim earlier this year that Apple had 60 days to introduce the iWatch or the company "will disappear" as it proves itself unable to innovate in the post-Jobs era. Chowdhry's deadline comes next Monday, with no sign of an imminent iWatch announcement.

Article Link: 'iWatch in 60 Days or Bust' Analyst Claims Apple Developing a 3D Printer

Surely his "report" on this 3D printer is pointless as Apple is clearly not going to release nor announce the iWatch unless he doesn't believe the rubbish he spouts.

Well yeah. I just can't comprehend 3D ink and I've yet to be bothered looking it up. ;)

It doesn't use ink - it uses some form of material (plastic, metal, even chocolate!) that can be injected onto a surface in a series of layers (so it has to solidify quickly). The "printer" makes multiple 2D passes at different heights until it creates a fully 3D object.

The principal uses for 3D printing are prototyping parts before large-scale manufacturing, or coming up with custom, "one-off" parts - I've seen stories of custom medical implants created from 3D printers.

Remember in the 90s when Apple tried to make tons of products at once? We all know how that almost turned out.

I don't think Apple would waste their time on this.

This dude is just making stuff up. No one should give him the time of day.

http://www.designweek.co.uk/news/ive-bemoans-rapid-prototyping/1141976.article

Jonathan Ive has blamed the rise of rapid prototyping for distancing designers from the physical design process.

Speaking to Design Week at last week's premiere of Gary Hustwit's film Objectified, Ive expressed nostalgia for the days before rapid prototyping.

'When we started out we made all our own models. Just pressing "print" is an obstacle to designers being close to the materials and the object. There is a lot of lousy design,' he said.

Ive also attributed the 'awful arbitrariness of form' to technological advances on electronic products.

'Form being divorced from a product's function is a huge and incredible challenge for design,' said Apple's senior vice-president of industrial design.

This analyst might was well claim that Apple will develop unicorns in the next 60 days. In my best Bugs Bunny impersonation, "What a maroon!"

3D printer is overrated.

With that being said, I could still see every home having one within the next 30 years. :p

What if :apple: made using it super easy.
Like:
  1. Put object on rotating pedestal
  2. Shoot movie of 1 full rotation with iPhone
  3. Sync movie to render software
  4. Print 3Dobject.

I could see Google doing a 3D printer. Apple? No.

I could see Google saying they were going to do a 3D printer. Then making a small number of overpriced prototypes. Then doing nothing more in that space.

I can also see Samsung putting out a 3D printer that only works with a handful of their "Galaxy" devices, and even then not well, and have no one buy them.

Finally, years later, Apple comes out with a marketable version that actually is easy for people to use, and they'll be accused of being copy-cats.

What kind of joke is this? Really? 3D printing is something most people dont want or need. Some people have no idea its even real. So apple will not be making a 3D printer anytime in the near future.

Only if they could track what you printed, or use it to display ads...

They'll set it up like youtube, every other vid and an ad pops up. Imagine getting a 3d-printed advert inbetween all your print jobs!!

I am absolutely convinced that smartwatches will never live up to the hype. There may be a market for them, but nothing substantial IMHO. I know nobody who wants one. Apple should not pursue innovation simply for the sake of innovation. Concentrate on meeting consumer demand and innovate where necessary.

I'll play along. What if Apple made a design store to sell 3D printing designs to go along side this product. Wouldn't even need a computer. Make anything you want from your iPhone/iPad.
