heh, I love it. Bunch of new i apps-you'd expect them to go in iLife. But iwork is not ilife. In fact, it's quite a philisophical statment, that iWork is not a segment of iLife, but a completely different thing.

I like apple.

In that case, here's my question-how close will this come to being the whole office suite (and they had BETTER do a major improvment on office, nothing like crappy appleworks), and two, how compatible will it be? Because I, for one, will stick with office for ease of use, b/c windows, sadly, does exist.too many commas. This is sounding like quite a promising event, though. Plus, it's not just music.

Edit: And, even if apple doesn't get any windows switchers through all this, they sure will get my money in greater quantities than anticipated.

iWork is Sugar

actually, thinksecret reported this earlier:

But the surprises won't end at Keynote 2: Apple apparently has two Keynote-related products in development, code-named Crossbow and Slingshot, although it's unclear what the second may be. Both are slated for a Macworld Expo release.

maybe crossbow and slingshot are codenames for the other applications besides Keynote to be in this new iWork suite.

man, thinksecret has got a connection that is just ruining all the surprises. jerk.

edit: Mudbug already pointed out this possible connection.

So at MWSF, Jobs will introduce?:

iPod mini 5GB
iPod flash (iPod sport, iPod play, iPod micro, etc)
Asteroid
iMac mini (iMac media, xMac, uMac, cMac etc)
Pages
iWorks

geez, sounds like quite a handful..

other possibilities include:
updated PowerBooks (been 8 months since last refresh)
updated PowerMacs (been 6 months)

seems like alot of announcements. I wouldnt be surprised if only 2 of the listed products actually are announced.

I'm thinking this is going to be the biggest MWSF since the original iMac and OSX was introduced.

I find the rumor scene ahead of this MWSF a little strange. The rumors are inordinately:

  • Early (we usually get a few hot rumors the night before, not weeks before)
  • Numerous
  • Richly detailed
  • Reliable (since they all come from ThinkSecret)
  • And they all kick ass

Either Jobs is beside himself with rage or Apple has finally decided that it's better to leak announcements ahead of time -- like the rest of the world does.

Three cheers for ThinkSecret's fine sleuthing.

I really hope we get the budget Mac and this new iWork suite, otherwise I do think we will be left with an Apple way too focused on the iPod.

So the iWork suite is going to comprise of Keynote 2, a word processor called "Pages" and what else? No spreadsheet ? No database ?

A speadsheet app is essential, and a simple "Filemaker Lite" app should be a given. Although I would be very surprised if we got all this for $99. I'm guessing $149 - same price as office student:teacher edition.

If they only include keynote 2 and pages, then i'd say $99.

Its shaping up to be an exciting keynote though!!!

Apple desperately needs an office suite that is on par with the standard (MS). As long as the compatibility is there and an improved Keynote, my checkbook is ready.

Yes, this is above and boyone the specifics and amount of any pre-expo leakage I can remember. I guess as a company gets bigger, it is harder to keep things in the family. Lets hope this isn't a downward trend for apple, because I'm sure this is one thing Job's hates.

Hopefully it's good; however, I'm quite fond of MS Office 2004.
Just as long as it has an easy-to-use panel, somewhat reminscent of Office 04 and can save typed documents as .doc as default (or to be changed to be default), then it's all good.

Okay, okay, okay...This is going to be a very interesting keynote from Steve. My real question is...What kind of coverage will there be? A live one here? Live Quicktime broadcast? What? What? What?!? I can't wait!

I find it hard to believe that all of these rumors will come to fruition, but nonetheless, part of me is hoping that they do! This is shaping up to be the best Mac Expo in quite some time...

Considering it's going to be shipped with the new budget mac, I think it's going to have to be $99 or less - who is going to pay $199 or $149 for iworks and ilife when they could get an entirely new computer with tiger aswell (another $99 - if they wait) for just a few more dollars?

In the past there has been a live webcast from the event. so hopefully the same will be true for this year's event. Other events sometimes aren't broadcast live (Paris Expo, WWDC, Music events), rather the webcast is released afterwards for viewing, however the past couple of years the MWSF keynote has been live if memory serves. So, let's hope it's the same this year - I'll definitely be tuning in!

Oh yes, I am quite aware of that, and I will be tuning in as well, too.

Also, I wonder if Apple's homepage will stay in its Tsunami theme until after the Keynote....Hmmm...

I don't know. People are not going to want to leave MS Office. We shall see...

I left PowerPoint pretty fast for Keynote. As for Excel and Word, I use them extensively, however they're just word processing and spreadsheet programs - I'm really only using the MS Office versions because there isn't much else out there. If Apple releases something along the lines of what Keynote was/is to PowerPoint, then I'll probably switch. Plus, I'd rather support Apple than MS, but that's just a personal thing. ;)

I don't like that name 'Pages' for a Wordprocessor. MacPress or MacPage sounds like better names.

Keep in mind though that when Apple released Keynote it didn't have a "Mac" prefix. I think Apple could do better than "Pages", but regardless, I don't think the final name of this software (if it even exists!) will have "Mac" in its name - too cheesy.

Doubt it. It is definitely a nice gesture, however (rightly or wrongly) business is business, and if Apple releases a slew of new goodies at MWSF, you can bet good money that their homepage will be updated to reflect everything.

Edit: Ah, you said after, sorry, misread your post.

iCal/Address Book/Mail

I read somewhere about Apple integrating Mail/Address Book/iCal into a single app or bundling them in their Office Suite. But there seems to be no mention of that so far, so here's a stab in the dark.

It seems like Apple wants to leave them outside of the consumer/pro designation. I understand the thinking - pro users need email/scheduling/and contact managing. More and more these days so do home users. Why not let them share the same apps and each one use the features they need. It saves complicating the product line and wasting development time that is unneccesary.

They are included with the OS and free - not bundled with a office suite or ilife that requires an additional purchase.

Hope this makes sense, again, just my 2 cents.

What about the already existing iWork??????

There is already a product in the Apple market called iWork.

iWork

So where does this leave them? I assume for whatever reason they didn't have dibs on the name. Or has Apple bought it off them?

Anyone know or have any ideas?
