Just struck me that iWork/iLife may be introduced, but not ship until Leopard...

I see no reason why they need to wait until Leopard for iLife and iWork. It would make a lot more sense to make them compatible with Tiger - most of their sales will be to Tiger users. They'll sell iLife to three groups of people:

Those who buy new Macs with Leopard and iLife included
Those who upgrade quickly to Leopard (not a huge amount at first)
Those who stick with Tiger a while (the biggest section)

We're all obsessive and will be buying Leopard as soon as it's out, but many, many Mac users won't. Every time Steve says in a keynote how so-and-so percentage of users are now on Tiger, or now on OS X, I'm always surprised by how low the number is, or how long it's taken to get there.

Leopard only iLife and iWork would be a bad idea. They'd not only miss the back to school sales, they'd limit their customer base A LOT. Maybe extra features for Leopard users, though. That would be cool.

Most people are forgetting this. What will be announced today will probably not ship until September or beyond. Much of what is announced might be a marketing primer to get people ready to buy when OSX 10.5 is released: iLife, iWork, iMac, etc.

They could announce new iPods, but I bet this will focus on the iMac and how it works with new software features and possibly new input, increased speed, and the design.

I think they will announce iLife and iWork updates to ship with Leopard.

One reason may be the number of people who don't appear to be wanting to rush out and buy Leopard, most people are not seeing the huge advantage. ow if they integrate everything into one big package then it may prove an incentive to some users.

Maybe buy Leopard and iWork, get iLife free?

Have they ever announced an iLife update to be available a month later? Not that I can think of. Why would they? What would be the advantage of buying it at the same time as Leopard? Also if they release a new iMac today, wouldn't it make more sense to say it comes with the new iLife, not "you can buy the new iMac today, and it comes with iLife '06 that is going to be obsolete in about a month!" Yeah, thats real bright.

If they announce iLife '0x today, it will be available today.

I am so ready for an iWork update. I am a huge iWork user (mostly Pages) and have been looking for an update for some time now.

I would also like to see an iLife update as well. And maybe a definite "Leopard will be available on (a specific date)" rather than "sometime" in October.

On a side note I am also eagerly awaiting the beta release of Pixelmater

When they announced iLife at MacWorld '04, it wasn't available until late in the month. So that wait was a few weeks long.

Exactly.

As if Apple never releases software long after they announce is. *coughOSXcough* Waiting for Leopard takes the cake, though.

I am greatly looking forward to seeing what Apple comes up with in terms of a spreadsheet. I don't really want to buy Office again. Only a few more hours!

What is a "traditional word processing mode?"
I'm pretty sure you know he means ala MS Word. :)

Even though I believe for a larger percentage of the home user page layout is more applicable.
"Traditional" word processing apps have morphed towards this approach to appear to be page layout oriented.

Wow all the rumors are flying. While we're at it,

[*]The new iCar is going to be released (by BMW)

[*]A Powerbook G6 (using IBM's new CPU)

[*]And Apple announcing they are switching to the Linux kernel

Alright, no more MS Office for me

I said that long ago when I switched to NeoOffice. For me, it's now no more NeoOffice. :D

Apple hit the nail on the head with this iWork update. I love it, and I've been playing around with the demo. I'm trying to convince my mom that I need it for school. :)

I love Numbers though. Could have used it on a dozen different school projects where we had to make spreadsheets. Well, I'm ready to impress this year. I'll have the best spreadsheets in class!

Not sure if i can give up MS Office just yet, will be getting iWork to test but the Office will be around on my computer for years to come but it use may/hopefully be reduced. WIll have to put Numbers through its paces first. I'm liking the update to pages but i need to track changes between a document and the other person will be using word so i think itll jst be easier to use word and i'm not sure if the track changes will work between converting to .doc and back again.

Edit: Ok i just tried it out and i'm impressed tracking changes works between .pages and .doc and back again. Comments also works,

Yeah, that's my main concern. What's the interoperability between iWork and MS Office as most people who work for big companies are still on Windows platform. Until the other 95% convert I need any work I create in Pages or Numbers to convert seamlessly to doc/xls format.
