Year naming

Pure speculation but I'd guess that we're going to lose the '06, '07, '08 tags and end up with "iWork Leopard" or something similar. It's embarrassingly late for '07, it's too early for '08, and also this would remove the obligation to update according to the calendar rather than according to when updates are needed and ready.

I just don't get this concept that if something isn't out in January then it's too late to name it for that year.

Windows 95 was released in August 1995. Windows 98 I believe was released around the same time in 1998.

While I'm not big on "year" naming to begin with (I still much prefer 1.0, 1.1 (yes, 1.1 not skipping directly to 1.5 just because it sounds like it's a bigger upgrade), 2.0, etc. But really, why is June too late in the year to name something for that year? If it comes out in 2007, then 07 is perfectly legitimate. Oh sure, it will sound outdated when January 2008 comes around, which is partly why I'm against year naming in the first place, but who really cares? It's like car companies that started releasing 2008 models in March of 2007. Come on! Let us HAVE 2007 first.

Well, it's not a matter of whether or not it's legitimate to call something '07. You're right; sure it is. Apple could release iWork on December 31 and still call it iWork ‘07, if they wanted to do so. But purely from a marketing/customer anticipation perspective, using the year in the name works best when that particular year is new or, even better, just about to begin. Hence your '08 autos being introduced in '07. It helps the product sound like The Latest Thing. When the year is (alas) half over, the effect is not the same.

Leopard, though, still has that new OS smell. Something like “iWork Leopard” would pick up a little shine by association, if they went with that.

All of this secondary to how well the programs work, of course! But there it is.

the 07/06 things is upposed to be 06. translation:

they are not shipping any more new copies of old iwork06, until june 12th. which means that they wont ship 06 at all, they will just start shipping 08.

No...iWork '06 is the one being delayed, with the assumption being that it's being replaced by iWork '07.

A Pittarelli is spot on. Apparently, if you place an order for iWork '06 right now, it will not be schedule to ship until June 12th. The implication is that they've halted all shipments of iWork '06 in anticipation of releasing iWork '07 in a week...anybody with a pending iWork '06 order will get bumped up to the new version.

Makes sense now. Thanks. :)

I think this is waiting on Leopard.

But I'd love an AMAZING new iWork next week.

WIth that said, I don't mind waiting until October as long as the update is nothing short of incredible...

I'm going to say it's going to be a part of Leopard and sold seperately for Tiger and Leopard is going to see a slight price increase to compensate. Ahhhh! Surprise feature!

Well I'd imagine you should compare iWork to Mac Office. In that case, Mac Office has no Database and Office 2008 will have no VB for Applications. That just leaves the spreadsheet app, which pretty much everyone is expecting anyway.

Not to mention that those two functions are irrelevant to home users anyway. Who uses a database in the home?! And 1 out of every 200 people I am acquainted with know anything about VB... and I have a lot of friends in IT.

(By the way, I am one of those who know a little VB.) I won't miss it. A great deal of the things I use it for are frivilous projects at work... and much of it can be written in Excel formulae anyway. Oh, and I'd never use it at home.

Good riddance, VB.

What are the major difference between Office and iWork?

- Missing Spreadsheet (Excel)
- Missing Database (Access)
- Missing Programming (VB for Applications - or whatever its called now)

I know spreadsheet app is a probable addition, but since when OSX has lacked programming abilities? There's XCode and Automator distributed with every single copy of the operating system, not to mention all the UNIX tools that are available for the Terminal users.

Database app is tougher one to foresee; there are so many database apps already (Oracle, MySQL, etc...) I doubt Apple is going to make its own. They already own Filemaker, don't they?

If they update Pages, I hope they integrate the Thesaurus better. Yes, I know the key command to bring it up, but I would like to just have an in-app window to the Thesaurus.

Pages right now is ugly and underpowered. Does anyone really think Apple is going to turn it into an all out Word replacement?

Because I freaking hope so - look at the release dates on OS X version of Word these days. Apple need to initiate the Safari Technique.

I hope they don't force us to buy. Hmm.

I also would like to see them offer iWork for Windows (to replace Appleworks for Windows).

Steve Jobs recently mentioned "manking up for lost time" with the .Mac community. Any news on this?
Yes! Why no speculation on this? I guess this thread is talking about it... but no real speculation... https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/308572/

ps. Leopard is supposed to allow dashboard widgets to sync between machines... beyond that we don't know.

Well, atleast in Sweden iLife do have a shipping estimate of 1-2 weeks.

Seems like both iLife and iWork is going to get bumped up a notch!

Yeah, they do. I'm not sure what they'd gain by integrating a database app into iWork. I just don't think most people need a database app who 1) aren't already using FileMaker or 2) wouldn't be better served by FileMaker.

Nope...

Store Owner: I'd like to put in an order for 5 boxes of iWork since I only have one left to sell...

Software Distributor: I'm sorry iWork seems to be backordered until June 12th - can we backorder this for you?

The reality is iWork 06 is (somewhere) listed as 'on backorder' - more stock on June 12th. Well, that is if we choose to believe this rumor... :)

The way to find out if this rumor has any basis in reality is to find out the 'Stock Level' of iLife/iWork at major (Apple) retailers and (more importantly) distributors. If they are all on the low end then perhaps this may have some truth to it.

Dave

Apple.com and Amazon (just two checked) both show it in-stock with immediate shipping if I order now.

did we not already establish that they are to be named iwork leopard or ilife tiger, etc from now on depedant on the current os release?

removing the whole 'i dont wanna buy iwork 07 in june of 07'... etc.

i thought this had been said a while back??

What I want to know is, who's ordering iWork '06 in June of '07, anyway?

The same type of people that were buying Windows98 in 2000. Wait. That was me. Holy flashback.

Honestly, though, I have no idea. You'd have to be living under a rock to not hypothesize, or at least ask the question...

Could it be possible that - the DB and Spreadsheet have been developed and now they are all connected (Pages, Keynote, DB, SS) via a really well thought out programming language? (perhaps available only with 10.5)
Dave

Probably they would add AppleScript support, which I don't think is currently available.

Basically people like me who just started using it roughly a month ago and my trial is about to expire on Sunday :( So hopefully they announce something before I need it again.

so wait is ilife going to be updated, because im getting my mbp tonight, would i just beable to update it later, or should i just wait until after monday

I ordered a bunch of things online a few days ago - iWork 06 was one of them and it arrived today.

My MBP hasn't shipped yet, so before opening iWork, I'll just wait to see what happens at WWDC and return the software (within the 14 days) if need be.

It's hard for me (new to Apple) to keep up with all of these updates...

Delay due to iWork 06?

I ordered a base 17" MBP on May 25th. Apple changed my ship date to June 5th from May 27th, which ended up being due to MBP updates. However, while people mentioned that they ordered the same model and had a normal ship date, mine changed again from June 5th to June 18th. I had iWork 06 preinstalled with my order. So either there is limited supply on the new 17" MBP or they are indeed about to release iWork 07.
