I just don't get this concept that if something isn't out in January then it's too late to name it for that year.

Windows 95 was released in August 1995. Windows 98 I believe was released around the same time in 1998.

While I'm not big on "year" naming to begin with (I still much prefer 1.0, 1.1 (yes, 1.1 not skipping directly to 1.5 just because it sounds like it's a bigger upgrade), 2.0, etc. But really, why is June too late in the year to name something for that year? If it comes out in 2007, then 07 is perfectly legitimate. Oh sure, it will sound outdated when January 2008 comes around, which is partly why I'm against year naming in the first place, but who really cares? It's like car companies that started releasing 2008 models in March of 2007. Come on! Let us HAVE 2007 first.

Software companies come late.

And then if you look at car companies. They have the '09s in like Feb. '08. Funny.

There is no iWork '07.

It's either iWork Leopard Edition or iWork '08 at MacWorld.

Database DB

Okay I'm gonna go way out on the Apple Tree limb on this one...

What are the major difference between Office and iWork?

- Missing Spreadsheet (Excel)
- Missing Database (Access)
- Missing Programming (VB for Applications - or whatever its called now)

Could it be possible that - the DB and Spreadsheet have been developed and now they are all connected (Pages, Keynote, DB, SS) via a really well thought out programming language? (perhaps available only with 10.5)

Yea I'd bet against this myself but it seems to be the only reason why they might have moved the announcement of iWork till WWDC.

Hmmm I sure like the idea... :)

Dave

Apple already has a very good database program with FileMaker Pro. Its cross platform like iTunes.

I'd like to see a very good full featured spreadsheet that could really replace Excel. Not just a wimpy basic feature spreadsheet that we see in all of these open office programs. None come close to being able to replace Excel in writing my income tax program.

With Keynote 1, 2 & 3 already here, iWork 4 would be a great name. Maybe with just Pages 1 & 2 out with 3 for this time, iWork 3 would be the name. After all how can you have a suite of 1 program?

Spreadsheet?

Well I'd imagine you should compare iWork to Mac Office. In that case, Mac Office has no Database and Office 2008 will have no VB for Applications. That just leaves the spreadsheet app, which pretty much everyone is expecting anyway.

Yes, but Apple has been very disapointing on this spreadsheet issue anyway. Only a very, very full featured spreadsheet would allow me to be able to replace MS Excel. The elimination of VBasic in MS Office 2008 will just mean that I haveseveral less reasons for updating to MS Office 2008. This will when magnfied by all of the other MS Excel user's make the same decision to not upgrade to MS Office 2008, will give MS reason to cancel any future MS Office for Mac updates.

This is happening even without Apple releasing a minimum spreadsheet application. This should give Apple reason to do a spreadsheet application in iWork 4. The loss of MS Office has been the main reason that the guessers have given for no spreadsheet app in iWork.

Will Apple drop the ball again as to a spreadsheet in iWork? Probably, but we will have to wait to see if they continue to or are ready to change. With all of the non-Mac Apple trinkets coming out, is there time or money to spend on a spreadsheet spp? I have my guess, what is yours?

iWork 4 the 2 spp suite for now & for the future, seems to be the truth. We can all hope. I would think that the answer will not come until very late October when Mac OS 10.5 is first to be sold. Maybe we can go trick-n-treat for Mac OS 10.5 with iWork 4 or iLife & iWork for Leopard. That sounds more like Apple's way of doing things.

VB is really a loss to the Mac group

Not to mention that those two functions are irrelevant to home users anyway. Who uses a database in the home?! And 1 out of every 200 people I am acquainted with know anything about VB... and I have a lot of friends in IT.

(By the way, I am one of those who know a little VB.) I won't miss it. A great deal of the things I use it for are frivilous projects at work... and much of it can be written in Excel formulae anyway. Oh, and I'd never use it at home.

Good riddance, VB.

You may be able to go without VB, but many Mac Office users cannot. It will be much harder to have one spreadsheet that runs in both Windows & on the Mac without great changes. Many people are not allowed to live a simple life evern if that life is a little cross platform.

A loss of a useful feature for some is a really a loss for all. There are many featurees & programs I see no use for, but I don't want them to go away as there are many that would miss that feature or item. A loss for them may translate into them not writing that great app the you & me are waiting for & need. They just simply don't write it or go to the Windows OS that was not crippled by MS in that way.

I vot e no for losses of anykind other that the loss of viruses. We need options that only you or a few other need, just like we need options that some need, but you do not need. We have to stop seeing that to be good it has to just meet our needs & expectations. Other people have needs & expectations that you or me do not have. Yours are different than mind. I thought that was part of the old "think Different" them from Apple. We don't just think different by using a Mac. We think different by doing our own thing with our Mac.

Pages right now is ugly and underpowered. Does anyone really think Apple is going to turn it into an all out Word replacement?

Because I freaking hope so - look at the release dates on OS X version of Word these days. Apple need to initiate the Safari Technique.

I really hope Pages sees a major upgrade.

The program shows such promise, and my company would love to dump MSWord.

Pages needs about 30 key features, a ton of bug fixes, some UI improvements, and speed, speed, speed.

A killer iWork would be great next week, but I'll gladly wait until October is it mean we get a stellar update.

New iLife - new MBP?

So, if iLife is updated to version...whatever...does that mean that those of us waiting for our lovely new macbook pro's to leave the factory will get the new version? Assuming that there is a new version.

Perhaps that's why they're delayed?

I'd be a bit disappointed if Apple sold me a brand new piece of kit and a few days later upgraded some of the included software and didn't give me the new version.

I'm just switching from the PC world so I'm not sure how Apple works in these situations. Well, semi-switching as I'll be getting Parallels. I need Windows - I'm a .Net developer.

I've had my MacBook for 2 weeks now, and ordered iWork with it. Both were delivered. If they intend to ship iWork 07 this week, can I get a refund/ swap ???

I use a 2.41 ghz Compaq running XP with OpenOffice and a Blue & White Mac running Panther using NeoOffice. Before using NeoOffice, I used MSWord on Windows and MSWord 5.1 under OS9 on my Mac. When I would send Windows Word files to my Mac, I would have to do a lot of re-formatting, which was a pain. These computers are on my home network. Now that I am using NeoOffice and OpenOffice, files transfer back and forth without any need for re-formatting. I can open MSOffice files with no problem, and I can send OpenOffice and NeoOffice files to those using MSOffice without any problems. It is hard to fathom that such a powerful and reliable Office program is available for FREE.

As soon as Leopard is out, and the new Macs are announced, I will be in line with money in hand.

I ordered a MBP on June 5th with iWork preinstalled- the MBP has been in the "Prepared for Shipment" status for a while now, but the application is "Not yet Shipped" and delayed until June 20th. Why the hold up?

i was kind of hoping apple would bring out new versions of iWork & iLife this year. As it be great to have a deciated spreadsheet program as apart of the iWork suite.

the only option is mac office with is alot more money than it should be.
