if i control click (i use a one button mouse after all :) ) in the thumbnail drawer and copy a slide using the contextual menu, then try to paste it also using the contextual menu, keynote crashes....

this happens every time.. I have never been able to do this without a crash, hoped this update would fix it, but no go.....

Try "Command+C" (copy) and "Command+V" (paste). Remember Apple has a one button the mouse (which may change soon (which I am happy about)) to avoid contextual menus and to use the keyboard instead. The keyboard is almost always faster than the mouse, especially on contextual menus. ;)

Anyone know if these updates will speed up Pages and Keynote 2? They are both very slow on my computer. Of course, I'm using a 400 MHz PowerBook so that might be the problem right there. Other than that, I haven't seen any bugs or "weirdness" from both these apps.

I guess things will be a lot snappier when my new 15" AluBook arrives next week :D

We probably won't see any major speed-ups with iWork until iWork '06. Sorry just 10 more months ... and yeah -- a slow computer makes a difference.

It's nice to see Apple releases software fixes fairly quickly. If only Adobe did the same.

Now I wish they would release a Spreadsheet program so I can kiss MS Office goodbye forever.

Sure I agree Keynote really beats out PowerPoint. But Pages -- it doesn't even come close to Word. Apple Pages probably doesn't even have half of the features that Microsoft Word does. The layout in Pages isn't as fast or accessible as Office's Formatting Palette either.

With bullets and numbering, Pages has far less options than what I constantly use again and again day after day in Word. The color selector is great in Pages, but it wastes time after a while because you have to close it every time after you select a color. The color selector in Word is much faster because it immediately goes away after a color is selected.

The Pages application is a step closer to Apple's software domination, but let's hope when iWork '05 is released that Pages will be totally redone. I know that Apple can do better than this with designing a word documenting application. I will look forward in seeing pages 2.0. I bet it will be comparable to Word at that point. If it is as good or better I'd actually have good use for it as I do for all of Apple's other great software products.

Word and Excel are the only two Microsoft software products that Microsoft has me still using. Microsoft better be careful because if the future versions' features in iWork beat out Office's then I won't be using any of their products any more ... accept the three-button scroll wheel Microsoft mouse that I have that I got for free after a mail-in rebate. Bring it on Apple multiple button mouse; it's about time. ;)

As far as Pages is concerned I agree with you on that one. I wish I could use it in place of Word but it cant even do a simple Outline. With Word you just start typing the outline. With Pages you have to format each line and when you hit enter and tab it doesn't know what to do. It seems that would be a simple thing to integrate into the program and it would have a lot more people happy with the program. With this function alone I could leave Word for now. I already use NeoOffice in place of Excel but the interface is uglier. The price is nice though. Who can complain with free?

As for the two button mouse I agree with you on this only from a functionality standpoint. Asthetically, the one button is more pleasing to the eye and I am willing to drop the second button in most cases. The "no-button" mouse (the one where you click by pushing the front of the mouse) is simple and beautiful. I just hope they design a good looking two button mouse rather than throwing one out there just to have one. I know that isn't like Apple but you never know. Coming from the land of three and four button mouses I don't really mind the one button now that I'm used to it. So, bring it on but make it as nice as the one button please.

It seems Software Update will only see Keynote or Pages if they are located in the original default location folder. eg. Aplications/iWork

Once you update them, you can move the back to where you want.

Thanks a bunch! I couldn't figure why it wouldn't update. That is one of the only complaints I have about Apple's Software Update. Doesn't the system know what programs are installed no matter where they are installed?? Oh well, minor problem. Guess Apple knows what is best for my computer and I should just leave it alone instead of moving everything around.

Lol... The way you say that is as if you're going to let Apple get to the point where you don't know where anything is... Software Update *is* a little archaic. ;)

Does it fix Media Viewer problems?

I am downloading this now.

I am curious if this fixes any of the serious crashing and performance issues related to QuickTime movies in the movie pane of the media browser?

I had found that a) large number of movies, b) Some movies with codecs not understood by standard quicktime, and c) reference movies with missing reference files causes the applications to slow to a crawl as they attempt to deal with these situations and time-out badly.

Ultimately the thing would be left in a bad state such that attempting to place any movies would result in the application crashing.

I called Apple about this one and screamed for days.

I think Pages and Keynote have a lot of potential, but some feature and performance issues need to be fixed first. I purchased iWork the other day from our campus store and started taking notes in class......but pages doesn't do outlines.

This drives me nuts, in Word you can put a * at the beginning of a line and when you press enter at the end it will bullet it. If you press tab, it moves the bullet in, etc. Pages doesn't do this. So instead of typing at top speed through the class, for every sub-bullet I need to stop, move the indenting, start typing and then reset the whole thing. I had to stop using Pages because it wasn't a realistic thing for me to use for my notes.

No kidding... if Apple really wanted to kick butt in the buisness sector, a killer speadsheet app would be a great way to do it...

delete page...

Mike D said:
Still a bit unwieldy, but at least now you can delete a page by highlighting the text and selecting "delete page" from the edit menu. Solves the biggest problem with the program thus far, in my opinion...

I agree. If they had just used the program for a little while this function would have been in from the start. Most important added feature for Pages. Now if only it would go fast.

The problem with Pages is that it doesn't know what it wants to be: is it a minor upgrade over TextEdit? or is it a competitor to Word? I find that it is too cumbersome to use instead of TextEdit, and not powerful enough to compete against Word. If it were a free program I might be satisfied. I bought it -- but I don't use it.

Disappointing Pages 1.0.1 update

Although delete page was much needed (now, how about rearranging pages), I was hoping that font smoothing support (it ignores OS's sub pixel setting, making fonts look extremely fuzzy on screen) and WYSIWYG font panel would be added. No go.

I installed last night, and the Pages update is nice. I haven't really used Keynote much since I got iWork last month, but when I have, I've found it to be much faster than Keynote 1. For regular word documents I still am using Apple Works, because Pages is still a bit slower. If I'm doing something that needs to be pretty though, Pages gets the job. ;)

iMovie '05 is faster for me...

They are slow on my 1ghz PB as well. i was just about to comment on that. in fact, it seems that all of apple's ilife and iwork is much slower than some of thier pro apps such as soundtrack or fcp. (witch i am sure will be fixed at nab this year.. never fear)

iMovie '05/HD is markedly faster than iMovie 4, on my 800 MHz flat-panel iMac w/ 1 GB of RAM.

Thesaurus... put it right in OS X!

I already use pages for everything I used Word for, except a Thesaurus.

For a new app Pages is very good, it will be a sleeper, in my opinion.

Bring on a thesaurus!

btw, these apps run well on the G5 dual

Flash of inspiration -- how cool would it be for Apple to include a thesaurus in the operating system -- much like they do for spelling in Cocoa apps? :D

Well I don't know what the fuss is about...

Personally I will take Pages over MS Word any day of the week. I've been using MS Office throughout my degree and have found its useless clutter of additional features an annoyance more than help. I find pages to be quite intuitive and I love the way you can simply lay out graphics and having the alignment snapping to edges is just amazing.

There are a few things that I would like to see fixed.

1. When I update a photo in iPhoto (ie crop it or change its color or whatever) it is SOMETIMES updated in pages and SOMETIMES not updated.

2. It would be nice if when I clicked "inspector" and went to the "T" for text formatting... it should display fonts. A font preview would be even better so I don't have to open my font book every time I want to see what a certain font looks like. I know there is a "Font" menu button but this is just annoying as I like being able to set everything to do with fonts in one location (the inspector should do this). Otherwise I waste productivity time just clicking in between the inspector and the font formatter. These things need to be consolidated so that you can click one button and have it do everything to do with fonts.

3. Lists too need work and it's sometimes frustrating to have to choose "none" when you've got a list made and you don't want it to continue further down the page. If you don't choose none it will just keep listing everything.

4. I think the colors menu too needs work as opening it up for repetitive operations is just time consuming.

5. If you are going to allow us to change our font color inside the font bar the least you could do is show us a preview of what color the font is. Mine is permanently set as a slightly olive green no matter what color is currently selected. The colors do get reflected in the text, but when I open the font bar it shows me that olive green as the color even though it isn't.

6. This application could be steamlined far better for the end user, I think it is a step in the right direction and I find it far more intuitive than word (I love how easy graphs and tables are) but some things are just too well hidden in the inspector for my liking

7. A thesaurus!!! This is a must.

They had a way of showing fonts in Appleworks over a decade ago... Why can't they incorporate this technology into Pages instead of using the clunky Mac OS X text formatting pallate???

am I the only one that actually likes the OS X font palette? and I'm happy about the update, I've been trying to delete a page from a document since january ;)

Not Yet in SWupdate

Hi all,

I do not see the promised updates to iWork (Pages, Keynote)
in software update here ! (I did install everything default in
/Applications/iWork). Both Keynote and Pages are working on
my machine, so installation was ok...

Any hints on this ??

Are the updates also available from the apple website as
pkg files ?

Thanks

Rudi.

So sad! I was hoping for some new templates or transitions or something cool like that. Oh well, I guess fixing bugs is important too. ;)

I'm happy to see that Apple continues to be hard at work for us. Hopefully my wife won't any problems with her update.
