I used to be a big fan of jailbreaking back in the iOS 4-10 days, but since iOS 12 I don't see the need for jailbreaking. My 11 Pro Max is as fast as ever, the battery is phenomenal, and Shortcuts allow you to do lots of things that were once reserved for jailbroken phones.

The only reason I can think of for jailbreaking is themes, the stock icons are bland but eh, I'm used to them and I don't like tinkering with my personal tech that needs to "just work". I already do enough iOS as it is (iOS dev), and I'll be using iOS 14b1 soon so this isn't for me.

Impressive exploit nonetheless.

Out of curiosity, any particular reason why you think that?
Apple needs to sign the OS before you can run it, then jailbreaking that OS comes after. If you can't even get the OS, what do you jailbreak with?

Just like, if you have candy, I can help you to take off the wrap and you can eat it, but if you don't even have the candy, what do you want me to do?

The only thing worthwhile installing is the iPhone X’s like gestures for old iPhones with home buttons, including the new SE. Once you go gesture, you don’t want to go back pressing home button.

Well jailbreaking has changed a lot over the years. Originally, it was just to install third-party apps on the iPhone. The first GEN iPhone did not have an App Store, so the only apps were the 16 built-in apps that came with the phone.
Then it became more of a hub for missing features, or restrictions that Apple put in the phone. As I mentioned before, an example of this was the fact that Siri only ran on the iPhone 4s at first, even though the four and the 3GS were very well-suited to support it.
For the first two years of its existence, FaceTime only worked via Wi-Fi, so an extremely popular jailbreak tweak removed that restriction.
Most people forget this, but before iOS 5, notifications popped up as big blue dialog boxes that interrupted everything you did. Then a jailbreak developer invented a tweak very similar to what we have with notification Center, and Apple actually hired him to work on it with them.
There was no way to get to quick settings at that time, you had to go to the Settings app if you ever needed to change the smallest thing.
So basically, jailbreaking added a whole bunch of missing features and restrictions that now are in iOS.
Nowadays, most of the older jailbreak tweaks have been taken over by things like extensions, control center, Siri shortcuts, etc.
Jail breaking is a lot more of a niche market, and it’s a lot less common than it used to be. They used to be entire websites, YouTube channels, blogs, etc. dedicated to making sure that every single jailbreak tweak, and every single exploit was documented. Nowadays, you don’t really see that as much, because most consumers don’t even think about jailbreaking. They just want the phone to work. And with the increased knowledge on how much security matters on your cell phone, it’s a lot less safe for most people nowadays to jailbreak. also, the majority of jailbreak tweaks nowadays are just novelties. Removing the animations, changing the way the home screen locks, changing the sound effects when you lock and unlock your phone, just little tiny novelty tweaks that the majority of people don’t really care about. They’re extremely cool, don’t get me wrong, and I enjoy them, but the average person is not going to use any of this stufff.
Also, jailbreaking voids most warranties, can have a dramatic decrease of battery life, can have a impact on performance, and other disadvantages that cause most people to look away from it.
However, the thing that makes me excited is that a lot of the times, Apple looks at what the most popular tweaks are, then implements them.

Google animationsbefast. A12 chip is a beast but iOS slows it down significantly. You don’t realize how they’ve slowed performance until you jailbreak and speed it up yourself.
Making decisions on animation speed for a UI is a design choice and by no means hampering the *performance* of the device.

Personally I can’t wait to put game boy advance on my mini 😀

So, anybody know if it's true that this won't stop you from using bank apps and Apple services? I read that on WIRED. I think that's my only concern, using my bank apps.

This. There were even videos showing how newer models on the same OS version were set to execute UI animations faster to make them seem faster (or conversely older models slower) even though animation speed is an arbitrary figure and all A-series chips have been more than capable of simple UI animations at any speed for years.

I’m sure Apple slightly slows UI animations on older devices with every major iOS update, or they could even have hard-coded this so they will gradually slow as the device ages; even if you don’t update. They want to make the new devices seem that much faster, when in reality iPhone chips have been more than powerful enough for most people for years.

I’d like a 2x animation speed increase across the board thanks Apple!

You have a screenshot? Mind sharing what these app names are?

the video on the first page goes through some really nice tweaks

As far as some of my favourites,
Check out Snowboard (it’s a theming tweak) and download some icons like kecil, glyphy, bladient, Kara13, blackcons, Nox, history of iOS (lets you put any of the stock icons and some third party icons from any iOS version from iPhone OS 1 to iOS 13 it’s pretty cool)

for changing colour of convos, use the snowboard UI extension with the message borders app, And combine it with Dope Convos tweak you can change the bubbles, add gradients, Change the text

Ariel 2 is to change the colours on Each item in the status bar

batterypercentX is to show the percent on Notch devices, very handy so you don’t have to swipe down to notification centre to see percentage

spectrum can theme a lot of the phone to add true OLED mode (pure blacks)

speculum is my favlock screen tweak, can move time, date to either side, make font bigger, change font colour, and also show live weather on front. Sometimes it’s nice just to tap your lock screen for a quick glance at weather

Velox reloaded are the home screen widgets

frame let’s you use animated wallpapers

gif2ani lets you put gifs and live photos when respringing

Lots of good YouTube videos showing themes and tweaks will give you an idea of what they look like in motion

Just because you don’t jailbreak doesn’t mean your iOS device is “secure”. iOS loopholes are just as many as android or windows. Sandbox isn’t everything and it can be breached. If you are a politician or any kind of high priority target, you hire someone else to manage your device security, not just doing everything yourself lol.

Jailbreak alerts people that iOS is far from “secure”. Your sensitive information like banking detail stored on a stock iOS is probably just as safe as those stored on a jailbroken iOS. What’s interesting is someone can implement extra security features that iOS by default disabled to make their device harder to break into, such as that tweak that enables biosecurity feature to every single app, or the tweak to disable airplane mode and turn on mobile data to help locating a lost device etc. It is true that some of those features may get implemented by Apple, but many won’t. Jailbreak allows those knowledgeable and responsible users to do so.

Depending on how the jailbreak is performed, iOS 13.5.1 may or may not come up, as for Apple iOS 14 is definitely on higher priority. While people can wait, just be aware that iOS device is far from “bulletproof” or “secure”. The bottom line is do not rely on tech to safeguard your digital life. Your digital life, your responsibility.

In summary, jailbreak your device don’t automatically make your device less secure. Every iPhone user holds responsibility to their own data and digital life safety. Even the latest iOS is full of security flaws that haven’t been discovered. The mindset of “I don’t use jailbreak devices so I am secure” is far more dangerous than actively using a jailbroken iOS. Be cautious and stay safe.

You shouldn’t trust the security of a jailbroken phone in any way. Jailbreaking a device can put you at risk in many ways. It requires putting blind faith in hackers who seek to exploit the OS for many reasons. And many, many people go out of their way to install dirty apps hoping that they will be “safe.”

believe it or not, jailbreaking can actually make your device more safe, not less. Granted, you’re right about the blind faith but it’s not the case across the board (I.e you aren’t giving anyone your iCloud or Apple ID info)

Some tweaks such as detector are designed to look for viruses and such that could affect any iPhone, jailbroken or not

I tried to download the 5.0.1 version on that website, but the app does not open on macOS 10.15.4. It says the app is not supported. I tried to open it in Applications by right-clicking it then open, and still does not work. I did not resign the app, as it was not instructed to do so on the website. So, as of now, it seems that the jailbreak tool is corrupted on macOS.

I don’t use Catalina but I guess you need to enable a lot of Small settings around macOS to actually allow the jailbreak app running.

I'd like to know how you can claim jailbreaking while at the same time use Apple's own sandboxing. Kinda"sounds" secure, but the two have different meanigs.

I went and watched some of the videos on what you can do with jailbreaking now... (last time I used it was on my iPhone 1 for a few years)

It made me remember why I switched back to Apple after giving Android a try for a year at the launch of the Samsung S8 --- I just like fewer options, fewer menus to slide out, fewer things to play with. That's just me. Android was fun but I like iOS better for simplicity. My phone's more of a tool - just needs to get the job done :)

Still, if people do install this I'd definitely follow threads seeing what customizations people can do... And what Apple ends up integrating into iOS 14 🤣

Please understand that I'm speaking from my previous jailbreaking experience - I haven't jailbroken in at least two years.

A lot of banking apps do jailbreak detection, and will abort (usually with a message) if they detect a jailbroken device. However there are jailbreak tweaks which work to block this, at least for popular apps. For quite a few years the gold standard for this was xCon - I don't know if that's still under development, or if other apps have taken over that area.

I haven't experienced any issues with Apple's services on a jailbroken device.

The best place to gather info on specific tweaks is Reddit's /r/jailbreak - but be aware that the signal-to-noise ratio there is pretty low, plus there are a fair number of arrested development types (guys with the emotional age of maybe 8 or 9) who troll that forum and reddit in general. They're best ignored rather than engaged, since they seemingly have unlimited free time.

If you decide to jailbreak, be sure to first fully back up your device (locally if possible) so you have a restore point should you need it. I've never needed to wipe and restore my phone because of jailbreak problems, though.

huh? ipad mini 2 doesn’t exist? I know one...lol ios 13 doesn’t exist? thought we just got 13.5?? lol

sorry what i meant was iOS 13 doesn’t exist for the iPad Mini2. They are not gonna rewrite a whole OS to support a discontinued iPad. You can’t just throw the version of another iPad on it and expect it to work

Great! This is what Apple is going to do:

* study the 0 day security breach (if Apple didn't know about it already)
* study all the tweaks the developers come up with and make a selection of what they like together with Marketing
* optimize, change the tweaks and make it apple-y
* Releases tweaks in iOS 14,15.... as features
* profit
