I just did a jailbreak on the 3GS using Redsn0w. I didn't restore first. My iPhone was full of music, movies, apps, etc. The jailbreak worked and I have Cydia on my iPhone. Is is going to be a problem later? What is the advantage of clearing out the iPhone, jailbreaking, and then restoring from a backup? This seemed to work fine.

    Thanks.

Um, you never restored your phone. RedSn0w just used Recovery mode to do the jailbreak. After that you are booted back to normal. Nothing is erased or deleted. You just get Cydia (or Icy) added to your applications.

The advantage is similar to upgrading an OS on your computer (like Snow Leopard for example) you can either do an "Erase and Install" (Pwnage Tool, or restoring the phone first) or just a simple upgrade or "Archive and Install" (Redsn0w, QuickPwn) It is usually better for your phone and will help your phone run smoother and quicker by restoring it, and setting it up as a new phone.
