That's more what I mean when I say it's a "negative."

Not in the sense that it's bad for everyone, but in the sense that there are some people who shouldn't waste their time on it. "Not for everyone" = "a negative" in my book.

I'm certainly not trying to discourage anyone. If someone finds it easy, then it's probably good for them and this issue is not really an issue for those people.
While I think I get your point, I strongly disagree that "not for everyone" is equal to "negative". Engineering is not for everyone that doesn't make it a bad thing, Painting, singing....etc.

I can download YouTube videos and I did not jailbreak my device. I think jailbreaking decreases the battery life of the phone too. I think jailbreaking is great, but I wouldn't trade a long lasting battery to do it.
My battery does seem to drain a little bit faster than before, but that could just be placebo.
For me, I'm jailbroken, simply because I can and not because I need anything in particular. Each revision of iOS, takes things off the 'Need to Jailbreak' list.
SBSettings is cool to have, but no longer essential - Backgrounder also.
With O2 now putting ludicrous 500mb data caps on the popular data plans, it means that tethering via MyWi is also of little relevance.
Everything else is mere aesthetic tweaking.

Nice sig, by the way, I had to do a double-take. :D

pros:
make your phone YOURS
bitesms
wi-fi sync
activator
etc

cons:
battery life (not EVERYONE has an issue...i do, but not horrific...)
ugly (some of the customizations people do to their iphones are scary)

other pro:
the RIGHT to uglify your iphone...

plus jailbreaking voids warranty, so you can screw yourself over there.....

A quick restore will wipe out any evidence of jb... I was having hardware issues a couple days ago, restored, brought phone into apple store and gotta brand new phone. :D

Pros:

Ability to customize phone
Free tethering
Ability to use FaceTime, view clear YouTube, and dl apps > 20mb over 3g
Snappy gives ability to open camera up in 2 sec
Ability to do away with the hated spotlight
Much much much more...

Cons:

Can be unstable at times, but very rarely
Battery and speed may take very small hit, not noticeable on i4.

yea that only works if the issue is something that doesn't break the screen.... if the issue is screen related, you're stuffed :p

Hey guys been out of this game for a while. Are their any serious new advantages of jailbreaking now? Id love to tether to my wifi iPad I realize netPDA and the other apps are probably gone, is there anything like this again? Can anyone give some advice on awesome jailbreak pros? Thanks!

PdaNet is still popular but it depends on how Nazi your phone company is concerning tethering.

LockInfo is really the only reason I jailbreak. It prevents me from missing appointments.
BiteSMS and 3G Unrestrictor have spoiled me. Oh and AppSync to trial apps before I purchase them.

Can you link *cough* PM *cough* me to PDANet and a way to get it working? Thanks in advance!

The one thing I really miss with no longer being jailbroken is being able to answer a call with gloves on by just pressing the Home button. I can't understand why that isn't a standard option.

Is there a JB for iOS5?
Last time I looked on here you had to go back down.

Really miss being able to text without switchin out of apps. :/
Also SBSettings.
I miss 3g unrestrictor too but started getting those ATT msgs about top 5% data user, so might stay away from that. :[[

Depends which phone you have. If you have an ip4 you can tether JB 5.0, but right now now JB at all for any ip4s. Keep checking in though because we are very close to getting something!

Overall JB'ing has many advantages but very little disadvantages. You can always remove it if you do not like it, and I never saw battery issues with my ip4. I miss it since i got my ip4s but I am certainly doing fine without it!

Every time there is one of these threads there is always so much misinformation.

Jailbreaking makes your phone ugly
This is ridiculous. Jailbreaking doesn't alter the springboard, except to add the cydia app icon (which is a handsome icon!). What you can do with theming can look good or bad. Totally subjective. I think some theming looks great, some terrible.

Also, with some effort, not advised for everyone, the vast majority of theming can be done without Winterboard. Then you can't complain about Winterboard issues.

Jailbreaking affects battery life
It really depends. If you jailbreak and have your phone fetching weather data every minute, run a bunch of tweaks/apps that are poorly coded, then sure battery life will be affected. If you take it slow and pick your apps and settings carefully, you will probably not notice decreased battery life. I had 30 or more cydia apps, themes with weather data, all sorts on my last jailbreak. I could not notice a difference in battery life.

Also, you think Apple code is perfect when it comes to battery life/issues...

Jailbreaking causes software/hardware issues
You know what... sometimes a beta jailbreak messes something up. Last time a beta version of limera1n caused an issue with my vibrate switch. So wait a few days and let others do the beta testing for you. Same goes for new cydia apps/tweaks.

It voids my warranty
Technically, probably does but I can't remember. But with just a modicum of care and knowledge this is not an issue. I have had hardware faults (screen issues and microphone failures) on phones that have been jailbroken. Just restore before you go back to the Apple store. I guess whether you feel that is okay is your own moral call. For me, I'm fine with it. But I'm only a pretty good person morally, not a perfect one.

But it doesn't do anything I want
Fair enough, that's fine. To each their own. But I bet it does, even just one small thing.

For me, I loath losing the ability to double tap the power button to play/pause. I don't have headphones (and won't) that have in-line buttons. So if I want to pause my podcast to buy a drink I have to take my phone out of my pocket, double tap the home button and press pause (sometimes missing the pause and hitting fast forward, arrgh!). And I risk dropping it every time.

And LockInfo!

Alright cool. So which program would be the best to use? I have the i4.

I think the main advantage is clear, you can download all the programs you want anywhere you want (I mean not only in iTunes) and save them for free onto the device. For example iTunes offers a map that costs about 100$ and I got mine for like 50, that was great.

I'm not entirely sure you are talking about piracy but if you are I think that is actually the worst aspect of jailbreaking. I imagine most people that jailbreak don't steal apps. At least I hope so.
