Is Jailbreaking really advisable? Or should I just be contented with Apple’s or my carrier’s limitations? Any ideas are welcomed!
Read up in the Hacks subforum and decide for yourself. It's not a one-size-fits-all matter. It's certainly not advisable if you can't take the in initiative to do your own due diligence on the matter.

I just jailbroke my new iPhone 4 yesterday & haven't put it down since. I don't know how anyone could be happy with a stock iPhone anymore. I jailbroke mine 4 Activator,BiteSMS,Installous,& other iOS enhancements apple is too mean to add

maximizing my iPhone posts many risks too. Hmm, but I do think those interesting apps are very tempting! I didn't know that Apple won't notice if it's jailbroken or not! :D thanks for the info!

Well, are you content? :)

Yeah, information overload! Thanks guys... Hmm, I am now about 95-5 on this. 95% decided and 5 % that's holding me back. Seems like I'm gonna enjoy my iPhone more if it's "JB'd" haha! Nothing to worry, right?! I am convinced.

Unless you try something obscure, like screwing round with basebands... Nothing to worry about :)

Thanks guys! I'll let you know as soon as I have jailbroke my phone! Very informative and helpful posts!

Jailbreeaking, for me, is nice to have for RetinaPad and iFile. Other than that, I don't miss it too much when an OS update comes out.

I had my jb iPhone 4 stolen last week and proceeded to purchase an iPhone 4s.

Thing is I really thought I'd miss the various tweaks I was using but in reality I don't !

I don't miss the slight lag I did have when opening spps. I suspect winter board was the culprit as unchecking the themes removed the lag.

I concede my stock iPhone was not as aesthetically pleasing to the eye at first as the z|ui theme I had ,but that passed after a couple of days. I've now decided not to jb this one.

Choice is wonderful.

Well there is some trial and error for those new to jailbreaking.

Installing the right stuff and just enough is key to having a JB iPhone run just as good or even better than a non JB iPhone.

I Jailbreak for .....

iFile
SSH
Allmail
FolderEnchancer
TetherMe
User Agent Faker
iProtect
3G Unrestrictor
Backgrounder
SBSettings
Protube
And a couple of other apps and tweaks.

I mainly leave themes and huge UI changes alone, as those are the main causes for the iPhone being unstable.

Do research and find good cydia sources, and don't install everything you see under the sun. You should be fine.

Oh yea, I always go for untethered JB. I wouldn't advise anyone new to JB to go tethered.

That was one main reason I did do a JB in the past, the ability to change my view and icons, as the stock views are boring now. I used it for SSH and 3G un-restrictor as well, but ever since getting the new 4S, I keep it up to date with updates and NO JB for me. Also battery life does get a little worse.

If you do not have the correct version of specific apps, and know the exact software to install outside of things in Cydia, it can be a bit of a learning curve, just depends on how techy you want to be.

Thanks for the replies guys, though currently I am still enjoying my 2month old iPhone. I will however get it JBd but not now. But I do appreciate the infos you have shared! I am still absorbing everything, haha! Truly with my iPhone the possibilities are endless!

I'm and older adult that uses the phone as a tool, not a toy, so I would never jailbreak it, and can live happily with the stock hardware and apps. ;) The phone works just fine without all the extra fooling around with. :p

I use mine as a tool too, but you'd have to be a fool to deny that there are very useful tools available with jailbreaking. SBSettings is a powerful and useful tool I use everyday, and it has nothing to do with being a "toy".

i ALWAYS jailbreak.

3g unrestrictor
weekillbackground
installous
pandora downloader
xbmc

thats really all i use.
no theming for me. i like everything to LOOK stock, but have to extra tweaks under the hood

I use 3G unrestricter as well, and I have xbmc too, but I don't really like using that on my iPhone. I do use it on my ATV2 though.

I think you'll notice a difference in performance when you jb your 4S compared to your iPhone 4. No lag on my 4S running 5.1.1 and z|ui prime

Same attitude about the phone, except that's WHY I jb. So I can get useful toggles so I don't have to fool around to get things done.

I have JailBroken every single iPhone that I have owned. Can't imagine not having my iPhone Jailbroken!! You can always do a restore on it if you do not like it and it will be like magic :D back to normal!!

Same here. It's just too amazing to be able to tailor the phone to my preferences, not Steve's.

I love themes and widgets but I simply can't live without Lockinfo and SBSettings. I use them 100's of times per day. YMMV but I love to be able to toggle WiFi, BT, Brightness, etc. at a touch of a button and do so many times per day. Getting information my way from Lockinfo is a godsend too.

3G un-restrictor and tethering on my unlimited data ain't bad either ;-)

Exactly why this adult does jailbreak. Mine's a must have, must always be working corporate tool too. JB'ing makes it usable as well as cool.

JB is well worth it, said time and time again, refuse to use an iPhone that isn't JB'd. Many people associate JB with themes etc, which is one thing, but there are way too many good app's on Cydia that make the phone simply better to use and more efficient, apps that Apple should have but won't and pry never will implement. Some great ones are listed right in this thread. For an example, for gamers, gotta love having a folder for "games" and then folders within for each genre with no limit on apps per folder.... vs Apples dumb restricted folder setup (not a big gamer here but did similar for business apps).

Themes etc are just icing on the cake, and apps like Barrel etc, can make the OS feel fresh and new/different. But it's apps like SBS, biteSMS, FolderEnchancer, iFile and many many many others that make it so worth it.
