jailbreaking is the main reason i went back to the iphone...absolutely love it.

and like above, you can always restore using itunes..as many times as you like!!

android blows, if you root and dont like. your pretty much screwed since those damn sbf files suck.

and this site makes it even easier with the help of the more exp members.

When I got back into jb, I didn't know what cydia or any of the rest of it was. However, I read this sub-forum until I had a basic grasp. Anyone who wants to jb should be willing to invest the time that the rest of us did. Messing with one's software shouldn't be taken lightly.
If the OP is willing to invest an hour a day reading the threads, s/he will eventually achieve comprehension.
Everyone says to use the search to learn these things. The problem with that is the terms are used so often with the understanding that people are familiar with them, resulting in many many search results, but very few that explain wtf it actually means. As I stated above, it is very new user UNfriendly.

Maybe JBing is not for everyone, but if people come here trying to learn, it would be nice to encounter some people who are willing to help. I know there are some friendly people here who have answered some of my questions, but there are also a lot of people who take time to reply only to say SEARCH, or even paste mroogle. The time it takes to post that can be greater than simply replying to whatever question was posted since you undoubtedly know the answer off the top of your head.

I just used greepois0n to jailbreak my Verizon iPhone, and after about an hour of toying with it I'm deciding to restore it.

This stuff is confusing as hell. I don't know what any of these terms mean or how to do this properly. I'm no longer tech savvy it seems, cause I feel pretty defeated at this point. Cydia is so confusing to use and is taking forever to load. I'm told that I need to download mobileterminal to change the password from 'alpine', but it crashes everytime I try to do it.

I don't know how you guys do it, this stuff doesn't make any sense.

I admit, at first it can be a bit daunting to grasp the whole concept of jailbreaking but as with everything else, you need to develop an interest and a wish to understand before you decide to drill deeper in to the options that JB offers.

If you jailbreak you probably had a reason to do so, maybe you read somewhere that you could add a tweak to allow you to use FaceTime over 3G? Cool, then you buy and install FaceBreak from Cydia and you're done with it. Over time you may stumble upon other tweaks, such as the ability to snap photos using the volume button instead of trying to find that awkward button on the screen - cool, you install Snappy from Cydia. If you browse sites like http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com you'll get easy descriptions of most major tweaks, both free and paid hitting Cydia.

There's absolutely nothing confusing about Cydia once you understand what it is, hell - even the iTunes AppStore can confuse the hell out of anyone at start!

Oh and btw, if the first thing you did was to install OpenSSH and MobileTerminal you're kinda starting at the wrong end of the stick. Start with easy tweaks and work your way forward and eventually, you'll be browsing the iPhone file system with the same breeze and yr mum browes her iMac.

:D

What terms do you not understand? I can easily show you how to search and understand the word in few seconds. JB is not for everyone is true because if you don't develop an interest in it then you won't be doing any research therefore you will end up messing up. You need to understand that there are too many threads asking the same questions. It gets really annoying when you have to answer the same questions when you can easily search the answer.

I thought it was all confusing at first too, but once you watch enough YouTube videos and read enough about it all on the forums, you should learn quick. I definitely don't know everything there is to know, like applying crazy themes, etc, but don't worry, everyone learns at some point.

You might ask yourself what you want out of a jailbreak. If you don't know and just want to poke around, you may find it intimidating. As others have said, hit up youtube. Great walk-throughs there.

I'm on my second jailbreak and couldn't live without it. You need to do a lot of research to see what it can (or can't) do for you first.

I like to consider myself an above-average jailbreaker, but I remember the initial intimidation (almost 3 years ago). It is a pretty easy learning curve however if you just lurk here for a while, watch some youtube videos, and then follow good tutorials on the web, such as iclarified.

As stated before, it doesn't need to be that scary because you can always return to stock firmware on an iPhone. Relax and enjoy the ride...

I was an iphone noob in Aug.... bought my first iphone (iphone4) and had it JB in the first 10 mins (jailbreakme.com) since then I have had to use Limera1n and now Greenpois0n and it's not difficult at all! Sheesh... follow the on screen instructions, they walk you through it!

As for Cydia... it's basically just another website / store that you can download tweaks, ringtones, themes, apps that do things Apple didn't think should be standard. If you don't know exactly what tweaks you want, then try Youtube. Search for 'best iphone hacks' or 'best iphone tweaks' and they will show you some pretty neat things you can do!

My Cydia Must Haves:

SBSettings - LOVE this app, and it's free! And it's the first thing I always install after JB for the safe mode

Lock Info - my main reason for JB. I NEED a today screen with all my info and notifications, new mails, sms, weather, news etc all on one screen!

Theming - because i cant stand the default UI look. It's boring and I want to be different from most of the people I know who have iphones :) My friends all see my themed up iphone and drool! They are too chicken to JB! My fav theme though is called Glasklart HD.

iBlacklist - because I despise telemarketers! Apple SHOULD have included the ability to block numbers anyway!

3G Unsrestrictor - No more crappy video on 3G vice WiFi, and no more 20 Mb limits on downloads

Live Clock - Just turns your clock icon into a dynamic real working clock

Weather Icon - So your weather icon is not always saying it's 23 degrees and sunny!

I have a few more things installed from Cydia... some ringtones etc. But those are my top for importance. And I'd MISS the functionality of those (and the looks) if I lose the JB.

As for Unclocking... I bought a factory unlocked iphone, so I never have to worry about it.

Anyway if I was brand new at it in the Fall, and learned that much, that quickly... anyone can believe me :)

I think you only need to change the password if you install OpenSSH. Instead of using mobile terminal to change the password I just use an SSH client on a computer or another iPhone to login to the device to change the password.
It would be nice if saurik updated the Cydia homepage with that information.

The "Root Password How-To" tells users to install MobileTerminal package.

As the OP has discovered, that app closes as soon as you launch it.

The JB process was simple for me. On my second phone I had to relaunch GP since I guess I let go of the reset button too soon, but was fine thereafter.
