I'm having the same proble. I finally upgraded to 4.0.1 from 3.1.3 and got stuck at the slide to jailbreak screen.

Settings

If your WIFI is "on" turn it off and try, if your WIFI is "off" turn it on and try again, should work.

I can't turn it off since there isn't a sim card in this iPhone. I already have the ip4 so this sim card was deactivated.

I got lucky twice then today, was able to JB my iPad on the first try about 90 minutes ago. Hopefully it will be up and running again for everyone soon!

I've been trying to JB one of my friends phone and doesn't work whole day. But now seems like it's working again. Just JB and unlocked. Good Luck everybody.

is this working now?

last night (uk) time, i was getting "oops..." message and then this morning it was the placeholder page...

i can't check at the moment as my iphone network has blocked the site and it's also blocked by my work!

i've called my partner who has tried on her wifi connection, and it's still showing the placeholder page. (that was about 20 minutes ago).

My fix

Just trying to jailbreak 2 iPhones 4 and I cant access jailbreakme.com?

it gives me this:

Not found (error to origin)

any ideas?

Firstly, im not a tech guru or mastermind. Im just a logical guy who is patient and uses trial and error methods. This maybe a little fix which worked for me.
(I use a Mac)
I downloaded the "iPhone2,1_4.0.1_8A306_Restore.ipsw" file via "http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750" for my 3gs iphone.

I used itunes for the restore by keeping hold of 'Alt' when pressing the restore button. This allowed me to select the ipsw file i just downloaded. I went through the normal restore process and then my phone rebooted.

After the reboot i came across another problem first. My phone had been locked to an Vodaphone.au as i had it on contract over there, but now im in europe. I had thrown away my old sim and the screen was telling me that i had to contact my network carrier to get a new sim. I was lucky that my girlfriend had a prepaid sim with the same carrier. I placed this sim in and the phone activated...thank god! Otherwise i would have been in the s%@t. Apparently you can also use what is called a "Phonebook Card" [http://www.ditsblog.com/tag/phonebook-card/] by Dits. This also works as it does not require a password and you can use it no matter what carrier your phone is locked to.

So my phone is actived and working as i bought it. Now i restored all my music, contacts etc via the itunes backup i had of my phone. This gave me a normal phone apart from the jailbroken apps.

I was in a restaurant with free wi-fi at the time doing all this so the internet was not very quick. I logged onto "http://www.jailbreakme.com" and used the slider. The next message popped up "Oops File Received Was Invalid". I repeated the process a few times but to no progress.
Jailbreakme would not install at all.

This is where i think these next steps work.

I restored the phone yet again for the last time. Activated the phone with the sim and restored my data. Then i turned off the wifi, turned off 3g, and reset Safari's cache, cookies and history on the iphone [found in the settings menu]. I left the restaurant and went home. I left the phone on but without any internet connection for about 10 hours (basically i went to bed unhappy) I woke up the next day to find that my internet was being installed in my apartment. Excellent i thought. I have a 100mb/s glass fiber connection installed now. Super fast! I turned my iphones wifi signal on straight away and tried the jailbreakme website again to see if still didn't work. I was 100% sure it wasn't going to work. I mean why would it be any different today just a few hours later?? I got a big shock when i slid the slider and jailbreakme told me it was installing. F$@^ing Brilliant!!!!
It installed perfectly and i went straight into the cydia app and downloaded ultrasn0w so i could put my new O2 sim in. Then downloaded installous and appsync. Now my phone is perfectly jailbroken and unlocked and running my downloaded apps once i synced it with itunes once more.

I think once you restore your phone you need to leave it without any wireless connections for a while so that the phone can settle the new restore. Also i think using a fast internet connection helps too. Also resetting safari's cache and cookies. I'm sure this is key as i tried maybe 40 times the previous night.

Hope this helps. I might be totally and completely wrong and it maybe just a server issue which would have been resolved within time or the server in the restaurant kept breaking midway through. Anyway it worked for me.

 That was so very long winded. I'm just going to give the simplest explanation and say jailbreakme.com wasn't working last night and it was working the next day for you. Had nothing to do with what you did inbetween.

Like i said "I might be totally and completely wrong and it maybe just a server issue which would have been resolved with time"

By the way a friend re-jailbroke his iphone while i was on ichat with him. So the server must have been working in his location as he repeated it a couple of times.

Yea it was a DNS issue so it worked for some people and didn't work for others. I was having problems yesterday but this morning it was working fine.

@dejav

that was pretty much the same for me, i also cleared the cookies etc after restore and it seemed to work
