The numbers on my desktop are graphic design measurements conversions. I typed those directly on the original desktop picture and re-saved as a new image.
For your calendar on desktop need, you might want to have a look at PandoCalendar. It's pretty customizable (Size, position, transparency, fonts, colors, etc…) . I haven't used it in a while so I don't know if there is a better one out there now.

No problem at all. There's some cracking links off that page to elsewhere on the NASA photo libraries, if that's what floats your boat. Just keep following links from one page to another - it's almost limitless! I just think the images of Earth from space are fascinating - it's not a point of view you get to see very often.
