I'm not sure the main reason for using OLEDs--if they do--is related to manufacturing or saturation. Did Ive or Cook not say that requiring the entire screen to be illuminated for everything was inefficient? I think that their preference is to be able to illuminate only those areas needed for notifications (or whichever task needs some screen area short of the whole).

You have to wonder if the whole iOS UI is going to go dark when that happens though. Supposedly OLEDs use less power for darker/black colors, unlike LCD which has to drive the whole display/backlight at all times (let me know if that's incorrect). Personally I like a dark UI so that'd be fine with me.

My guess is, it will be the year when we see a major redesing of iOS so yes, that's quite possible!

The 4S is 5 years old, I thought.

Almost, but not yet ;)

They get crucified by Wall street - those folks want constant growth every quarter or else.

The real stockholders aren't the ones that sit on Wall Street everyday looking like a bunch of idiots.

Why is apple going with OLED? to shave off another .001mm? OLED's have bad burnin problems. I don't notice anything wrong with the LCD I got on my 6s, and if OLED is richer colors and brighter, nobody will notice after using it for a few days.

I can't believe we are 3 more iphones away from OLED. Ridiculous. I guess this means we probably won't get any other kind of interim screen update, so we will have the same screen from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 8, in terms of quality.

Out of curiosity, how is your 4S battery holding up?
I gave my mom my old iPhone 5 a year ago, and her only complaint is battery life. I'm going to get a battery replacement kit on Amazon for $20 and I bet she'll use the thing for another 2 years easily.

Edit: Also, I've been on the 2 year upgrade cycle since the iPhone 3G and each has been a substantial improvement. Now, the fact that my iPhone 6 plus is "good enough" plus the fact that I've switched to T-mo (so I'm not paying for the subsidy regardless of if I get a new iPhone), I think this year will be the first time I don't upgrade every 2 years. I'll either skip to the "s" cycle with the 7s, or I might honestly see if I can hold off for 4 years for the iPhone 8.

It's not nearly as horrible as everyone makes it out to be. It does occur, by the very nature of what OLED is (mostly the "O" part). OLED is definitely not what it used to be and maybe they've found ways to push back OLED degradation even further.

The iPhone 8?

Actually it depends on lag. When the 6S starts a lagging, I'll upgrade. And since the S years mean a more significant internals leap and design fixes, it'll probably be 7S. I'm definitely giving up the yearly upgrades though.

It amazes me that a 4 year old phone is still being used by many many people! Planned obsolescence my ass!
You really are blind aren’t you?
I guarantee you Apple will plan each unit they produce to have a certain life after which they will stop supporting it with hardware and software, (same as every company). Whist the number of years may be in dispute planned obsolescence is very real.
I have a 1996 Benz. I can still get parts and service for it. From the dealer.

It lasts from 7am through 6pm. On an average day I: listen to Beats 1 with bluetooth headphones, play Pokémon Shuffle, send WhatsApp messages, browse Flipboard and read my email. I'd say it is doing pretty good for an almost 5 years old phone.

That's really impressive. I suppose Apple would replace the battery or you could do it yourself should it no longer last a sufficient amount of time.

Pokemon shuffle!? On iOS!? DO I LIVE UNDER A GRAVELER*?! I had no idea it was available!?

*I really hope someone gets the "live under a rock reference."

Is the battery included in the $20 kit? Surely not.

You really comparing technology with the automobile industry? Sure, you can even use steam car now days, they aren't any slower then they were! Nor any faster! Typical example of comparing Apples with Oranges!!
The thing with technology is that is changing to fast! You want things that work well only with the latest advancements to work just the same as they do on a 4 year older devices? Well, that ain't gonna happen if you use non alien technology!

ZZZZZ by then something will be far better and the iPhone will still be playing catch up so Apple they can milk all their consumers for more money on inferior and archaic technology.

Margina baby. Margins.

Well...
LCD screens were invented in the 1960's & the 1st OLED was in 1987; but yeah.... I'm COMPLETELY sure you're correct. Four decades old ideas will immediately become worthless the very moment that Apple implements them.

/sarcasm

I'm much more interested in those microLED screens than an OLED. They promise the similar if not better efficiency compared the latter, increased brightness for outdoor use, and of course no unstable "organic" component.

So, you'd prefer Apple go in half assed like Samsung and produce years for bad OLED before getting to something decent but with still a iffy longevity? The watch screen is used a lot less, so longevity is not an issue there.

Apple has probably 5 times the number of high end phones sold by anyone else. That's why OLED takes time, volume and having a tech that's as good as LCD's in all features, not just some.

Until lately, durability of OLED was way lower thand LCD's. Since Iphone tend to be used for many many years, this is an quite an important factor. This has only been really addressed lately.

But Benz makes money on parts, like any car maker.
