Should I do this update?

I did the Terminal Test and it came up ok. Would it hurt to download this update? One thing is for sure, Safari has been super-crashy-buggy since 10.3.9.

Uhh, they have yet to comment or release a fix for the Mac Mini video issues. I don't think cleaning up mistakes is at the top of Apple's list.

What video issues? If I knew about them then I might say differently.... but care to enlighten me?

One cannot test and find such a major screw-up like effing up Java on A LOT of machines?

Out of curiosity, what is considered "A LOT"? Anyone have the actual percentage of machines affected? I didn't have any problems on the three Macs I upgraded (tangerine iMac, 15" FP iMac, Mac mini), nor did anyone else I know or heard from personally.

boo. Gmail and Google Maps are still messed. They work ok, but some things render strangely. I get 2 columns when viewing a mail thread. Any one else?

This is the kind of BS I expect from MS who have 100,000 possible configurations to support not a company that is supposedly famed for crafting their OS around their hardware.

This is soooo wrong. MS do not have to support 100,000 configurations of hardware.

Windows has libraries full of functions for Drivers to use. In abstract terms, there's a layer in Windows which is like an interface for the drivers to talk to. This layer (MS's part) doesn't change for every configuration.... the drivers (hw manufacturers part) basicly act like a translator telling this Windows layer how to talk to the hardware. It's no different from OS X.

What MS do have to contend with is their bugs and work arounds. In a version of Windows, there may be a bug which software developers figure out a workaround for... then in a later Windows release, MS try to fix the bug... but they also have to build in a messy patch to enable the software that uses the workaround to still function in the new version of Windows.

Windows XP SP2 broke some of our software. The IsDestinationReachable API function now loops once a minute for 65534 minutes... that's 45 days... so we had to do a workaround and use another mixutre of API functions.

So in that case, MS caused a problem. I've been in contact with some MS programmers in Italy... they've agreed that the fault is regression after installing SP2. They've now added it to be fixed in SP3... which isn't going to be out for quite some time.

I usually find that Apple's OS X updates are of higher reliability than their Windows XP counterparts, and certainly this Java problem is annoying for those affected... but it's easily fixed and this type of thing doesn't happen often.

I call Bull on your Bull. Just because you know a couple peopel that were affected doesn't even come close to showing any magnitude. For reference, I know a few peopel who didn't get hit with this after installing it, myself included. Yes it's ****** that it happened, fine whatever, I feel bad for those that it affected. Did it get fixed, yes, was it in a timely manner, yes. I don't get how people can get pissed if somethign happens to them or 2 odf their friends and expects that since it happened to them it's a HUGE problem. Get over yourself.

Bull. Not at this kind of level. This is hardly an isolated incident. I deal with Windows and their PITA monthly patch release at work always wondering if I'm going to have a system that this or that patch is going to FUBAR this time around. This is the kind of BS I expect from MS who have 100,000 possible configurations to support not a company that is supposedly famed for crafting their OS around their hardware. Maybe my expectations are high but again its one thing where you have a few people here and there its another when its relatively widespread. Both people I know that have iBooks got hit with this bug and as far as I know both are running pretty much the vanilla installs of Panther. It boils down to this: Not cool.

But, at least Apple sucked it up and got the fix out there into Software Update (instead of trying to make users try and fix it themselves like they tried a few days ago)
So, you would have preferred that Apple not give anyone a work-around as soon as they had one?

Before and after this update gmail has behaved just fine for me, can't speak for Google Maps since i don't use it. If youv'e got any questions just ask.

Installed, no probs so far, actually I didn't have Java issues before, just installed because I don't like when SU lists things there for a while, annoying ...:)

Didn't have a problem with Java after the 10.3.9 upgrade, but if every update is going to be like the last two tiny ones, not even requireing restart, then Apple may start issuing dayly updates, as far as I'm conserned... :)

They are just bored, and maybe have nothing else in life then to whine!!!
I agree with you :)

As did I.
You know, you can ignore un-needed updates by highlighting it and going to : Update>Ignore Update, or pressing "command-delete".

No that would have been TOTALLY inexcusable. This was just partially inexcusable. Not the end of the world, but somewhat unfortunate. I hope 10.4 doesn't have these same problems. Maybe 10.3.9 was just a beta test for 10.4?

This is good for apple to fix so fast. My company decided to start to program in Java because all our customers are demanding it. The easiest way was for web applications and Java for stand alone apps.

My company is slow to install OS updates like that because there has to be a big QA test meeting to validate software against patches at that level. Our slow process is what prevented us to see that error, but we heard about it. It's a good thing we missed it because my company has some mac haters (programmers and VP's) and they would of tried to stick to us mac heads and said something sarcastic. Oh well, now I could say Apple is responsible and fast ... would M$ do that, that quick?

faster

I had no problem with MAC OS 10.3.9 but Safari ran slower and quirky. Then I reset Safari and it ran much better but still not quite as fast as before.
Then I installed the update and boy did it start to run smooth and MUCH faster.

You've been awful cranky with Apple the past couple of weeks... Maybe we ought to chip in and buy this poor bloke a Packard Bell running Win ME?

(Just kidding, just kidding... :) )

I noticed Google Maps get wonky after the OS X 10.3.9 update and Safari 1.3. After seeing your post, I went to try it again and it works fine now. I suspect Google fixed it on their end.

As for the Java update, I installed... but I didn't have any trouble in the first place.
