I don't follow the details of Apple's management hierarchy as close as some. Does anyone think this will hopefully improve the amount of focus to detail in some areas that has been lacking? Does this look to be a result of some peoples management plates being over-loaded and this being a corrective measure maybe?

Probably, on both counts. This puts Eddy Cue back to the things he's really good at -- negotiating content deals, managing crises, etc., while putting the App Store under someone who is quite good at running those types of things and is known for being responsive to customer demands. I'm far from an insider, but this seems like the right alignment of talent to me.

Having followed Apple very closely since it began, I have several conflicting thoughts (nothing negative, just curious) on what exactly they're trying to accomplish here.

I'd say the latter. I wouldn't call it a demotion, but he did have a lot to handle.... probably too much given all the new services (Apple Music, iAd, Cloud services, Apple Pay, etc.). I think moving the App Stores into Schiller's camp makes perfect sense, and frees up resources in Eddy Cue's team to work on their projects more efficiently (iTunes Store makeover anyone??). A win-win all around I think.

Just a guess, but Cue is probably quite happy to be more focused. He's in a position that plays to his core strengths, he makes tons of money, and I don't think he has designs on positioning himself to run the company someday. He's probably exactly where he wants to be.

So according to Apple's press release this new guy they hired who is reporting directly to Tim Cook will be responsible for:

"Apple’s advertising efforts and will lead an award-winning team that spans a broad range of creative disciplines from video, motion graphics and interactive web design to packaging and retail store displays."

Does that mean Schiller is no longer in charge of marketing? His title still says SVP Marketing. What's the difference between marketing and advertising?
I've always looked at advertising as one component of marketing. Other components such as research, product distribution, pricing, and over all sales strategy add to the complete marketing picture. I'm sure there are other components I'm overlooking.

I'm pleased to see Schiller taking over from Cue, who has effectively been demoted. The App Store and iOS both need a complete overhaul.

I'm not so sure about Williams as COO. I'd prefer to see Cook there. The last year has seen surely the worst launches of Apple products in terms of supply management—look at the Apple Watch, the Apple Pencil and Apple Music. Okay, the latter is software, but it was still a terrible launch.

Finally, I'd like to see Apple reduce their prices across the board. Not too much, of course, but enough to widen their market share. There is a fine balance between margins and market share, and in my opinion, Apple need to redress the balance a little more towards gaining market share in all their core products—the iPhone, the iPad and the Mac.

Just seems odd that he'd report to Cook instead of under Schiller. At least in the case of Ive it was made clear he wanted to shed managerial responsibilities, and moving his directs under Cook just reinforced how important they are to the company. Actually I wouldn't mind Phil giving some of this up. Apple needs a fresh take on marketing IMO.

completely bogus, of course. Cue wasnt demoted, he is one of the handful of top guys at the company. they took some off his plate and gave it to someone with more bandwidth. if you'd ever worked on a team before, you'd know why this is a good thing and not a bad thing, for all involved.

but i realize it makes our lives more bearable to believe theyre being demoted. uh huh.

Obviously I would love that (me and every other customer except Boltjames) but I don't think it's going to happen. If anything, prices will go up as Apple rebrands itself into fashion accessory provider.

Maybe it wasn't officially a demotion but it's not like Schiller was sitting there twiddling his thumbs looking for something to do. I doubt developers are going to be unhappy with App Store leaving Eddy's org. :)

Well the last three times I went to the local Apple Store the salesperson, while waiting for something to happen, (or my purchase brought to them from the back room) issued me a weak apology and interrupted our transaction to start helping another person. So when whatever were waiting for happened, I got to wait while the salesperson finished up with the interloper. I find this incredibly rude. I know they are busy, but I thought perhaps I was in a shoe store trying on shoes, while the salesperson was "multi-tasking".

Could you provide some context for your quote? It just seems to be a random story about a trip to the Apple Store. I'm cutting caffeine so I'm a little slow on the uptake today.

And pray tell, what makes you think they are worried?

Since I don't know your background, it's difficult to know where to start so I'll just give you a link to anandtech's initial review and see if you change your mind. Apple have developed some seriously impressive CPU/SoC design capabilities in recent years and TSMC are snapping at Intel's heels in fab capability.

Intel are still the leader in fab tech but if Apple could convince Intel to fab chips for them we'd get the best of both worlds. That would be amazing!

Btw, my background is as an electronic engineering graduate for over 20 years and during my time at uni I actually fab'd some semiconductors which means I am amazed by both Intel and Apple/TSMC.

It's healthy for Intel to once again have serious competition as they had when AMD were at their peak. We'll all benefit in the long term.

No. He can barely run the iOS division and you want him in charge of the entire company? He seems like a good guy but the performance quality of iOS dropped dramatically since he took over those responsibilities from Scott Forstall.

I think OS X's performance has improved under Craig and he seems far more focused on under the hood concerns than flashy gimmicks.

I think the cash pile was, originally, a leverage tool that Tim Cook (in the Jobs days) was especially good at utilizing. They could get priority manufacturing access by giving out loans to manufacturing partners to build out infrastructure and generally throw their wait around. Tim liked having that tool.

However, the cash pile has gotten so big it's looking silly. Apple should be reinvesting like crazy if they think they have room for growth, or returning it to shareholders.

Unless Tim Cook is secretly saving up to buy a country or something. [emphasis mine]
Well, maybe he did listen after all to us folks over here and is planning to buy all those countries where Apple faced headwind. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

And extending on today's news: Eddy Cue needs to be reshuffled as well.

Apple have tried to get the US government to look into the repatriation tax and make it more reasonable but so far no dice.

Hey, can I play too? What say I just write a check to the government that reflects what I think is "fair" too?
Or how 'bout this? Corporations pay what they owe for the immeasurable platform upon which they were able to build these amazing fortunes.
Defense?
Educated workforce?
Courts?
Police?
Roads to carry their products?
Basic research that made their whole goddamn industry possible?

I'm so sick of these tax-whining free lunchers and their defenders.

I think Schiller is more responsible for the strategic side of marketing, the big picture stuff, while the other guy is more responsible for the operational side of things; the tactical side. One could say, lets sell X this way in country Y, and the othe guy would run with that.

Craig for President!

This is probably the greatest photo of all time. Now he really can have Hair Force One!

The difference is that Apple aren't doing anything wrong - they simply have the choice whether to repatriate the money or not to. Remember that these profits were earned abroad with foreign customers so there is no reason to bring the cash to the USA, especially if it incurs punitive tax. Apple are already the biggest tax payer in the USA!

I'm so sick of people who don't understand how corporations work and the duties of those who operate them and yet they think they have the right to whine about them at every opportunity. They should try running one before they tell other people how to do so. And before you ask, yes I do run a corporation albeit a small one in the UK.

Still doesn't explain why this guy will be reporting to Cook and not Schiller.

Cook called Williams "hands-down the best operations executive I've ever worked with."Apple's COO position had been vacant since Cook was named CEO in August 2011.

You mean the operations executive who wasn't able to have a sufficient amount of AppleWatches in stock to even come close to meeting demand at launch? You mean the guy who wasn't able to manage the supply chain to have the Apple Pencil available with the iPad Pro — arguably the main reason to purchase an iPad Pro to begin with (I put off buying my iPad Pro because I can't buy a Pencil)? "Best operations executive"? Really?

And pray tell, what makes you think they are worried?

Because everyone would be concerned for them if they werent worried.

So say you have a Freelance job in France and pay taxes on your income in France, would you be ok with paying another 35% tax to the US for the same income?
