"Will the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter work? with this external drive"

There could be a problem due to the issue that the tbolt3-tbolt2 adapter doesn't pass "bus power" through the connection.

No power = no drive.

I've read posts from others that using a thunderbolt3 DOCK (which has its own power), in conjunction with a tbolt3-tbolt2 adapter (to the tbolt2 port on the Mac) does work, but that seems like a lot of money to connect one drive...

It provides some power.

The Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter works with the LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt 2 HDD/SSD (internal SATA).

Maybe the Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter provides enough power for SATA, but not M.2 ?

I am going to try this combination with my Mini:

Orico TB3 NVME enclosure

ADATA SX8200 Pro

From reviews, that new ADATA (w/ SM2262EN controller) seems to be trading blows with Samsung's 970 Pro, but is significantly less expensive. I ordered the 2TB model for £197

Nice. Hows it working out?

I'm rocking a 2TB Intel 660P and Jeyi TB3 enclosure combo. I love the minimalist sleek look of the Jeyi. That said.. it does get fricking hot when doing my daily backups, even if when the 660P is a meant to be on the lower end for NVME ssd power consumption.

Also, looks like the Jeyi has been updated and now half the price @ $78 USD

Gotta love competition :)

Reliability has been 10/10.

The combo didn't benchmark as high in the Blackmagic app as I expected, but that doesn't actually affect me in real world usage.

With how hot these SSD get, it makes me wonder where all the heat goes when they're inside random dubious build-quality laptops!

Can somebody recommend a 1TB nvme SSD for the Jeyi thunderbolt 3 controller? I'm going to use it with a Mac Mini M1. Found this 3 interesting :
-WD Blue SN550
-Samsung EVO970
-Adata XS8200

The price in not the most important for me, speed and heat is.

What read/write speeds do you get?
I am using it on a TB2 MacPro connected to a PCIe-Box with TB3-passthrough and I am getting 1,3 GByte/s, which is pretty near the maximum possible TB2 allows.

I have now installed it inside the Mac Pro 2013, and I am getting the same speeds. So the speed is limited by the PICe 2 bus (which the TB2 ports are connected to). You will probably get more than 2 GByte/s when connected to TB3/PCIe, at least when I take my experiments with an 970 Evo into consideration (speed comparison table at the end of the video):

I am still using this setup plus the Sabrent box connected to it. And both have the same speed which means, that the Sabre Box is doing a good job. Which it better should do, because it is TB3 certified.

i've been using EVO 970 for almost two years now, in the 1st gen Jeyi - always connected.
test today, ~80% full:
1900 write, 2600 read.
haven't received my M1 yet tho, so can't comment on M1 speeds.
Highest temperature in the last 30 days was 59 degrees celsius, average around 50. (similar to internal)

i've had zero issues with this combination.

@Ploki Received my Jeyi Thunderbolt 3 M.2 NVME enclosure. I use it with a 1TB Samsung EVO m.2 SSD that you recommended, thanks for the tip. Speeds are :
Read - 3100MB/s / Write - 2100MB/s

Not too bad, I think.

Mac Mini M1 16/512.

substantially better than mine! nice stats

If not already mentioned, some of you folks may want to check out Sabrent
nvme
enclosures
external drives USB, TB4, USB4/TB

i haven't but i'm really sceptic about single-port RAID solutions. Unless you really need portability and don't care about speed then yes, else 2.5" quad bay is much cheaper and 4xSATA3 will still be the same speed as PCIe raid since thunderbolt is the bottleneck even for a single 980 Pro.
Seems like a waste

i'll wait till TB5 for single-port raid.
