Did Apple pay or NBC? I do want to go with the former on this ("hey, which brands want to give away products for free exposures on The Tonight Show?" is a pretty easy proposition) although for promotional purposes like this I do believe the studio should be able to purchase it at cost.

I remember when I was a kid and a friend got something really nice for Christmas and I expressed frustration about not getting the same thing. My dad in a teaching moment said "If you expect the world to just give you what you want, be prepared for a life full of disappointment. If you want something, figure out a way to earn it."

Thanks, dad for teaching me to not rely on the kindness of strangers to get what I want.

I'm always appreciative when someone, including an employer gives me something, but I'm just fine working for and paying for what I need.

Should read: "Apple gives IPad Air 2 16GB crippled model to Fallon audience." This after giving free beats headphones to Conan's audience by way of an Ellen cameo gag.

The hosts have little to do with the giveaway other than approving the product, so it's hardly generous of them.

While I'm not going to say he does it alone, I doubt he's that un-involved in his show. Especially considering his past actions.

Better than that stupid bag Apple gave to its employees.

Apple gives a lot more than bags to its employees.....

The Apple Rep at the Best Buy store I worked at told me they'd be getting new iPhones soon. Also likely an Apple Watch and they let them choose a laptop a little while ago.

Looks like audience members got iPads, and so did the members of the audience!

Not to mention the audience. :)

A real gift would have been a 15" MacbookPro with maxed out specs. I'd get excited about that one for free. I love my iPad Air 2, but it would take the Macbook before I would act stupid enough for TV.

You get an iPad! and you get an iPad! and you get an iPad!

I'm pretty sure the tonight show is given money by NBC and Fallon has a lot of say as to how the money is spent. Plus he's always been a big Apple fan.

You'd need to give me an iPad to convince me to sit through that crap...

"Hold onto your hats, remove any loose fixings, and please put your windows up; you're about to go through a thorough, jet powered brainwashing at no extra charge."

Apple obviously did. The show/network isn't going to pay for them and give Apple free advertising out of the goodness of their heart.

It's just like any giveaway Oprah or Ellen has ever done. It's all advertising/promotion paid for the product.

This...

Right! How many millions does NBC and Fallon make that they ONLY gave away a $500 gift. seriously! I would walk right out of the audience if I got that! its insulting! Each person should have gotten at LEAST $10,000!!!!

/s

There are about 400 audience members for these shows. At $500 per iPad, that is $200,000 worth of iPads. Not a whole lot of money for shows like this.

it is, it's still pretty cool. Those than can care less can hawk it on ebay or craigslist. Not a fan of Jimmy but enjoyed the lip swap clip with him and Ricky Gervais.

The words "enjoy" and "Ricky Gervais" do not belong in the same sentence together.

Bah! Humbug!

sucks everyone had to pay taxes on it. I wonder if they had the option to get cash instead.

With the Tax Reform Act of 1986 all prizes and give-aways became taxable, even if the recipient neither expected nor did anything with a view to perhaps winning a prize. (In New York, where the Tonight Show is taped, there are non-trivial city and state taxes as well.) When Oprah famously gave away a car to each member of a studio audience the advertiser, Pontiac, paid a significant portion of the associated fees and taxes, but of course this isn't always the case. There was once legislation proposed to exempt the prizes won by American winners of Olympic medals, but despite public expressions of support by many politicians, no change in the tax laws was ever made. Consequently, many taxable prizes that accompany recognition, including the Nobel Prizes, are frequently refused or donated, especially when the recipient taxpayer would not be able or willing to effectively offset the incremental tax due through charitable contributions (which for some taxpayers are limited or only carried forward).

As the quoted post suggests, if Apple or the Tonight Show isn't paying all or enough of the incremental taxes incurred by the gift, it may be preferable for someone who is unwilling to effectively buy an iPad Air 2 at less than half-price to convert the gift to cash, pay the taxes, and keep the net cash.
