Whoa... that's a long time ago.![]()
(not available in the For You tab)![]()
What we most need is to lose the shackles of the antiquated 1980s cable system model. I don't need hundreds of channels I'll never watch. Let me pick and choose which channels I want. Let me enjoy content on demand on whichever device I happen to be using. Give me an interface and controller that is easy to use.
This is all an inevitability, so why do these content owners not be proactive and give it to us now? I hardly know anyone my age or below who has cable TV. The only cable we have is for internet and even that I wish I could drop as the companies are terrible! An entire generation is coming up with no desire to ever have cable. These companies and content producers are going to get desperate and possibly die off as the subscriptions drop and pressure builds.
The other thing to consider is the paradigm shift of content creators directly producing their own content independent of major networks. You also have places like YouTube that has a ton of quality, original content. These channels have millions of followers and billions of views! These delivery systems are increasingly taking up more of my screen time. There are some really great channels that cover cooking, do it yourself projects, gaming, technology reviews, etc. Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman's "Tested" channel is a really neat example.
You would think so but I think they want to lock us in for as long as possible. The problem is that they've had a stranglehold over the entire process for years. At first I was really skeptical when Netflix decided to start producing original content but they've been successful and this success is going to force the hand of traditional players. How do you compete with Netflix? One way was to not compete but use their contracts with cable companies who own the lines to block companies like Netflix or charge them access fees which make their business model less sustainable. Luckily net neutrality seems to be secure for the time being. And because of that I'm hoping we get some actual innovation in pricing structures and mobile accessibility. The content owners just have to be discussing the future or do they have zero imagination?
I am not even a younger generation and hate everything that ties me down, timeless or else.
The younger generation is even worse.
Depending on what one wanted to watch in the golden days you had to be in front of your TV at 8 p.m. or that was that. Missed episode whatever, no repeat the next day or at a bad time or spoiled by somebody who saw it.
With todays technology it's clear people want to watch EVERYTHING their way and when they have time etc..
Time shifted, only the channels one likes etc.
Won't hold my breath until they get there.
That's not how Apple rolls. Look for a company that is direct competition to Netflix, but very expensive, provides lower quality and less selection. They will be receiving an offer very soon.
Thanks for responding about Connect @genshi. I may as well out myselfI released two albums and one EP under the name Ray Grant. Each of them points to a different artist page due to the fact (I guess) they came out via Tunecore, RecordUnion and CD Baby. Then there's the other Ray Grant who isn't me, whose release is linked to mine most probably because he put it out via RecordUnion. I will consider starting a new Connect account when Apple Music staff find time to combine my releases into one artist page and Connect posting is possible either via iTunes Connect page or iTunes itself on the desktop. If I could envisage Connect really becoming a big thing, I'd consider buying an iPod Touch especially to use it, but frankly speaking as a consumer I haven't clicked that tab since about July 5th. If Apple want it to succeed, they would have to convince big name artists to constantly (not for a week or two) provide exclusive content via Connect only. Otherwise it's going to be another Google+. Cool service, nice design, lots of possibilities, zero interest from people.
"They're all technically good. And Netflix is starting to cross the code because they're starting to make some original content. It is really good, but still I mean none of us make movies here right, so we're all punters, or what do you call them in the music business, fans right? We want to watch movies. Sit down with your girlfriend or a bunch of friends and try to find a movie online. That box helps you none -- it doesn't help. You're on your own. And eventually that will catch them unless somebody digs in and really helps the customer. And entertainment needs that, it needs to live and breathe."
But just imagine the For You tab. What is he talking about? Has he ever used Netflix?
I don't need my movie- and TV-watching experience "curated" for me.
But just imagine the For You tab.
"You liked Sons of Anarchy. How about Introduction to My Super Sweet 16?"
I can't understand why people say they needed Iovine to help with the Apple Music deals - Apple had been selling music for over decade and never needed him.
Or is it because there was no SJ and TC didn't have a clue?
I'm not sure why I'm even bothering... it just makes me sad as a struggling artist that people still don't appreciate or even get what Connect is about, but, I'm still going to try and help out here with relevant info...
So, you both admit you have artist that you like, at least like enough to listen to their music. So why wouldn't you try out Connect? You do know that many artists, especially ones that are not as mainstream and that you wouldn't hear on the radio, often post previously unreleased tracks on Connect? That is one of the main points to Connect; for artists, both big and small, to post stuff (music, videos, photos) that haven't officially been released. In other words, you're probably missing out on a cool new track from your favorite artists...
Why only the top 200 artists? Do you only care about what Lady GaGa and Justine Bieber have to post? One of the whole points of Connect is for users to discover new, underground artists that you just might happen to like...
Not exactly, actually, you have to sign up for a Apple Music profile and request to manage your artist/band. The signup is here: https://www.apple.com/itunes/working-itunes/connect/#signup
Notifications would be nice, but I think at the moment you just need to click on the Connect tab and if any artists you follow have posted something new, it will be at the top of the feed.
That's pretty much how Connect works actually... if, for example, you go to your favorite artist to get their latest album, you will not only see all of their album releases, singles and videos, you will also see what they've posted on Connect, without actually having to click on the Connect tab (but even clicking on the Connect tab really isn't a "completely separate thing that take [sic] effort...")
Here is a screenshot for example. Notice how everything is all in one place...

I'm sorry that you are having such problems, but if your initial two releases had slightly different spellings or were released through different aggregators, then that could cause issues. I have 6 different projects under different band names (with a total of 12 albums) and I've had no issues; got approved in 2 days.
I've said it before on another thread, but for me, as a struggling artist, I was initially excited for Connect because I would be able to post previously unreleased tracks and videos/live performances right along side my "official" releases, and so far that is exactly what I have been doing. It's paid off in a small way, my album sales for a couple of my artists have increased, but when I read so much hatred from users that don't even know how Connect works or what it's about, it makes me fear that Connect could be doomed. Yes, of course I have Facebook (but everyone's over that) and Twitter (too limiting, can't post what you really want to say) and that's the great thing about Connect, I can talk about my next performance, release a rehearsal video or something, and still share it to all the other social networking sites directly from Connect!
And even though most of you us (the computer geeks that we all are) don't do "artist adoration" (which isn't all that Connect is about) the majority of average people do do artist adoration, which is why reality shows and things like TMZ are more popular than any other form of entertainment (unfortunately.) So Connect should be perfect for them.
Anyway, though I really am pretty much an unknown/underground artist, thanks to Connect, I've actually had the head of Apple's Artist Integration follow me on Twitter, and then promote my Science Patrol project in the "Discovered on Connect" section of Apple Music! Right along side a couple of bigger artists... and that made my day. I'm just hoping that Connect will help to grow my user-base and allow people to discover my work who would have not previously been able to find me... which is the whole point to Connect.

Agreed. It has gotten overcomplicated and I do not like it. I used to be the guru of all things computers, now I don't like looking at my iOS music app because it confuses me. I will take some blame that I am getting old, but this should be easy and intuitive.Urgh I don't know what's going on with all of this, Iovine and Tim Cook seem to be believing their own hype. I mean, the music app just seems to be getting worse and worse, you have to swipe around like a damned magician just to get the simple big play/pause features - it's just completely counterintuitive. I haven't used the Apple Music app myself, though from screenshots/feedback from other posters, it seems that they've made a mess of this too.
They seem to be seeing something we're not. It's a darned music app, not an oil painting. Once you're making it more difficult just to do things like adjust volume consistently, scrub through songs accurately, and swipe around to get basic features like skip/play/pause, it's form over function.
Not only do I agree with you about all the cool stuff connect does, but because of it, I'm actually one of the people to watch that Science Patrol video and I loved it! As a music fan, THANK YOU for using connect to its full potential and remember, there may only be a few of us right now, but those of us who DO use connect as it was intended do indeed understand how it works and what it does and LOVE what artists like you are doing with it! Please please don't give up!
On another note, what other projects do you have on there? I'd LOVE to check them out? All this discovery stuff Apple has created is just amazing to me. It's made music a hobby again rather than just a consumer product. I've spent hours just randomly checking out artists and their connect pages and whatever else I can find. I LOVE getting lost in Apple Music! Also, "Out of This World" is EPIC! I love it!
Thank you very much for this... I can't even explain how much that means to me!
I've been doing this for quite a long while, and during the 1990s was offered 3 Record Deals from major labels (including Capitol Records) but after long negotiations where they refused to let me have publishing rights or even self-produce my own music (the music that they liked enough to want to sign me in the first place!) I walked away from the deals. It would have been easy for me to just sign, get my quarter of a million dollar advance, and live the "rock star" life style... but I would have lost all control of my music.
So now that I have complete control of my music, of course, I am struggling (and having lost my last day job 5 years ago, am now truly a starving artist) so I do sometimes think of giving up on it all... but I also know that I can't, and comments like yours is what keeps me going! Thanks again.
Most of my other music projects can be found on my record label here (all the current releases are all me, with the "Mielikki" project also including my girlfriend) - http://www.zerogenshi.com/index2.html
but I do have a couple of projects that have yet to be officially released, mostly my film score stuff and ambient stuff which can be found on my Soundcloud here - https://soundcloud.com/genshi
