Why? I really don't see the value in an Apple TV. Especially when it'll be locked down like other Apple devices.

A lot of people see a great deal of value in Apple's locked down ecosystem, in case you hadn't noticed. Apple isn't posting record quarters by accident, nor are they driving the industry by accident, nor are consumers salivating over their products by accident. You're actually in the minority with your opinion. Except on MacRumors, where the most out-of-touch minority in the market form the majority on internet forums. :D

Enjoy it... you'll want to wait for V2 anyway! :D

Hehe ;)

Well I do love this set. Sony still knows how to make TVs, that's for sure. They've taken LCD tech to a whole new level. Their current sets actually demonstrate quality not just in performance, but design as well. Imagine that.

Good for them.

Honestly... I don't mind the Apple Premium Price. I'm buying a premium product that I know lasts. Like the MacBook Pro I'm typing on right now. 4-5 Years old and runs perfect. The only issue is some of the keys are worn down and you can't read the letters anymore. Cost more, but flawless over the years.

Can't say the same for my friend with his really "kick-butt" Toshiba (as he put it when he bought it)... two years old and has had a logic board replaced. Keyboard stopped working ($75 fix), one of his USB ports does not work, reinstalled Windows a couple times. Virus issues... Needless to say... he's waiting for the new MBP's to come out.

(ha, ha, here I am - a proponent of keeping threads on track)

I agree - Apple stuff is worth it... I love all mine, but wish I can afford them (can't anymore).

AFA this thread - Apple can't at all compete in the TV space - their AppleTV device is great and I think that's where they'll put their efforts.

Didn't they once say that Apple couldn't compete in the mobile phone space?

I'd wager that any consumer tech space that Apple enters into will likely emerge very different, with Apple showing the way forward. This is par for the course for Apple.

I do not recall that as being a common sentiment before 2007.

If it can't at least match a three year old Dell system

to your list.

Sony mentioned doing something like this a few years back, strictly viewing what Sony put on their tv's to watch, and was grilled bad enough to drop it. Unless their still planning this under the radar. There is no way I would buy a tv locked down by any maker. Would probably be priced out of most folks reach anyway like the Mac pro's are. I'll pass if this comes out.

LOL - Dell. Every Dell owner I know grew fed up with that company and never purchased another product from them. The definitive "cheap" computer and I don't mean price.

My three year old Dell Latitude has a built-in 3G radio and a Quadro mobile GPU - does any Apple laptop?

My three year old Dell mini-tower - oh, wait - no need to say any more.... ;)

Of course, these weren't $300 computers. The line that "you get what you pay for" is quite true - however the business level (that is, not sold in Best Buy) Dells do very well against Apples in a similar price range.

For the price of an Apple - you get more. To match an Apple, you pay less.

Bloomberg:

Apple iPhone Will Fail in a Late, Defensive Move: Matthew Lynn
January 14, 2007

"...The iPhone is nothing more than a luxury bauble that will appeal to a few gadget freaks. In terms of its impact on the industry, the iPhone is less relevant." ...

The Register:
Why the Apple phone will fail, and fail badly
December 23, 2006

"The hype is reaching fever-pitch, and the odds are still stacked that Apple will announce a device combining the functionality of an iPod and a mobile phone in January next year, but whether such a device will actually sell is another question.

There seems little question that an Apple phone product will be launched in 2007, and that it will work with the iTunes service and have a very pretty industrial design and a smooth interface. Strapping an iPod to a mobile phone is not a great technical challenge, which makes it all the more remarkable that Motorola did it so badly with their ROKR handset. Maintaining the features which made the iPod so popular in a mobile phone will be much more of a challenge. ..."

Perspective: The Apple phone flop
By Michael Kanellos
December 7, 2006

I just looked at the calendar and realized that:
(a) It's only a few weeks to Macworld, where Apple Computer is expected to release a smart phone similar to the BlackBerry, and:
(b) I haven't antagonized Apple fans in a while. It's my birthday this week, after all, and I need to get more fun out of turning 45 than just counting the new moles on my back.

So, anyways, Apple is slated to come out with a new phone. Reports say that it will have a slide-out keyboard, 4GB or 8GB of storage, and work on CDMA or GSM cellular networks. It will start at $249 before subscription rebates.
And it will largely fail. ...

The poor CNET editor is now reduced to trolling macrumors.

There are more I could share of course.

Of course no one had seen a real smart phone yet.

3G radio? Come on man.

My three year old Dell mini-tower - oh, wait - no need to say any more.... ;)

If that mini-tower is supposed to be a selling point then yes you need to say more. Oh never mind

I buy an Apple and I own it for years. My friend buys a Dell, gets tired of it not working after a year and buys an Apple. Of course they went for the price tag. But if I'm going to pay for the higher priced Dell that supposedly works, I'll get the computer with the better OS.

yeah, this is a great idea.. just like the great selling lcd display, that gets recycled about every 5 years.

which Dell?

As I said - which Dell?

The $300 Dell specials are worth every penny. And they're trash compared to the $1000 business Dells and $2000 Apples.

But if I'm going to pay for the Dell that works, I'll get the computer with the better OS.

Yes, Windows 7 for the win.

Apple's focus on Itoys has left Apple OSX to wither.

If Apple sold a TV, it would be the most expensive 720p TV on the market.

Actually, it would be the only 720p TV on the market.

I'm sure it is about the AppleTV.

Considering the cost of Apple's computer displays, I have no interest in forking out even more for a television.

I set top box and PVR built into the AppleTV as well would be nice. And maybe even Blu-Ray, Mr. Jobs.

Why do you say it would be the "Only" one ?

I'm referring to the maximum resolution. Surely no-one is still selling those dodgy mid-HD panels still (1366x768)? Maybe on a 15" portable or something. But I'm talking about TVs the size that everyone's buying, ie. 40-50". They're all 1080p.

Apple doesn't understand HD TV. They don't want to know about it. They are slowly being dragged, kicking and screaming, into HD but mention 1080p and it's still fingers in ears "lahlahlahlahlahlahlah I can't hear you".

I paid $1100 for a laptop that has lasted me since mid 2009. My previous ibook was the same price and lasted me three years and is now used by a family member. Stop exaggerating on price.

For customer support reasons you should try HP. While I've had first hand experience with irate Dell owners, I haven't really been aware of angry HP owners. Perhaps they have better support? And you could use your windows too!

not in favor of aapl tv set - unless of course it is "magical" and "snappy" - ugh sarcasm

Apple's focus on Itoys has left Apple OSX to wither.

How?

Win7 is still inferior to OS X. Apple's allegedly laziest effort can barely be matched by the competition's best. It can never anyway, because as Alan Kay has written: "People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware." Apple does.

Besides, what else would you want out of OS X? We're coming to the end of the classical conception of the "computer operating system." There's only so much Apple can do with a 10.xx OS before they have to change the game entirely. And they have, with iOS, which in turn brings the promise of Lion. Those "iToys" you and the other Forever out-of-touch on MR love to deride, are what's pushing this industry forward. Entire business models in other industries are being built and rebuilt around the iOS model. The competition is falling all over themselves trying to copy these iToys. These same iToys are *what people want*, and are presenting the kind of value proposition that has been heretofore unheard-of in the land of the classic computer.

Apple is developing the next iteration: Lion. And it is NECESSARY for it to be based strongly on iOS elements. That's the reality you and others must deal with.

Your idea of an "operating system" is stuck in the past. Why not bring it up to date to match your usually progressive and forward-looking social views? I'm surprised.

your point is?

While I've had first hand experience with irate Dell owners, I haven't really been aware of angry HP owners. Perhaps they have better support? And you could use your windows too!

Nice charts, but they don't have any information about the systems involved.

I said that $300 Dells were trash compared to the business class Dells in the same price range as Apples.

Can this be surprising?

Who cares, anyway?

It makes no difference what hardware du jour is shoved into Dell boxes.

No OS X, no sale.
