When do you start ?
It depends on when they get my results for my drug/background check. He said if he gets it early, then sometime next week. If there's any delay, then the week of the 12th.
Told you you'd get there in the end. Congrats. Now just remember to save those first few pay checks rather than splurge it all on shiny new Apple products!Well guys.. got some pretty good news!!
Had an interview yesterday and they ended up giving me a background check form to fill out and all of the materials to get drug tested - went and did that today. He told me once the results come back clean on his end, he's looking forward to starting the week of the 5th - which is next week!! I was not expecting that at all but I'm ecstatic.

But.. but.. I want the new Macbook Pro!! LOL. Nah, I definitely am gonna save some first since I have to make up for the lost time. Once I actually am stable I might eyeball it again.
Good for you. It's always a good idea to have at least a couple of months salary in savings for just in case expenses (and preferably more).Thank you!! It was bumpy road but I'm almost there. Once I get an official offer I'll be celebrating.

I'm at step 7, but skipped step 2 as I decided not to have debt in the first place.Ramsey's baby steps.
- Baby Step 1 – $1,000 to start an Emergency Fund
- Baby Step 2 – Pay off all debt (not house mortgage) using the Debt Snowball
- Baby Step 3 – 3 to 6 months of expenses in savings
- Baby Step 4 – Invest 15% of household income into Roth IRAs and pre-tax retirement
- Baby Step 5 – College funding for children
- Baby Step 6 – Pay off home early
- Baby Step 7 – Build wealth and give
Baby Step 2's Debt Snowball: pay the lowest debt first, don't look at APR %. Once first debt is paid, use that saved $ to pay for the second debt. Then the third. And so on.

Sadly to many people these days start getting paid and the first thing they go and do is get a credit card! I was watching an article on pay day loans just the other day. Shocking how many people use them.
Nothing wrong with wanting nice things, but you don't have to get them all in the first month.
Hope they don't keep you waiting too long for that formal offer.

As far as the background check, I don't know how long that takes. He submitted it on Tuesday during the interview.
Congratulations. In my experience background checks can take from a couple minutes (basic criminal/sexual offender) to a few days if they are checking references and doing some followups. And it will also depend on if they have to check with several states.
I was absolutely shameless on my last interview and subsequent follow up calls. Blatant self adulation. It worked. It's a long commute (60 mins each way) but it's really good money.
The commute is worth it because I've been traveling non stop with my current company. 7 months out of the last year have been on the road. It's ridiculous.
Distance. I miss the wife and kid big time. The constant travel probably wouldn't bother me too much, but if you have a wife or kids it would be annoying. Is the 1 hour due to traffic or just distance? Also congratulations on the new job.

How long have background checks taken for you guys? Today is a week from when I interviewed, and they put in the background check last week. Today will be day 5 if we're not counting weekends. I sure hope I hear something back soon, it's starting to scare me and hoping they're not finding something abnormal or anything like that.
I once had a check take nearly a month. I've lived in 3 different states in the last few years, and apparently one of the states was slow to return data back. Given the delay, they let me start before it had finished, but they made it clear it no results came back within two weeks I would be terminated (even though it was out of everyone's control).
Crappy part is, that all was for a 6 month position, and my contract just ran out about a month ago. Back to looking for another job.... ugh.
Wishing they let me do that, lol! So it turned out to be a temporary position? That sucks :\
Yep. Unfortunately in the IT industry (including programmers like myself) temporary positions/3-6 month contracts are becoming more common. It's sad.
Been jumping around between jobs way too much. All I want to do is find a good position where I can stay for a few years. Seems like an impossible task in this day and age.
Good luck. Where is this place?UPDATE:
So, I talked to the manager today and he said that the background check came back and everything's good. However, the drug test can't be found at the lab. Go figure. Of course it couldn't be a smooth ride! So he had me email him a copy of the paper they gave me when I went to go get the drug test done, so I think he can send it to the lab and have them search for it. I imagine it's gotta be there somewhere?? I can't see the place I went to keeping it for any reason and that I don't see FedEx messing this delivery up since it's an overnighted/next day item.
At this point, he wants me to still start next week, however with this drug test we will see what happens. Hope they can find it and just test it and let him know. If worse comes to worse I guess I have to re-take it and it'll suck because have to wait for it to get sent off again and then they might be closed for the holidays since Christmas is coming up in two weeks.
