His introductory email sounds like it was written by a 16 year old, minus the OMG, ROFL, ect.

Well, it is "sickly sweet."

"sickly sweet." might not be palatable to some folks, however it doesn't signal the decline of a apple retail store. It's just him out to make a good first impression. Know what I mean? He is only human and is stepping into a fairly large role. Maybe he really is that excited? Only time will tell how well he will fill these shoes. agreed ?

Dixons has always been mediocre. It has quite a mix of products, some poor quality, generally over priced. Dixons can be relied on to not have what you might be looking for.

Given how small the electronics department of John Lewis is, I find I'm more likely to find what I want, and usually for a more competitive price.

I too have grave concerns about anyone from Dixons being involved with the future of the Apple Retail Stores.

I'm more alarmed by the obvious "Apple group think" style of the email, right down to the consistent buzzword use. It was clearly drafted by a marketing team.

This is what I worry about more than anything, regarding Apple. Are they going to become a company driven by marketing and accounting, instead of engineering? Tim Cook is a bean counter after all. Who is the top product guy in charge? Ive? Forstall?

I get a strong sense that there could be trouble for Apple ahead with the current leadership.

Thanks you for your rant. I'll take Tim Cook's judgement over yours any day.

It would be advisable for the non-British members of the forum to listen to what the UK members have to say about Dixons, Currys, and PC World.

I find it baffling that Americans especially, renowned for their demand for nothing but the best, are accepting second best with this guy. We're not critical of Browett to be 'fashionable', it's because we KNOW his work first hand and have been conned, ripped off, and left feeling utterly scunnered by these stores run under HIS stewardship.

Would concur with my UK posters that John Browett's previous employer Dixons is a terrible electronics store with a low reputation. It's generally staffed by people who know little about the products they are trying to sell you and are more interested in up-selling the extended warranty and payment plans. To be fair, big high street presence but bad reputation and happy to sell you something totally in-apprropraiate if there was a bigger sales commission involved.

Sounds like Best Buy!

The biggest issue here is the $60M!

No wonder the Occupy movement had so much resonance. Is no one else scandalized by this kind of money to one person while the economy is so screwed?

Maybe if he had the idea and designed the Apple store concept, he would be worth that much. How tough is his job compared to the other employees and assembly line workers?

But, yeah, where do I sign up to get my salary in stock options and pay 15% taxes, minus deductions?

If you were worth that much you wouldn't have to ask how to get it.

And if the rest of us knew, we wouldn't be here telling you!

It's a little closer to Fry's.

Actually, a lot closer to Fry's.

Hmm, there aren't really any Fry's on the east coast, but I've heard generally good things about them. Best Buy on other hands seems to be just as the UK people described Dixons, poor customer service and bad management...

Fry's isn't much better for customer service.

The reason I say it's a little more like Fry's and a little less like Best Buy comes down to two things: Fry's employees work on commission (I'm almost certain they don't at Best Buy) and Fry's sells little outside of electronics (while Best Buy carries treadmills, washing machines, etc), though looking at Dixon's website it appears they sell things like vacuum cleaners and washing machines, too.

I understand that, being in the UK, you have firsthand knowledge of the businesses this guy has worked for. It's not like we're arguing against that. We're just saying to give the guy a chance. I doubt that he was singlehandedly responsible for everything that happened in those stores. Were there pressures put on him by others that made things go the way they did? I have no doubt that Dixons etc. really sucked. I do doubt that Apple would hire someone that was bringing imminent doom to all its retail stores. I'm willing to wait and see...maybe we'll get to find out what it is that Apple sees in him.

I would love to give Browett the benefit of the doubt, and you can say that he simply did an excellent job at Dixons carrying out the wishes of the board by making Dixons what it is...

OTOH, one must feel that Browett's experience as we can tell is not the type of experience one would like to be judged by as the head of Apple Retail, is it...

Let's hope Browett simply can pickup where Johnson left off...

This is Apple, not Dixons.
He'll be fine. Apple Retail will continue to be fine.

Maybe he'll change the whole Apple Retail experience and actually hire COMPONENT, PASSIONATE workers and not hire all their new and future managers straight from Gap, Starbucks, Old Navy, etc.

John Browett was in charge of the #1 WORST RETAILER IN THE ENTIRE UK.

Dixons has more customer service complaints than almost any other company in the UK. Even mentioning the word Dixons gets people rolling their eyes and shaking their heads "no" in the UK. Nobody respects Dixons, because everyone has been burned by Dixons.

So WHAT IN THE WORLD can this guy POSSIBLY do for Apple, except COMPLETELY DESTROY what was once an incredible retailing experience created by Ron Johnson?

John Browett understands Apple & excellent customer service about as much as I understand flying a rocketship to the moon.

And for Tim Cook to hire this guy is just inexcusable. John Browett should not be allowed to even put one finger on the Apple brand. He is poison. Someone has got to get rid of this guy before he destroys everything.

About as much as CFO from Continental United knows about sales.

So you're claiming that you are more knowledgable on the right person for this role and Browett's suitability for it than Tim Cook, the other Apple executives and the headhunter recruitment agency all put together? You think that they missed something that you've seen? You think they didn't check him out in a way that you've managed to? You think you know best?
