I tried JW Blue for the first time in Vegas a few months ago. My captain is a big fan of it and tried a sip of his. Just bringing the glass up towards my mouth filled my nose with the smokiness and I could tell this was going to be a stout drink. I was never one to drink any type of liquor straight so this was hard for me to enjoy. It was good, but it's just not for me.

As a Scot, can I say one thing, please? It's whisky - no e! If it has an e, it is not from Scotland :)

This is true. I'm Irish, and so, one reads of "Irish Whiskey' and Scotch, i.e. whisky from Scotland.....

Not that I have any problems with any of the splendid single malts produced in Scotland - some of them are sublime.....

I'm quite partial to the odd Jamesons, it must be said :)

I used to like Jameson more than Tullamore Dew (and Kilbeggen), but Bushmills is probably better, particularly Black Bush.

Around Xmas time, when I was visiting my family, I saw and purchased an Irish whiskey called Connemara, which is a peated Irish whiskey. It was pretty good compared to the regulars, but Irish whiskey has a very defining taste that I'm now trying to stay away from!!

And just FYI, I'm currently drinking a Highland Park 1998 vintage. I started with a Woodford Reserve, and switched to this. I bought both at the airport recently!

Mmm Woodford Reserve is great. I've heard good things about Bushmills and it was right next to Tullamore at the store. Debated buying it - I'll look into it next time.

TS, if it tasted like Jack you either got tricked or you have to refine your taste buds. I remember when I used to go to boating parties when we reached it in the afternoon after a good morning of trolling (fishing) the Grey Goose was gone and my friend filled the bottle w/ Absolut no one ever said anything.

Why, when you can get the best part of that blend cheaper with The Glenlivet??
Umm didn't know it was cheaper? I remember it was pricier, maybe I will grab a bottle next time, but I do like the light smokiness of Chivas something I didn't feel when I tried Glenlivet a while back. I have tried and drank a good quantity of whiskys, but I tend to always come back to Chivas.

Currently hooked on Makers Mark "46", Devine! when I want the best, "Blantons"

Blantons is incredible! The "Special Reserve", which is both cheaper and better than the Original version, is my favourite bourbon, and one of my 2 daily whiskies (i.e. good, yet affordable). The other is Monkey Shoulder, a blended scotch.

Another good budget bourbon is Bulleit, but I usually just pay the extra $7 and get the Blantons Special Reserve. ;)

I also like Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare, which are from the same company as Blanton's, but Blanton's is still cheaper, and slightly better, IMO. And the Blantons bottle is beautiful! It is something that people have asked me for after I finish the bottle.

Mmm Woodford Reserve is great.

It is quite easy to drink, but partly because it's a bit like honey. It's not very sweet, but more than most bourbons.

^^ Wild Turkey has one that's pretty smooth as well. I was surprised.

The OP's JW Blue, if legit, is a perfectly good bottle of scotch.

Perfectly good, lol. Johnny Walker is renowned for its poor quality in many scotch circles. It's overpriced and overrated - it's just heavily marketed. Blended scotch? Are you for real? Although judging by your tone somehow I can believe it appeals to you.

Edit: I should add: I am single purist; maybe that explains my viewpoint.

I wouldn't drink it if you don't like it, share it with guests/friends who're into it.

Personally I've never been keen on blends, I like Islay single malts best, ardbeg, laphoraig and bruichladdich mostly.

I had some 16 year old bruichladdich recently that was just fantastic :)

Jamesons is quite nice (and was my mother's preference for quite a while), but, I'm in agreement with iJohn in his post below; if you wish to try a really good Irish whiskey, Black Bush from the Bushmills stable is very hard to beat.

If you'll check the Bushmill's site, you will find that Black Bush is aged in "expired" sherry casks from Spain.

The colour and flavour are, IMO, unparallelled.

Agree completely.

Recently, I've seen some amazingly aged (and eye-wateringly expensive) special reserve whiskeys on sale from these guys. If one ever falls my way, I'll let you know what it is like.

Some years ago, on a foodie and wine/whiskey historical tour of Dublin, I came across a whiskey with the somewhat intriguing name of "Green Spot' (and its label also sported a large green spot).

Historically, it is very interesting, as it is the last whiskey in Ireland which still bottled on the premises by the vendor, (as was the old practice) having been imported first in casks. Actually, "Green Spot" itself, while quite impressive, is not the company's premium brand, as there used to be a "Red Spot" and a "Gold Spot" apparently, which are now mere foot-notes in history of food books, but were once - I am reliably informed - revered by the whiskey sampling cognoscenti.

However, as it is so rare (and quite difficult to obtain as very few specialist places stock it), I frequently bring bottles as gifts for whiskey-liking friends when travelling abroad.

Wow, ok. Thanks for your condescending input. Some people like what they like. I enjoy JW Blue, but I enjoy a single 27 year scotch much more. You must have missed that part of my post. But rest assured, you are far superior to us mere mortals in the world of scotch judgement. Good on you sir. Good thing you added an addendum, otherwise I never would have pegged your for an elitist snob.

I'd just finished a fantastic bottle of Aberlour A'bunadh (a 59.7% cask strength single malt I'd had for 3-4 years) and passing through Tokyo airport decided to find a replacement.

As a special birthday treat, thought I'd get a bottle of JW Blue Label and have to say I wish I'd bought another A'bunadh! It's not a bad whisky, but seriously over priced and bettered by much cheaper single malts.

Wouldn't turn my nose up at a free bottle though :D

Ok, so I just purchased a bottle of this Blue Label Whiskey from a friend. He wasn't able to keep his collection of drinks because he is moving back to the USA and, well, it is kind of not worth bring 30+ bottles onto the the cargo of a airplane. Nor is it possible to drink all 30+ bottles in a matter of days. (Or is it? haha)

But my question is...
I had this bottle just sitting in my home for a few weeks and last night I decided, what the hell lets try it. And I took maybe 2 or three little cups of this whiskey... and well, I dont think its real.....

First, I have had Jack Daniels and Jim Beam before, during my college years. And it has been a few years since I have have any type of drink other than beer. So I am not exactly the drink connoisseur. But last night, when I was drinking this "Johnny Walker Blue Label" it burned and tasted just like Jack Daniels... which is rather gross to me. (Im the kind of guy who loves an ICE cold beer, and maybe a tequila. Hate vodka, hate gin....)

This Blue Label is supposed to be a high quality whiskey that is rather expensive no?
Is the price difference MUCH bigger than the difference in taste (between Blue Label and Jack Daniels)?

Has anyone had this whiskey before? Im really confused, perhaps I dont have the "taste level" of these types of drinks or something, but I seriously think this is no better than Jack Daniels...

Is this bottle real?
Buy the way this isn't a whiskey it's a Scotch which you have to like the taste since you don't try bookers 126 proof great stuff hal van horn

----------

Makers Mark is good all of them try Bookers by jim beam johnny walker gold is real good and smooth
