SNL's version was a perfect spoof of the movie.

If you freeze the frame you'll see the "brought to you by the letter R" joke:

Ledger impressed the heck out of me. Best Joker to date, he lifted that movie to it’s heights.

Ledger made an outstanding Joker... The movie was good, not great, but his performance was what set the bar for that movie. I liked Joker better as a movie, and I really liked this version of the joker. To me they are on par with each other as being the best Jokers to date, but for different reasons.

I have not seen Joker... yet.

I have to admit, the opinion I expressed in my original post was dead wrong. I’m still not a big fan of the makeup, but the movie was fantastic. People are going to be discussing it for a long time.

Coincidentally I’ve been seeing a lot of articles about Jared Leto’s Joker in my news feeds. I know he’s been whining about the attention given to Joaquin Phoenix, but some of the stories have been dumping on Leto’s performance in “Suicide Squad” way too hard. Personally I liked it. The tatted look did not appeal to everyone, but his character struck me as creepy, unpredictable and, in a way, reptilian.
