That’s a very long time. Dang, didn’t think of it that way. But Atleast they got rid of it. But Samsung has been doing the hole punch long time ago
Damn. About time they get rid of the notch! It took the longer than I expected, TBH. iPhone X came out in 2017, so 5 years…
I actually don’t agree at all. The moment I saw the iPhone 12 notch was the same size during the announcements, I winced a little knowing people would criticize how long it’s been despite the bezels getting nicely thinner.
The truth is the current design still just works. Designers were quite curious when iPhone X released just how often Apple would refine the Face ID camera design. Some even said they could coast another 10 years on this same exact profile for an iPhone display.
Others were more doubtful and guessed that Apple internally ideally doesn’t want that notch there, but found it necessary for the meantime so we can all enjoy larger and curvier displays. That argument won out for the iPhone X final design.
It’s easy to see how the hardware team felt the clock ticking immediately the moment iPhone X was announced to begin furious work to solve these types of design problems. Technology takes time and patience, and most designers estimated more around 5 years before we’d see a significant change.
We are also only on year #4 of the notch still, because the iPhone 13 will be the 5th generation since the iPhone X. Rumors appear to point towards a more shrunken notch area on iPhone 13
and probably also future cheaper iPhones, with an under-display Face ID sensor array and selfie camera punch hole the following year on iPhone 14 (potentially just for the Pro or additional higher-end models).
This appears to make sense that if their goal was closer to 5 years, we’re being treated instead with a stop-gap smaller notch, while the technology and huge scale the iPhone requires to produce under-display Face ID catches up, likely thanks to covid and manufacturing delays.
