I'm pretty much unsurprised by this. The technology available on that phone was pretty much the most advanced and it took a long while for the competition to catch up.

Are you serious. Really? There are no words...

Yup, its the design that sells the iPhone, nothing about how it works, or its ecosystem makes it happen.

To the people that enjoy tech or frequent these forums, those things matter. The majority of people you see with iPhones have NO idea how to use a smartphone properly. They've just been exposed to the (once upon a time) genius marketing and the prettiness of it. The SGIII, in terms of OS and design, destroys the 4s, 4, 3, ect. The next phone needs to revamp some things to be considered the best in term of design and OS.

I could not agree more.

We are going to find out just how gullible the buyers are, when this "new" model is introduced.

Yet even worse, so will Apple. If they sell like I expect they will in massive quantities setting even more sales records, that will validate Apple's choice to foist off this old design, over and over and over again.

I guess you really can't argue with a someone that buys products because of how new they look instead of how they function and make their lives better.

And we would have been stuck with this:

Before posting that picture, people should really be aware that was only 1 Android prototype, at the same time there were Android prototypes that were largely similar to how they are now, Android was intended for a variety of form factors.

It will bolster Apple's ability to continue on the path of dictatorship, profit taking, and trickling out a few new features at each release. Then counting up every little change so they can make a dramatic claim like "200 new features"...

Ba hahahahahahahahahahaha!!

One does not simply invest countless time and effort into creating(and then perfecting), the antenna band, only to dump it, so quickly.

What is with mobile, That folks demand a radical change in both hardware and software every year or so?

I agree. The iPhone is great. All I want is minor refinements to make it even better (like improving Siri). I don't want radical change. If I wanted that, I would get an Android, which would be a real change.

Eh, I deal with dozens of phones at work everyday, I've never had a droid device that felt like it was well built, which is unfortunate because they are getting quite good in usability. Stability issues are unfortunate because there are simply too many variables at play :(

Do teach us how to use a smartphone, please.

And please, stop calling SG III as a phone with a great design - a plastic body with fake silver lining ? You can't be serious. The One X, I can accept, But SG III ?

"Stretched 4S" design

I don't know why everybody is so obsessed with an "all new design" for the iPhone. It is not simply a stretched 4S, this is an entirely new iPhone. All the current leaks suggest metal unibody construction, a 16:9 "retina" screen, a new docking system, relocated headphone jack, and improved speakers/mics. Other likely additions are in-cell touch panel technology, improved processor, larger battery, 4G LTE connectivity, improved camera, and possibly NFC capability. Put all this together and you're going to get a stronger, thinner, faster iPhone with a larger screen (that is still useable with one hand!). What more do you want? If Apple rounded the edges of this phone everybody would be amazed. We already had an iPhone with rounded edges 5 years ago. It's time to let it go. The iphone 4 and 4S (despite the same complaints last year) have sold incredibly well, and people love them. Once you've found a good design you stick with it until change is necessary/beneficial. Apple is not going to dump a good thing every year because Samsung or HTC etc can mold their plastic phones into an infinite number of shapes. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

That post is dated 2008 and the article specifically states this is what apple is up against with iPhone v2

Just kinda confused here...

Every person has a different use for a smartphone, that doesn't make them any less smart in their decision. I do admit that the Android OS has come further along than iOS in terms of new tech, but that is only because Apple wants to make sure they don't send out half-baked apps (Siri was a mistake though). I've had TWO iPhones, the original (which my daughter still uses) and the 4. And while I would like a larger screen, it is not the reason I continue to give my money to Apple. iOS is hands down more stable than anything Google has brought to the table. I don't claim to know a thing about Android phones, but I have friends that have them and are sorry they do. And by the way, I'll bet the majority of Android owners were attracted to the "pretty" screens, the ones that need the larger batteries (Droid Razor Maxx) just to give their smartphone enough juice to last the day.

I was more or less talking about the design of the OS and software within the 3, but the body is still up to par. As it sits, it's better. When it gets the JB update, it will sit on the throne unless Apple does something big with the iOS. Let me state that I'm a huge fan of the iOS. It's smooth, fast, and pretty. However, I've had the chance to fool around with JB and it's superior in just about everyway.

What I meant by using a smartphone was knowing how and using the 'ecosystem,' ect. Most tween iphone users you come across text, call, and play words with friends.

iOS is hands down more stable than anything Google has brought to the table.

While I see and understand your argument, that is not true IMO. Check out JellyBean and see if you still think the same.

Didn't these phones have a keyboard (underneath)?

This device single handedly replaced four devices I carried around daily.

1) Motorola V557 phone
2) Palm, TX I think it was called
3) iPod
4) point and shoot camera

My pants pockets were very happy!

I remember those days too. One time I was flying and the security people were going through my carry-on bags: my cell phone, digital camera, PDA, iPod... I felt like a walking Best Buy.

They'd been talking about "convergence" for years but I never figured it would catch on. We'd seen products that sort-of fit that bill. The Palm Treo was a PDA that was also a cell phone. And my little Nokia phone had a tiny, crappy camera and was technically capable of playing mp3's. Sort of. The iPod of the day could play videos, sort of. The digital camera I had could take short, grainy video clips.

There are still compromises today but it's getting much closer.

"Make their lives better" you've got to be kidding... it's only a phone.

A multi use phone when we are in the midst of a massive technical revolution. To anyone that isn't a geek, having a device that makes the transition as painless is possible certainly qualifies as "making your life better" from the context of a consumer culture.

Hell, beepers used to make lives better!

Wrong link, I was on my phone.

I've amended the link above.

I know the video is dated 2007, however remember it was a prototype found earlier, this was the public announcement. See both Prototype phones listed in the same video.
