FFS, irrespective of whether anybody copied anybody else, and who came up with the idea first, if you seriously believe that ONLY apple were capable of coming up with a phone design without a keyboard, and that phones would still be like the one in your picture if Apple hadn't shaken up the market, then you are a fool.

If apple had never entered the phone market then yes, the landscape would be different, but realistically most smartphones would be not entirely unlike they are now.

Yes and if Christopher Columbus never found America, it would still be unknown.

Calm down dude, my point was that the iPhone radically changed phone design very quickly.

Why does every thread have to turn into a G-D pissing match about who invented what first or if company A is more innovative than company B or company C's designs look like company A's, except for company C had prototypes prior to company A which means they didn't copy company A. What does the topic of this thread have to do with any of that garbage?

"We nearly shelved the phone because we thought there were fundamental problems that we can't solve. With the early prototypes, I held the phone to my ear and my ear [would] dial the number," he said. "You have to detect all sorts of ear-shapes and chin shapes, skin colour and hairdo...that was one of just many examples where we really thought, perhaps this isn't going to work."

Sorry to say, for me at least, they never fixed this problem. My ear is always activating the speakerphone on and off with my iphone 4 when in use.

Small minds.

LOL - Columbus didn't discover America - that's some old FUD right there!

I could not agree more.

We are going to find out just how gullible the buyers are, when this "new" model is introduced.

Yet even worse, so will Apple. If they sell like I expect they will in massive quantities setting even more sales records, that will validate Apple's choice to foist off this old design, over and over and over again.

It will bolster Apple's ability to continue on the path of dictatorship, profit taking, and trickling out a few new features at each release. Then counting up every little change so they can make a dramatic claim like "200 new features"...

I agreed with this old design boo hoo crap so I got myself a S3 just to feel different. Boy did they get it wrong, being different doesnt always mean better. What do you people want them to change in the iPhones design, change the glass to thin flimsy plastic? Cause thats exactly what the back cover of the S3 is like. If you get a chance, go check it out, it needs to be seen to be believed. For some this doesnt matter for others this REALLY matter because it just feels cheap, and the S3 ain't no slouch, its possibly one of the top and most expensive android phones you can get.

So I ask, what DESIGN change do you people want? The day Apple just start changing stuff just because you ppl want it to change will be the end of Apple.

There's this guy J. Ive. Ever heard of him?

A world class designer, he's capable of much more than two slabs of flat shapeless glass. The current "style" is about as bland as they come. Anyone can cut out two rectangular slabs, round the corners and slap them together.

Did you ever see the iPhone 3GS? It had compound curves, was very nice to hold, since the back fit the palm of ones hands quite nicely, and that was years ago.

There's no question in my mind that Ive could design a shapely ergonomically comfortable phone, that would look very nice. It would be much more reflective of Apple style, than this industrial thing they call and iPhone 4, 4S, and by all indications the next upcoming phone.

Three long years with the same old style. If it had some cache, that would be one thing, but the overly simple, dull shape, is a very poor excuse for a premium company like Apple.

If this were a competitor, the Apple believers would be all over it with criticism.

Simply a guess...but based on the stability of smartphones available 5 years ago...RIM would probably be top dog. In this date / time thats insane, due to them failing to stay with the times...but in '06 and '07 they were the most stable smartphone OS outside of IOS, despite is limitations.

I have never had any blackberry that has been anything but terrible.

The build quality and reliability of these damn things is just shocking.

Perhaps I just had bad luck with the ones that were supplied to me for work but now I say to any employer I'll take any phone as long as it's not a blackberry.

I'm happy with the look of the current iPhone 4/4S. I don't want some two-tone elongated looking thing. A stretched iPhone4 is just nasty.

Had it not been for Apple, Samsung would still be the underdog mobile phone provider with Nokia, HTC, and RIM dominating the marketplace.

I think it'd be all Blackberry and maybe even some Windows Mobile (the one prior to Windows Phone, remember that? It looked like Windows 95 on a small screen...)

It's hard to say though, prior to the iPhone there was a serious lull in innovation. I remember getting a new Nokia Symbian phone in 2007 and thinking, wow, this looks almost exactly like the Nokia I got 5 years ago - nothing had changed.

One thing I am sure about is that there would not be any keyboard / keypad - less phones. That's the thing that Apple most certainly innovated. People say there were others before but they always fail to mention that these others 1) sucked and 2) were commercial failures as they were near-unusable.

The face sensor is a good example on why all-screen touch phones did not work prior to the iPhone. Of course once the issue has been solved, it's easy to copy the design.

I don't agree with you there. A lot of the writing was on the wall, and these things had changed progressively in the past. We weren't all stuck with monochromatic displays, yet phones and pda devices used these in prior years. Much of it comes down to component cost. LCD screens are expensive especially when coupled with certain features. As this became less of an issue, you started to see more prototypes employing larger displays. No company is going to release such a thing if it costs too much to make. Most of the time this results in the tech sites saying it's nice but that it costs too much. In the case of Apple, they have established an expectation that it will be expensive, so you're going into it already counting on that. If you're still reading, you've accepted it. This goes for the iphone too. It's just that the service provider fronts a lot of the costs.

And we would have been stuck with this:

You assume that it would have remained this way forever. Even the first iphone was actually annoying to text or type on, and a couple years prior to that, quality lcd displays were still quite expensive.

The problem with the lineups posted is that they never provide a complete overview. They select out the models that make their case. In the case of Apple's lawyers, rather than suggest that represents the majority of what was sold, they wish to pretend that nothing else existed.

A lot of companies do this. It's a huge success and they want to milk it as long as possible. I don't personally think most people gain much from annual bumps.

Sounds like an apologist response.

It's Apple, that brags about world class design and how important it is to their products. It's very obvious when you look at what they build. Design does matter, especially to your average consumer that has no clue about the rest.

There's a well respected, very true saying in the world of sales: "customers buy with their eyes".

All one has to do is read this forum and all the raving that goes on about how "cool" Apple products look. All the agonizing over "do I buy white or black? " And on and on it goes.

This is always an issue. I've never cared very much how a device looks, yet it's taken into consideration for those that do care.

I've always loved that image used in this article. I remember seeing it on Apple's main page and being completely blown away.

Yeah i heard of him, he designed the iPhone you're all complaining about. Maybe I should send him a memo to not get things so perfect cause in design, when something is right, its hard to change it without breaking what wasn't broken. This phone still needs to function, as mentioned I'm trying to endure the S3 until the next iPhone come out, so far the bigger screen is causing issues where the palm muscle is constantly triggering bottom left button, in this case the phone. I never had this problem on the iPhone because I never needed to reach so far over.

I use my index finger to push the power button to lock it and the volume buttons on the opposite ends start getting clicked from the grasp then mutes the phone unintentionally.

the surrounding steel frame is functional, its not just there to avoid curves. Design should be beautiful but design should also be functional. Great design should also be unnoticed, something the S3 proves is very difficult to achieve because I sure as hell notice a lot of things on it.

Sounds like the S3 was an impulse purchase. There is no perfect phone for everyone.

I'm a web developer so I thought it'd be good to have a top end Android phone around for testing purposes. I still have the 4S in my bag when I need. Today is friday so i popped a beer and popped the sim card out of the S3 and going to enjoy the evening with my boring iPhone that just works.

There's nothing like choices, that's why I have two lines :)

My iPhone 4S works as well.

It's just that my SGS 3 does more than just work, it's a rocket.

Fast, Fun, and Ever So Reliable, Thanks to Samsung & Google :D

I would love it of my S3 can function normally. So far I can't even get my mail folders from exchange server.
