Maybe I don't know how to appreciate good design but if I didn't know about Ive's involvement, I would think it's just a normal desk. I mean come on, does it really look like 'One-of-a-kind' desk to you?

i own one of these in bright orange plastic (Currently in the shed covered in old paint and boxes as its too hideous to have in the house), it was owned before me by grandparents and was i have been told by my mother bought in the 60s for her to use as a dressing table, its exactly this, a single piece of molded plastic in that exact shape

not "designed" by Johnny Ive at all, he just stuck his name on an existing design thats been around for years and apple had it made in aluminium.

maybe there really is nothing new left, its all just remakes of things from 50 years ago recycled over and over again in new materials ?

hopefully someone will pay $10million+ for it for charity though

Yes, but… WTBF?

What the blinkin' flip is this (and the Dr Who item) doing in the Mac Blog? I did read both just in case MacRumo(u)rs had managed to shoe-horn in a bit about Macs, but to no avail. Not even "You could put a Mac on a desk like this", or one "Dr Who wore a mac*, in one episode, once."

Allegedly "The Mac Blog covers Mac news, software, tips, gear." It could be 'gear', it could be Sir Ive of Cupertino, or it could be that the Mac Blog is the repository for all half-ar$ed rumour snippets.

Maybe Arn should think about a Carp Blog for all such stuff (and any fish news too).

*mac = raincoat*
*rain = wet stuff that falls out of clouds* (for those in California)
*clouds = Little Fluffy things (according to The Orb - not the four legged YouTube superstars)

I hate to see a lot of people giving Jony and Marc such a hard time for their "off the clock" design interests.

I think all of the (RED) items that have been turning up are very fun, nuanced and very well executed. It is enjoyable to see the products of any creative mind. Even more enjoyable is seeing well executed artistic objects.

I bet this table is flawlessly crafted. The design suits my taste but thats not why these guys are doing this. I really get tired of people who post "OMG dats hideous". If that is your first (or only) response to someone's design work then i guess these items are not something you would appreciate.

In another vein, it is good to see that these guys are getting some time to do some design work that is out of the ordinary for what they do 9-5 so to speak. I bet they had a lot of fun. I can so relate to the need to make something random from time to time. It can really serve to refresh the creative juices of _everything_ else that you work on. I could imagine only working on iDevices and Macs. There is really only so much fussing you can do over a phone design before you get burned out.

I guess Product (RED) items don't need to have any particular hue anymore, at least not when it's a one off:

- Golden Earpods
- Aluminum Camera
- Aluminum Table

The Mac Blog is actually just page 2 with a new name that doesn't actually reflect the things that go in it anymore. It used to be all the stuff that is Apple related in some way, but most people won't care about.

IE, this table is related to Apple because Ive made it, and he works at Apple. Most people that are wondering what Apple is up to these days who are just passing by probably won't care about this, so it doesn't go on the front page. It goes on page 2. Which has been renamed Mac Blog. Perfect logic.

Mac Apps that are great for IT personnel who need to know when any of hundreds of wireless devices might need to have their batteries changed? Not covered anywhere in the Mac Blog (except in the comments, of course.)

Cue the "I wonder if it will scratched when they take it out of the box" comments ;)

Ah, thank you AOW.

So it's not a Mac Blog, it's an Apple Blog. So… logically it should be called… oh, hang on… ah, yes 'Apple Blog'.

I wonder how many these (Red) things he's designing? First the solid gold earbuds, then the Leica camera and now this table. What's next? A solid gold Haswell 17" rMBP?

None. The auction is in November.

I already posted on appleinsider...as much I love Apple, this time Ive and Newson they just copied a desk and made in aluminum.

The desk is called Shift designed from Norman Foster for Tecno in 2011.

I like how people keep talking about these being. (RED) but not colored red. Apple sold them in the color red because they were selling multiple colored devices and it's obvious that they would specifically devote a red colored one for that charity. Durrrrrrr

Lol first of all while that is very close it is not the same design. Secondly I seriously doubt they 'copied', sorry but there are only so many ways to design a simplistic desk.

Are you joking? It's almost exactly the same.

Just like there are so many ways you can design a tablet i.e. rectangle with rounded edges...didn't stop Apple suing Samsung.

It takes a CEO with great taste to install a designer with great taste. Ive is not rare, Steve was.

Without a CEO like Steve you end up with design by committees doing their best to design what they're told consumers want. It's an awful bunch of puck chasers producing mediocre crap.

Contrary to popular belief, Johny Ive is entirely replaceable. The problem is that there may be no one at Apple (besides Ive himself) with the authority and good taste to know who that person is. I just hope that Ive has the balls to select a successor more talented than himself when the time comes.

Nice thing about aluminum is that it's a good conductor of heat. Meaning that this desk will always feel slightly cold to the touch in a typical room.

Why isn't it curved around the user? With straight desks you have to reach farther for the mouse. It's not ergonomic at all.

In all this desk is a triumph of design over functionality. Just like iOS 7.

The desk looks like a lot of Jony's other stuff, kind of cool looking but less than useful. By that I mean the kind of cool looking but less than fully-functional Mac mini, MacBook Pro Retina, iMac 21.5", iMac 24" and new Mac Pro.

Apple should get back to designing truly useful computer rather than Jony Ive wet dreams.

Why don't you go on up to heaven and talk to Steve about that. You know the Steve who removed the floppy drive from the original iMac (and insisted on a slot loading DVD drive) and championed the Cube. If you think Steve wouldn't have supported everything Apple has released you're delusional. In fact most of this stuff was probably in the planning stages while he was still alive.

I thought this was an ironing board at first glance. Absolutely ugly.
