This was hard to watch. Why would anyone sponsor such a gratuitous display of mental masturbation and this self aggrandizing circlejerk.

I'm both curious and skeptical. It seems like everyone here hates current tech, especially Apple's, and if anyone can make something different, it's the design team Ive has assembled (Tang, Hankey, etc)—not just him. However, why do they keep having these conversations when they're still two years out?! It's insane!

Can people stop being so negative about a device we know absolutely nothing about, besides the fact that it's meant to be a less intrusive form of technology? It's not because the Humane AI device was terrible that this should have the same fate. I'd say Ive and Altman are another calibre of people. But it's good for people to try new things, we should be excited to see what's coming, or at least be neutral for now.

Spot-on. So many tech forum pundits lacking even a wee bit of curiosity jump to the device being a guaranteed flop knowing absolutely nothing about what the device is and what it's capable of doing.

And probably don't understand why little/no information is being released at this point in time by Altman and Ive. Hint: How much information about the first Mac was released by Jobs before he introduced it back in 1984?

  • Research started with a question about what it means that the device "is going to be able to know everything you've ever thought about, read, said?"
  • Ive and Altman's device aims to bring some of the spirit of "sitting in the most beautiful cabin by a lake and in the mountains and just sort of enjoying the peace and calm."
Yes. I go to a cabin by a lake so that it can listen to me, watch me, read my thoughts, and send all that to OpenAI. This is not creepy at all. Take my money.

Altman paid billions for a no-shipping-product company that Ive and Laurene Powell Jobs invested in. Of course they are arm flap to make it all sound good. Should not look at this collection of folks on the stage as if there was any shred of independent objective thought here (the conference organizer is looped eyeball deep in this personal payoff scheme too).

Everyone can spout a set of words in a pleasing order. Heck, there are free services that do this very well. If they were REALLY on the cusp of releasing something world changing, they’d be quiet about it (because saying anything gives competition ideas) and then just release it.

But, that’s what you do when you have confidence in your design and your vision. This is just “Hey, what we’re doing… man, you are SO going to love what we’re doing. Just you wait.” Then, they release oh, I don’t know, something like a Segway. :)

Yep.

It's called "hyperstition" and it's quite frankly at this point it's a mental illness among billionaires. Literally by believing something and talking about it, you can make it manifest. It does not matter about the practicalities and finances of making it reality. Failure is not a possibility.

Unfortunately the only reality that actually exists is seeing our financial markets move from tangible achievements and returns onto promises and hype which are unlikely to be delivered and if they are delivered, don't have a return on investment at all.

Everything is thus completely ****ed and we're hurtling towards a gigantic cliff.

And they're talking about making a talking pet rock that no one wants or needs with all our savings, investments, hopes and dreams.

Especially at an time when Apple's only new product in 10 years (VP) is one of the most niche device they ever made, and is the opposite of what people want (or should have) in their life. Pretty much the opposite of what the Apple Watch tried to do. And Meta Glasses are not for everyone. I paid 3000€ for eye surgery, I'm not putting glasses back on my nose. So I look forward to different form factors.

No I can't stop being negative about it.

Products do not exist until they are on the market and people are buying them.

After that you might recoup your R&D on sales.

Eventually you make profit.

At the moment there is no product. There is only the idea of a product. Ideas are cheaper to sell. They drive market speculation, investment and shift of wealth in an attempt to capitalise on interest. The product now is not Jony Ive's talking rock but the idea of Jony Ive's talking rock. And that is what they are selling here - the idea. Jony Ive is so utterly detached from reality that he probably doesn't even know what is possible and he's surrounded by yes men who tell him it's possible. Everyone saying yes gets their slice of the investment capital poured in.

Unfortunately that wealth is transferred away from us all. Your pensions, investments are all backed on funds which are pouring money into the ideas market. I work in that sector for ref. When the product doesn't materialise or fails, YOU WILL COVER THE LOSSES.

So yes I'm going to be negative. And justifiably so.

Im not really sure but this might be a flop.

- If no screen then its limited usefulness - Especially phones do nearly everything..
- If voice only computing - Siri is meme today - google assistant and amazon echo is not even good and voice UI is awkward for today's standard.
- Privacy concern of course like it records, observes - knows your regular day to day - wtf?
- Is this a new Humane AI pin?
- No clear usefulness (though we don't know it yet of course).

Still i was hoping Jony Ive can pull this off.

But im not hype about this.

They are completely out of touch with what it’s like to be a regular human on this planet. The rich really are different and the super rich are oblivious. Eat them.

This is probably the most sensible post I’ve read on this forum for months.

Nobody wants to watch this 30-minute circle jerk about how groundbreaking the things they're working on at OpenAI, without actually showing anything.

I'm probably going to get a lot of hate from this... I've grown tired of Jony Ive's run-on sentences filled with useless adjectives to describe literally nothing. Lately, it feels like he's scamming people, a $2,000+ Moncler jacket with a few magnetic aluminum buttons or a $5,000 sailing lamp... The jig is up.

So it's basically the Limitless AI microphone clip listens to everything you say and summarises it, but you can also talk to it, and it probably has a camera as well.

Expect it to look a lot like this. In aluminium

I’m looking forward to see what they eventually release. From what they are talking about I think it has an opportunity to be wonderful. Time will tell… 👍🏻
