I think you are all missing the point. These are likely never going to leave the auction-winner's safe until 1-3 months after Jony passes away, at which point they'll be sold at auction for a minimum of 5x what they were purchased for.

Being made of solid gold would make them quite heavy and likely just fall out of your ears.

For me heavier earphones stay in better as light ones a single light knock of the cable causes them to fly out.

But putting it in your ear a few times will start to make it tarnish and loose value but I guess that's the same as a ring of a necklace.

Especially, what will you do when the cable breaks one day? (as it is the case after some time as always)

I wonder if they really work at all.

no

I think they'll be heavy, but I wouldn't worry about the value decreasing with use. 18k gold is strong and will not tarnish. I wonder if they drivers in them are still made out of paper like the rest of the EarPods, or if the guts are different in these.

I'd like to see pictures of some of the other projects at the auction that Ive has touched.

Is the solid gold soft enough to form to one's ear canal?

More beautiful work by Johnny Ive. I swear if Apple ever loses this guy it's all over.

now we know who the true gold lover is...

watch all the people that hated the champagne iPhone realized it was an Ive idea.... they will be OMG gold greatest thing evar...hipsters...

I'm no big Star Wars buff or anything, but did anybody else think of C3PO when they saw this?

More like Metropolis, the original!

To the world it's 'Man asks earphone manufacturer to make earphones out of gold instead of plastic' ... To Applezoids it's Jonny Ive 'creates' worlds first iconic gold earphones'.

Gotta love Apple Marketing!!!

Help me out ... all he's done is had them made out of gold instead of plastic? Hmm, maybe I should work for Apple ... I'm thinking of designing a gold plated iMac power supply .... They'll be design classics!

That is indeed what it says in the article, and they would definitely be quite heavy, but for the record, being 'rose-gold', it has to be an alloy with copper, possibly 18 karat, meaning 75% gold with 25% copper. That would still make them quite heavy, comparably that is, but as others have noted, I can't see them actually being used for their intended purpose.

Wish I was part of that 'club' to be able to bid on these kinds of items, oh well, back to work we go.

#Gold ear pods…
They're the pods, the pods with the midas touch…

no, wait, I've done this joke before.

What is it with all the gold lately?! I blame Spandau Ballet. Gold is NOT indestructible.

That is a bleak prospect, but Jony is a perfectionist, who loves Apple, partly because it's a company founded by perfectionists. Many companies would love to snap him up, for his proven impeccable track record with design.

But what other company would give him free rein with budget and more importantly, where else would his designs take precedence over engineering. That alone is enough to make him want to stay.

I believe Jony's future with Apple is not about to come to an end.
