Jony Ive Featured on WSJ. Magazine Cover, Talks Work at Apple and Design Philosophy

I was a Jony fan for quite a while, Dieter Rams photocopier notwithstanding, but after Steve died, it seemed like a critical filter had been removed and design choices became less and less focused on the complete user experience and more focused on pumping up brand valuation. A decade later, having burned every possible bridge, I don’t even think there’s a way back.
You are describing Tim Cook's influence lol

But you know that’s how we say it don’t you? In other English speaking countries, like I dunno. England?
What many people miss is that it’s not a different pronunciation but two different spellings: ‘aluminum’, which is the US spelling and has 4syllables and ‘aluminium’, used in many other English-speaking countries and has five syllables.

Sir Jony at the height of his powers.

Some people said it was stupid to have to stop work to charge a Magic Mouse.

I say it gave users an opportunity to take a break and reflect on the beauty of another wonderful Ive design. :D
It’s a sensible idea. Unlike the Bluetooth keyboard, which remains static and thus can be used while charging, the mouse is moved across the desk and therefore causes damage to the cable and port. It makes sense not to have it useable while charging. Why do so many people miss this? (IMHO, of course)

Jony needed Steve. Without him he went overboard and he respected no one like he did Steve. So no one could hope to reel him in.

In my eyes, Iphone 4 & 4s were the most beautiful mobile phones ever made. It was a perfect looking device. I didn't like the way when design changed from 5 onwards. That's the reason I used Droids until 12PM released. HTC M8 and M9 were very beautiful as well.

probably in the vast minority, but "Ive" is the most overrated overhyped person in the last few decades.

his designs are almost always form over function, usually always to the point that the function becomes disrupted.

lets also remember that Ive was at apple during the barren period before it had re-invent itself.
in the re-invented apple he's the classic case of someone having way too much power.
What a load of rubbish.

iPhone, iPad, iPod, Apple Watch. He oversaw the design of Apple Park. MacBook Air. These are his designs. How are any of those Form over Function?

His philosophy of design is also insightful. Just because people don’t 'get it' is more about those people than it is Sir Jonathan Paul Ive.

I don’t know why people have to knock someone for being more intelligent, more insightful and more successful than them.

What bridges did he burn?
Although I failed to articulate my point, what I really meant was that the company as a whole feels mediocre in comparison to the Jobs & Ive epoch. By and large the hardware is still nicely designed and well made, but my user experience is under growing attack from bad software that ruins the product.
Under attack? I’m not sure I understand what you mean. I’m guessing you mean the occasional bug that comes from having super complicated apps. People think they need a perfect product every single time.

Johny had some amazing beautiful designs, but he focused more on designs and not usability. I think he was more focused on his image and what he would be known for (design wise) rather than will this actually playout. Sure some of the I/O wasn't needed on the laptops, but to basically remove them all and keep 2-3 and attach dongles on these beautiful devices should have hurt him.

I think the "trashcan" Mac just got released too early, because I do think that with Apple Silicon the heat problems wouldn't be an issue the only other downside is the upgradeability would have been probably none. The Magic Mouse I just don't understand.. I get that the mouse charges very quickly and lasts a long time, but with how the slope is a charging port could have been added that wouldn't be noticeable at the bottom rather than underneath.

I guess some of these could have been resolved or figured out if he would have collaborated with engineers
I agree with most of your points. I think using dongles would have been like fingernails on a chalk board, but the reality Is that I use about 3 different flash media, and having an SD-Card slot only is stupid. I’d rather have a single dongle where I can plug in what I want.

The Magic Mouse. Looks gorgeous, but just feels weird. I don’t have a problem plugging it in, because I use a thing called a menu bar, and I can see when the charge gets to a level where I will plug it in after I finish using it. But I just couldn’t get used to the way it functioned and the way it felt. Thus I no longer use a mouse and just use the best Track Pad ever made.
Feels like Sir Jony is trying to stay relevant.
He is relevant. He inspires people all if the time. Feels like he isn’t relevant to you because you are not a designer, nor appreciate his philosophy of design. But meh. I’m sure he is too busy to care.

In this thread I see that a lot of people don't like Mr. Ive. I do agree that the design changes he made in last decade were not popular. Form was above function. All of a sudden it was all about having a thin, port less design. But we can't forget the truth that without him, perhaps, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

« Success is the enemy of curiosity »

Might be innocent but can’t help but think it might be a dig at apple’s management, who probable feels quite comfortable with the success of the existing product lines and prefers to return cash to investors as opposed to investing in the crazy projects he might have wanted to work on. The more successful you are, the more likely you are to want to make sure you want to continue to do what made you successful in the first place.

« I am terrified and disgusted when people are absolutely without curiosity," he says. "It's at the root of so much social dysfunction and conflict.... »

Well said !

Otherwise, I can’t help but think it’s an interesting timing.. again I am sure it’s innocent but not the best timing in light of Evans Hankey’s departure.

I think I am the only one that prefers iPhone 5c over iPhone 5/5s/SE 2016

It felt more solid than its more premium counterpart...

I guess I just want to hear him narrate/be in another Apple video just like before...
Loved my 5C, loved it!

Ive is such an interesting figure and I look forward to reading this. I'm not sure that I have loved everything Ive designed at Apple. The man is genius and he's arguably the next closest thing to a Steve Jobs.

Well my original iPhone is way more scuffed than Jony's. Of course I used it for several years before upgrading but still, his looks like he didn't even carry it around.

I blame him for the disastrous butterfly keyboard (and the long ensuing battle I had with Apple culminating in a small claims court procedure).

I would love to see this dudes house in AD. See what kind of furniture he has.

his furniture is designed by Olaf Lipro, the Swedish industrial designer behind the iconic Dell 8600

And man… that camera doesn’t get old… It’s just perfect, a shame apple couldn’t mass produce it with an A-chip inside.
