while keeping the majority of the Mac and iOS engineering teams separate

Please, for the love of all things, keep them separate and only work on harmonizing iDevices with Mac's with regard to iCloud/syncing. I am growing tired of iOS creeping into my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro's OS. Bertrand Serlet, come back to Apple! We've missed you since 10.6.

If Ive and Federighi had a baby...

This is simple relative to the stupid overboard skeuomorphism they've been doing recently with OS X 10.8 and iOS 6. Except iOS 7's design to be to the updated podcast app's design as iOS 6's design was to the initial podcast app's design.

I'm sure Apple could fix it without having to create yet another icon, and don't encourage them. :p

Yeah, no more icons. Just give us the ability to look up settings in the spotlight search and even change some of them right from the same screen.

Though I think brightness specifically should be added to the multitasking bar on the iPhone/iPod touch. Making it consistent with the iPad.

so apple is basically going to remove features and copy windows 8 ?

Ive is going to kill apple, best thing they could do is kick his ass out and get someone else in to actually, you know, INNOVATE, instead of his wierd fixation on making everything into an unusable pebble.

Jesus. Complain complain complain. Why do you people even buy Apple products? He is incredible, and he's going to do a fantastic job with this. Just like he does with hardware. Faith people!

Because 90% of the people complaining hate Apple and are here just to pick on iFans.

You are not a fanboy!

Where the hell are you getting this information lol? Why would they remove features? This doesnt make any sense at all

Apple consistently removes features. For example, iOS 6 removed YouTube (not to mention Google Maps!). OS X 10.7 removed Rosetta. 10.8 removed RSS. I'm sure that there are other features gone that I'm not aware of too!

Huh? What's so bad about the music app?

its okay on the iPhone but horrible on the iPad. you cant find anything. all i want is my list view on the left back. not those silly album covers everywhere. so many steps to simply find anything in a playlist for example

A simpler, flat design? I can't imagine iOS getting even more simple to use. If anything, I was hoping for more customization. Well, Ive has done good work in the past so maybe this will work out.

There's lots of skeuomorphism and glossy 3D-ish stuff in the current springboard, apps and UI elements that clash against more current clean design concepts.

My take is that Jobs, due to his Pixar animation management experience, wanted stuff that seemed more life-like to typical moviegoer-type consumers, whereas Ives might cater more to the design aesthetics of the art and contemporary architecture communities, where gratuitous (uncanny valley) realism is, for the most art, passé. Maybe these types don't even go to Disney/Pixar movies any more or at all.

I don't think they'll go totally flat like Metro UI flat. I don't think we'll see an overhaul.
I think they'll simply unify the design language towards 'more flat' and away from the realistic (or what some people would say skeumorphic) visual style they've got now on some aspects of iOS.
For example, the Camera Icon, and Settings Icon are 'flat'...the Messages app icon with the candy gloss...isnt. the Music app is 'flat', the Calendar app with the leather stitching, isn't. In iOS 7 I think they'll do away with the candy gloss and the leather stitching and so become more 'flat' and unified.

So, I'm thinking more 'unification' than overhaul. I think that's what the article means when they say the change will be pretty conservative.

define "flatter"

If all they change is the design, definitely no upgrade for me. What's wrong with the current design?

If a "flat design" is like the new iTunes, I'm slightly against it. The buttons look randomly thrown on the background.

This is great news. Regardless of how iOS will look in the end, it looks like Ive is gunning for UI overhaul. Looks like the iphone 6 and the accompanying OS will look totally different from what we see today. That's when I'll go back to the iphone.

Design changes, according to the report, are conservative. In other words: to a minimum. Don't expect big changes — at all.

Hmm. They've cramped as many pixel as the human eye can resolve* into the iPhone. So, the next frontier is 3D?

Proclaiming "flat" sounds like doubling-down on secrecy to me.

*) Yes, those 1080p displays are nice and look gorgeous even when you hold them directly in front of your eyes.
