For *some* of his hardware designs, I say "Good show." (If he had anything to do with all the variations of the iPod Mini, I'd say he flunked out.)

But you will get absolutely no kudos from me for anything he did that was software-related (i.e., iOS7 and God knows what hell he'll introduce to the next Mac OS.

His team must get pissed off when he gets his name in the history books and they toil in obscurity.

This.

His work on the older "Aluminium" devices is fantastic, and the iPhone 4/4s is still my favorite phone looks-wise. The unibody Macbooks rock, and even the Air and retina MBPs are amazing.

The G4 Cube and the "tablelamp" iMac G4 we're the most beautiful computers I'd ever seen, to this day. They are what initially attracted me to the Mac. Then I saw OSX, and it was over.

Fast-forward to today, and I'm closer than ever to leaving the Apple altogether because of his work (although I blame Tim for that).

So, hardware award? Sure. Much deserved.

Software? No. HELL no.

So far, I think his solo work is weak. I really don't think he's any good without Steve Jobs saying "No" to him and steering him in the right direction.

But maybe that's just me.

Award that means nothing in the face of the $$$$ he got from the sales of the products he designed. That shows people really do like the product and not just some "educated" museum "snobs"

Sigh. No, it is an award which is intended to recognise excellence in modern design by a body which exists to record and showcase such matters.

This is nothing to do with 'educated snobs' and everything to do with recognising how excellent modern design can have an influence for good in in the public space, among the general public and in society at large.

In fact, one can measure how advanced and civilised a society is by the attention - and resources - that are given to the excellent design (that fusion of form and function) of everyday items.

Any megalomaniac, commanding resources, money, captured territory and people, artists, can construct large representational structures; it takes a highly developed society to pay equal attention to the mundane, by ensuring that coffee post, cups, roads, computers and phones are given the same attention to detail, and to fusing form and function.

"Ive is our generation's most innovative and influential figure in the field of industrial design--no other design mind has done more to transform the way we visualize and share information," said SFMOMA Director Neal Benezra. "SFMOMA was the first museum on the West Coast to establish a department of architecture and design, and we're thrilled to celebrate Ive's revolutionary achievements."

I guess with the exception of Steve Jobs, without whom Ive may never have had the outlet to express his creative genius?

Excellent post.

Actually, you almost nailed it.

Then again, we should thank Dieter Rams and Hartmut Esslinger for they have clearly set the design language. We should also thank all the designers at Apple that put their ideas into the basket that gets credited to Jony Ive. In other words, there is no real juice in these awards.

Johnny's eyes in that photo appear to be looking at you regardless of the angle...it's like an old picture of Jesus my parents placed in my room when I was growing up.

Edit: I have always wondered if he's got bad teeth, and that's the reason he doesn't smile. Found one picture on Google where he is smiling; they are white, but a little crooked, certainly not enough to keep them hidden. Guess some folks just like to maintain a deadpan facade.

Lol, its so funny how the "Ive threads" on Macrumors have turned into troll-fests after June 2013. Seriously, you guys need to get over it already. The majority of owners are happily using iOS 7. Quit acting like the Aqua-era design language was some sort of visual perfection. There were many issues, unnecessarily heavy visual weight being one of them. Aqua was far less perfected in 2001 than 7 is in 2014, a few interations of refinement will work wonders.

P.S. Jony Ive did not design iOS 7. Leadership and actually designing software are two completely different things. K?

I wonder which color his t shirt will be when he receives the award

Doesn't he get a choice?

(regarding ticket costs)
Haha, very funny. Anyway, congratulations to Johny Ive.

Definitely congrats!

Still, when I read the ticket prices, the first thing I thought of was an election year dinner per-plate ticket costs. Weird.

So? He chose to work for Apple. He chose to let Apple have the profits and to sell himself for less, which in turn drives down labor costs in the field for everyone else. He chose lots of things. (or that's what those who would cop the "he chose" attitude would say...)

I'm trying to decipher the emotion that's on Jony's face in that picture. Confusion? Impatience? Nostalgia? Very puzzling!

why is that camera so ugly. If I could just shave off the corner, move that piece, delete a few lines....

There are hundreds of people who created his work, just everything else in life its the manager who gets all the credit.
