I'm trying to decipher the emotion that's on Jony's face in that picture. Confusion? Impatience? Nostalgia? Very puzzling!

He reminds me of the cover of some rock album where the band is trying to act too cool to smile but they really just look constipated.

If you had said the same thing about Katie Cotton you'd be accused of sexism you know.

This.

His work on the older "Aluminium" devices is fantastic, and the iPhone 4/4s is still my favorite phone looks-wise. The unibody Macbooks rock, and even the Air and retina MBPs are amazing.

The G4 Cube and the "tablelamp" iMac G4 we're the most beautiful computers I'd ever seen, to this day. They are what initially attracted me to the Mac. Then I saw OSX, and it was over.

Fast-forward to today, and I'm closer than ever to leaving the Apple altogether because of his work (although I blame Tim for that).

So, hardware award? Sure. Much deserved.

Software? No. HELL no.

So far, I think his solo work is weak. I really don't think he's any good without Steve Jobs saying "No" to him and steering him in the right direction.

But maybe that's just me.

can't agree more

Can't we get a shot he's smiling in? He can't be this miserable all the time.

It's on par with the expression of Monalisa minus the smile plus the scowl :p

"Ive is our generation's most innovative and influential figure in the field of industrial design--no other design mind has done more to transform the way we visualize and share information," said SFMOMA Director Neal Benezra. "SFMOMA was the first museum on the West Coast to establish a department of architecture and design, and we're thrilled to celebrate Ive's revolutionary achievements."

I guess with the exception of Steve Jobs, without whom Ive may never have had the outlet to express his creative genius?

Jobs had a great working relationship with Ive, but by most accounts he was a sort of editor-in-chief role. He set the general direction of Apple, and often made insightful nips and tucks. He prioritized design and gave them power at Apple.

But make no mistake, Ive is the one with the genius-level knowledge of materials, manufacturing methods, mockups, and doing the tens of iterations that each Apple product experiences before its release.

He is smiling, while also maintaining a "stiff upper lip", it's a British thing. Looking excessively happy or sad, is just undignified :)

It's a photo of Jony drilling holes with his eyes into the aluminum casings at Foxconn.

I have to wonder whether Steve would like what Jony is creating. It's definitely different. I like it in some ways, but in others things need t change.

His team must get pissed off when he gets his name in the history books and they toil in obscurity.

Like this?

Off the top of your head, name them...

I can't...but that's what patent websites are for. :) Still these guys are hardly toiling in obscurity when they get to share the stage with Ive (which we know never would have happened while Steve was alive).

"no other design mind has done more to transform the way we visualize and share information"

Seriously? So every software or UI engineer who poured his heart out on Apple products(Before Ive was appointed as head of UI) got shoved to the dust bin of history.

What a shame!

Get over it already.

Are you familiar with the tale of the emperor's new clothes? The man is stark naked. Everyone needs to tell him this until he actually hears someone. Nothing good comes from allowing him to continue to prance around in the buff like everything's just peachy.

But the vast majority of people like iOS 7.

But that's not what this thread is about. Congrats Jony!

I agree with the general attitude here.

His hardware design (and that of his team of course) was and still is amazing.

However iOS 7 is just not cutting it for me at all. I thought I'd get used to it but at best I see it as mediocre and pretty dull.

It's still really buggy for not much major change and sluggish for something so simple.

I saw some screenshots in iPhoto a few days ago from another time, they were shots of iOS 6 and they made me nostalgic for a quicker and more enjoyable time. I miss it I've got to say.
