I don't recognize this forum anymore. Any topic on AI brings out absolute ugliness and ignorance in the comments.
For anyone truly interested in understanding where AI is going, and where the world will be in 5 years, there are several podcasts that do educated deep dives into the topic. Casual users of ChatGPT are not experts, and that likely includes you! 🤓

I was in a buddy's Tesla yesterday and he brought up Grok on the console. It was mind-blowing how you could just casually chat with Grok (with her sexy voice) while driving. There were some delays as she prepared her responses, but the experience was incredible. A year from now, that's exactly what Siri will be, at least we can hope!

The problem these articles have is somehow expecting that the audience will care about yet another tired “smart device” that quickly and inevitably wears out its welcome after a week or two of goofing around with it, whereupon it sits unused on a shelf or desk, occasionally springing to life when it erroneously thinks it was given a query, only to be told to be quiet and go back to sleep. They will suddenly give this another look because OH MY GOD JONY IVE DESIGNED IT. This changes everything! It’s like an Alexa cylinder, but slightly different because another person designed it! Let me tell you how earth-shatteringly important this difference is. I could not live another day without my incredibly postmodern and neofuturist Jony Ive hex keys. They’re like regular hex keys… but colorful. Take a regular set of hex keys in your mind. Got it? Okay, now throw them out the window and replace them with hex keys that have been electroplated with various FUN colors. Genius! Neutral colors? Go back to the 1800s, grandpa! I would have been perfectly fine with a set of Kobalt hex keys for $15 at Home Depot but daddy says NO. “Wife,” I told my wife, “a real man’s toolbox is not complete without designer hex keys.” So I bought them for $900, as is the fashion of a growing designer tool market, and boy have I never used them.

The beginning of iRobot movie, except they won't be controlled by some benevolent AI with a misguided understanding of how to protect humanity, instead it will be controlled by the likes of Altman and Musk who will lie, cheat, and step on their own mother if it helps them to make money and achieve power/control.
Internet in a way distributed knowledge, information and control across the masses, AI will consolidate it back into the hands of a few.

But when Apple does it, it's "Oh, I cannot wait." (see: folding iPhone)
But the difference here is that Johnny and OpenAI said this device was “ground breaking”, called it “one of the most transformative technology devices the world has ever seen”.

What's more these aren't hard products to design. A speaker? A lamp? Glasses (perhaps but there's all kinds out now). Why is this taking to 2027 or 28? It's 2026 and a yawn now.

They need a story to sell to investors and to whatever other company chooses to acquire OpenAI before it goes bankrupt. Their "smart pin" story failed (Humane, anyone?), and the smart pen rumor doesn't seem to be getting much traction. But the company that buys OpenAI and absorbs its assets will now be able to claim that their updated smart speaker is "Jony Ive-designed" -- which will be marketable as something positive, as long as nobody remembers Ive masterstrokes like butterfly keyboards, hockey-puck mice, and trashcan MacPros.

I’ll try to give you my own perspective in an attempt to explain my apathy towards AI. Not saying I’m right. I’m not proud of my views. Nothing like that.
I wish I were more excited about AI. Most of my friends are software engineers of some type. Among that group, I’m probably the least excited about AI. One friend has repeatedly suggested I listen to The Last Invention podcast that you mention, but I still haven’t. I’ve played around very little with chatGPT. So I’m probably in the group of ignorant folks. I think it was impressive. I see the potential. But I guess I’m more excited about the potential advancements in medicine and research rather than things like a chatbot or image generation.
What Apple has done to summarize emails and texts is of no use to me. I don’t feel that I need help with doing things on my iPhone. I’m retired and don’t have a complicated lifestyle to manage.
Maybe part of my disinterest is that it seems to be everywhere. One of my friends is supposed to use AI 40% of each day. He scoffs at that because he’d never be able to get his work done. My clothes dryer from decades ago had a moisture sensor to automatically turn itself off. Now I have one with AI. The old one worked better. My microwave has AI. I finally tried it to heat frozen vegetables. They were cold.
To be completely transparent, I’d be more excited about Apple’s AI if it were purely Apple. Just my feelings. I’d be more excited if there were not so many data centers required for AI.
So I don’t want to be a wet blanket on anyone’s excitement or optimism. I just wish I saw more to be excited about. 🤷🏻♂️

Haven't you seen Mike Judge's powerful documentary film, Idiocracy ? We're heading for a world where shows like Severance will be shunned as highbrow art, and your "smart" device will be all too happy to feed you content like Ow, My Balls! instead.

I am wholeheartedly with you there, retired too so I am looking for something that "AI" gives me that is useful for me, for my personal use.
chatbots? nah, I can do my own search and look at results.
email, text summaries? nah, don't need it
image generation/manipulation? I'm a hobby photographer and "old school", I don't even like HDR in photos ...
I turned off Apple Intelligence on my 17PM cause it basically showed every email as "important" ...
I grew up way pre-internet, traveled the world before mobile phones were common, what is being hyped nowadays doesn't impress me ...
Until I see something useful, for personal use, that makes my life easier, all I see is the bubble getting bigger and an explosion coming
