This will be a success like that AI button or whatever it was that they cancelled after 6 months…
Stupid idea…

I know this entire forum loves to bag on Ive because the viewpoint is he was singularly responsible for making products thinner, but Apple no longer having LoveFrom help with designs will go down as a terrible decision long term. Ive is a real innovator, and innovation is what Apple is losing year by year.

Also, Apple is now leaning back into thinner devices as a marketing tool. But you know, without the great design that used to accompany them. Lol

Since you use the same picture as years ago, I can also do the same

OpenAI is considering acquiring the AI hardware startup founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, according to a new report from The Information. The deal could be worth at least $500 million.

The venture, known as "io Products," is developing AI-powered devices that could include a "phone" without a screen and other AI-enabled household products, according to people will direct knowledge of the talks. That's despite people close to the project apparently insisting it is "not a phone."

Ive and Altman began their collaboration more than a year ago, focusing on creating voice-enabled AI assistants. The project is still in the early design stages, with no finalized product concepts yet.

The venture is being funded by Ive and Laurene Powell Jobs' Emerson Collective. The startup currently employs a small team that includes former Apple designers Tang Tan and Evans Hankey, who previously worked with Ive on the iPhone.

Instead of a full acquisition, OpenAI and the hardware startup are also discussing partnership options. If acquired, OpenAI would gain not only the technology but also the engineering team that has been developing the device, according to the report's sources.

The deal structure reportedly involves io Products employing engineers to build the device while OpenAI provides AI capabilities and Ive's LoveFrom studio contributes design expertise.

An AI hardware venture would put OpenAI in more direct competition with Apple, despite their existing partnership announced last June where Apple's Siri assistant uses ChatGPT for certain queries.

The AI voice assistant market is becoming increasingly competitive, with OpenAI, Meta, Google, Anthropic, and xAI all developing voice capabilities for their text chatbots. OpenAI launched a voice mode for ChatGPT last year, allowing customers to engage in spoken conversations with the chatbot.

Ive left Apple in 2019, where he served as chief design officer before founding his design firm LoveFrom. He continued to work with Apple as a consultant through LoveFrom until 2022, when the partnership officially concluded.

How much is Johnny boy funding this venture? Pocket change to him so if/when it tanks & goes down in flames? Or actual in ‘balls deep’ funding?

If it’s the latter then it shows he’s got faith, if not then it’s just a fancy design project for him.

Same with trump, if he’s got all his money (legal or not!) into what’s going on maybe he’d start being a bit more careful

It’s obvious that Ives is gone as the hardware hasn’t changed in the last 5 years it’s only been upgraded with better camera , newer chip additional button but no real changes in design

It's sad. He used to do really good designs, the PowerBook G3 was probably the best designed laptop EVER.

But once he started down the thin fetish road, everything got awful.

Jony left because he could see that Tim Cook lacked the vision and courage compared to Steve Jobs. The last 14 years of Apple under Tim Cook has proved him right.
So you think Steve Jobs was wrong about Tim Cook who was handpicked by him and managed to multiply Apple’s worth in those 14 years making it one of the most valuable companies in the world? 🧐

Tim Cook thought Jony Ive's user-unfriendly design of a phone without a headphone jack was an excellent idea, and Apple bragged about it as if it were a feature. Cook also thought that Ive's user-unfriendly design of a phone with no home button and no Touch ID was an excellent idea, that Cook actually raised prices for removing those two things. Therefore, if Ive were still at Apple, Cook probably would be in love with Ive's user-unfriendly design of a phone with no screen, and Cook would raise prices for removing the screen.

I could believe a screen less Apple watch used mainly as a health or exercise device. Could track GPS and most needed functions with voice. Could reduce the costs and more durable.

Ives is searching for the homebar.

You'd think that someone who prides himself on removing "useless" features would have ditched the homebar, but noooooo.

“Exciting” as AI is, do/would people really adopt this into their normal working life? I can’t see this lasting. Seems like a fad to me?

Is Ive on the jiffy juice? Who on earth wants a phone without a screen? Ive must have conceived this for a final pay day,..surely. Don't buy another rabbit!!

I would love to know what peoples definition of a 'phone' is these days.
Is it something that makes phone calls as why is a screen needed to do this if there is an AI running the show. Other functions are not really mentioned and I am not second guessing what this device is - we will see it when it gets announced or more information.
