No problemo:

Basically any picture that you have in iPhoto can be used as a desktop.

* Click on System Preferences
* Click on Desktop & Screensavers in Personal section
* Click on a picture & voila,your done.

For customizing icons, try Liteicon. It does the same thing as Candybar but it's free. Here's a link: http://www.freemacsoft.net/LiteIcon/
