Some are made by others. Just do a Google or Yahoo! image search and restrict the searches to wallpaper or extra-large images.

If you've got Photoshop or Gimp, you can make your own. Really, if you've got artistic talent, the sky's the limit.

actually, he stated earlier that he took these pictures. They weren't 'made' he said he took these pictures. I'm sure there was some post processing, but I was wondering what sort of magic he did when he took the picture.

It looks like a photo of "Sparkler Light Painting", tweaked in Photoshop of course.

(SLP is created with a slow shutter speed on a camera in the dark with light sources flying about, a sparkler is perfect)

But anyways, I'm just guessing...

For the list of names, that's Adium, which is a very nice text-only AIM derivative. It also supports other types of chatting as well.
