Jury Duty... Again

When I first turned 18 many years ago, I got summoned to jury duty.

I served on a murder trial and the only question I was asked by the defense attorney was "Are you still in high school?"

Anyway, we found the guy guilty after about 3 hours of deliberation.

What was the exact date for your first summons? Was it the same exact date?

I ask because most states have laws stating that you can't be summoned for jury duty for a period of one year.

Either way, you could say that you are a student (because you are), or are busy during that period and postpone it. But there are ways out of jury duty.

In Wisconsin it's something like 3 years. I was called in '93 and again in 2006; I was able to get out of the second one due to my caring for an ill relative 24/7 at that time.

About a month after moving to the house I am in now, I received a Jury summons but it was for the old county for which I just moved from. Got out of that with no problem. A few months later, I had to renew my license. Because I just renewed, here came a new jury summons in the county I now lived in. I filled out the back stating that I didn't live in this county any longer and gave them my old addess, That's been 3 years since. 😀

Do you have to be a citizen to be qualified for jury duty or does it not matter? I looked it up for California but it wasn't clear whether you have to have citizenship or not.

I'd love to go to jury duty.

You do have to be a US citizen. It's the same thing in the UK too, need to be british, innit? 🙂

Changing his vote during jury duty so he could get back to his busy law practice has come at a high price for San Francisco solo Francis Fahy and possibly placed him into a category unique unto itself.

A California State Bar Court review panel on Friday upheld disbarment (.pdf) for the 19-year lawyer after finding he violated his oath as a juror and then compounded the problem by lying to the trial court judge when confronted...

I guess we can cross this off as the one way to get out of jury duty as quickly as possible. 😱
