This tells software engineers and designers that their work just isn't worth much.

Nor should it be. I've been a software engineer and designer at big tech companies for the past 30 years, and it's just a job. It pays the bills. If anyone wants to take my stuff and try to improve on it, whether they end up making it better or worse, good luck to them - - the shoulders of giants and all that. Heck, I'll give them as much of a hand as I can without being fired.

So how are we not paying for the lawyers? Do they work pro bono for APPLE? Of course you/we are paying for the lawyers, it's in the price of your device. Just like you "don't pay" for the adds, right? Where do you think the money comes from?

Ads, also they aren't raising the price of your devices so no you are not.

So apple is spending 4.4 billion on R&D last year and Samsung gets fines 120 million for copying......BARGAIN!!!! How exactly is this suppose to be a deterrent ???

LoL .. Pathetic view!

They copied what does not exist!!!!???? Man that Samsung is amazing at copying stuff!!!!

Yes indeed ..... Pathetic view.

----------

Well, the paper the patents were printed on do double as dryer sheets...

Spring Fresh.

Ha ha ha . Current hangover might have something to do with my very wise word choice ..... With an assist from autocorrect :)

$120m does seem low, but then I think the damage to Samsung is already done. More and more people will start to see them for what they really are… cheats. This is probably already happening, considering they failed to mimic the success of the S2 and S3.

pathetic... what a society we are living in!? just copy and steal knowing the punishment is next to nothing !

& this is really going to encourage innovation ... NOT.

just sad.

But they sold more S4's than S2's or S3's. Apple are, guess what? Cheats too!

Have we forgotten Apple's ebook price fixing?

They are cheats. All companies are crooks.

They did not mention anything about the bounce-back patent (381), has it been invalidated? Can Google use it in Android?

You do realize that Samsung already sells connected TVs and smartwatches and Apple doesn't?

Samesung sold smartphones for years before Apple. Still didnt stop them from copying core design and features,

LOL, Apple infringed too so what does that say about them?

Or did you just conveniently miss that part.

Wait... Both Apple and Samsung found guilty of patent infringement, so they are copying each other... So why only Samsung is convicted copycat?

Apple accidentally copied Samsung and Samsung intentionally copied Apple..that's all you need to know

I'm sure that was just another pathetic scheme by Shamesung just like they did with their standards patents

I only like Samsung because they force Apple to innovate, improve hardware & features, and keeps price in check. No matter what you think about Samsung, competition is good for the consumer. And don't tell me you're a shareholder because you own 3 shares of AAPL.

What about Mac OS, Powerbook 100, iPhone, iPod, iPad?....all this was release before Apple vs Samsung competition

Android as a whole is a stolen product. Apple would sue them to kingdom come if Google didn't take necessary steps with every iteration of Android to differentiate themselves.

I'm sure that those things are said only to start flame baits, no rational person can day such nonsense

Its not about the money as Tim Cook said.

Knowing Samsung is convicted copycat again is a win.

This. It's a branding strategy, not an IP one.

Apple doesn't just carefully constructs its own brand, but also has been successful—as the verdict and its implications show the public at large that Samsung is once again found to be a copycat—in branding the competition.

And since Apple will get US$1B, and the entire "branding campaign" will cost US$158k, it's a pretty cheap branding campaign as well.

My problem with Samsung is that in the 90's / early-mid 2000's they we're seenu as a budget and pretty cheap brand, they've ridden on the waves of others (Sony / Sharp) to become a dominant player in TV and Apple in phones, after being burnt with a LED tv that had blown capacitors, I payed £1000 of and they didn't want to know. I'll never touch them again.

You can't polish a turd, and even looking at their tablets and phones now... I can definitely see why people want them, for me, personally; I still see the cheapness in the very blue tinted screens, plastic and poor build qualities.

Still think it's funny some views on here.

From the dawn of time when the 1st Ape like man picked up the 1st animal bone and used it as a tool to hit and break something open, another ape seeing this, perhaps having an idea to sharpen one edge against a rock to make it better, yet another ape seeing this and wrapping an animal skin around the handle to make it easier to hold...........

Humans have been looking at what others do, seeing what works, what does not, and trying it for themselves, coping an idea, a concept, changing it, for better or worse.

And yet NOW.... 2 million years later?

We are supposed to suddenly stop it.

Ohh look one company has made a thin computer with a touch screen. (Only because the tech had been made available from others to assemble such a device) and it's popular with consumers who want to buy it.

From that moment on and for the rest of time, no other human, for generations to come may make a similar device.

Can you imagine what the world would be like now if that mentality had existed in the past?

Sure, I'm not saying make a 100% exact clone that's been deliberately made to fool the buyer, and by that I mean like a fake rolex a fake nike t-shirt. fake BlueRay movies.

Items make and branded to look like the real thing and fool the buyer into thinking they are getting the real thing when they have paid for a copy.

That of course is wrong. I think most would agree if it's done to fool.

But that's never ever happened here. We are talking about similar items and general concepts.

And they even more crazy thing is. From people here who argue strongly in favor of this over control is how much worse their lives and everyone else's lives (other than the giant corporations that would grow to over dominance) you be if this were the case.

The only Samsung product I own is a fridge.

Bet they stole the patents to make that also.

In all fairness Samsung operate all the departments as completely separate companies. the mobile phones still have to buy the same way apple would for example. It keeps each arm profitable. A lot of companies operate like this.

The irony is the TV Arm make really good products and have a lot of innovation... but have little to do with mobile for example. You don't see The TV and white goods department getting sued every day.

It's the opposite of apple where it's a single entity that makes items that link together perfectly.

Apple accidentally copied Samsung and Samsung intentionally copied Apple..that's all you need to know

This has to be one of the most amusing posts ive ever seen on here! I was wondering how someone was going to spin the Apple losing to Samsung part of the article!

Did Apple "accidentally" copy the notification center and control panel from Android as well!

Its not about the money as Tim Cook said.

Knowing Samsung is convicted copycat again is a win.

Apple was found infringing on one Samsung Patent. So at last even an American Jury finds Apple to be a blatant copier.. So now Apple is a convicted copycat as well as a price fixer (ebook case)..
